  • This is how philosophy should be done!

  • The Pythons are essentially mad, without seeming so! This is no ordinary jest: Alone to call Aristotle the “sweeper” of Greek philosophy and “very much the man in form” is far too much and reveals a surplus classical education and knowledge; but sentences like “Hegel is arguing that the reality is merely an a priori adjunct of non-naturalistic ethics, Kant via the categorical imperative is holding that ontologically it exists only in the imagination” are way beyond normal!

  • British humour at its finest!

By the way did anyone else notice that the goalkeeper (Leibniz) is in a different position in the original at 3:21 and in the replay at 3:55?

  • And Confucius say 'Name go in book' lol

  • So will the Greeks face the French in the final?

  • @TanoBrati But Descartes cant take on a team all by himself?

  • @arvin91

He could take Voltaire with him to partner in central defense. Sartre and Camus as central midfielders, Rousseau (though Swiss-born) as the main forward, Diderot as left winger, Montaigne behind the striker, Levi-Straus on right wing. All I have missing are the full backs, the 'keeper, and the coach. Maybe for coaching we could have a special dispensation and put Napoleon ?

  • The coachs of the teams...

    Deutschland: Martin Luther

    Griecheland: Thales Von Milet

  • Where are Parmenides and Zeno??? </3

  • @alifeofreason Parmenides was suspended and Zeno was injured.

  • hegel and kant brilliant.

wittgenstein abused as legionnaire ... to be taken taken off the field for marx...

    morbid :)

  • Haha, Schopenhauer!

  • If you are interested in philosophy, check this site out that I recently stumbled upon. Search "Truth Contest" in Google and click the 1st result, then on the main page, open The Present and read it. Pass it on to your friends.

  • LOL!!! Martin Luther put the douche bag Marx in!!

  • hahahahahaha :)

  • who is the tallest football?

  • Lol "Leibniz doesn't have a chance"

  • of course the greeks would get the no call. they own the roots of western philosophy.

    haha. and they're off!

  • and it WAS offsides!

  • I love how Heraklitus is said to have beaten Hegel who was just standing there!

Also, what did Wittgenstein do to get pulled out of the game?

  • Someone knows the name of the melody intro???

I will appreciate it so much, friends.

  • Funny how Beckenbuaer was in the game!

  • More exciting than actual soccer.

  • Abd DeCarte headbutted someone because he thought it was only a shadow!

  • "Marx is claiming offsides." Sounds like class warfare to me!

  • Socrates famously played for Brazil but was able to play for Greece because of his belief in reincarnation.

  • Nietzsche would probably not want to play with that team

  • oh god this is amazing haha

  • Surely Nietsche on the right wing!? And yes Marx was correct, it was offside.

  • watch?v=MsveK8rT2aU

  • socrates off sides ?

  • Offside!!

  • Archimedes wouldn't have kicked that ball! He didn't want anyone to disturb his circles.

  • well played Archimedes...0-0 and the Germans would've no doubt won on penalties

  • I love how the replay of the goal is different than the goal itself.

  • lol I'm preparing for my final highschool exam and dying while watching this ! :D hilarious :D

  • Just too much! I was in school studying philosophy when I first saw this and I laughed and laughed and laughed some more."the Germans are disputing it..." Funny Stuff!!!

  • Marx was right as usual - it was offside.

  • @fifiragdoll lol 'as usual'

  • I guess competitive sports can be ok

  • Woo! I was rooting for the Greeks :)

  • expose

  • this is the most surreal thing I ever saw

  • I would have to agree with Marx. Offsides!!!

  • lmao eureka!!

  • "beckenbauer obviously a bit of a surprise there..."

  • Karl Marx was right it just ONE thing!

    Socrates was actually offside

PS my favorite joke are the disputes on the goal!!

  • lmfao. amazing.

  • Karl Marx warming up and being brought on by the team manager Martin Luther. Brilliant!

  • amazing lol as soon as arquimedes says eureka all the greeks understand what to do lol : P

germans lost because karl marx only entered in the end! he didnt have time to think properly!!!

  • Yeah, but hell we had beckenbauer ^^

  • beckenbauer is very good.

but kant and nietzsche did nothing!

  • *Archimedes

  • @Thundermonk99

    archimedes in english

    arquimedes in portuguese

    were both right

  • ahh thanks, thats cool.

  • Was this before the days of the 4th official?

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the Greeks score an own goal?

  • no, this happend in the second half, sides had been flipped at this point

  • Ah thanks, didn't think it would be that simple!

  • @izzy160907

    No, it was second half.

  • 'and Karl Marx is claiming it was offside'

    love that

  • The Best Python Sketch ever!

  • pure class!

  • It's also amusing that Beckenbauer, the only one dressed in proper football kit, is looking around thinking, "What the fock is going on?!!!".

Archimedes looked handy with the keepy-ups. Wonder if that was a pro footballer?

  • I thought that was John Cleese as Archimedes.

  • This is funny. GO GREEKS!!!!.

    Hail Satan.

  • haha karl marx warm up , hillarious

  • LOL!

  • "And Confucius say, Name go in book." LMAO!

  • I think I wet my pants at 'EUREKA!'

  • Where's Fichte? :)

  • This is hilarious! ahahahhahaha!

  • The Greeks were fortunate not to go to penalties.

  • This has to be the weirdest sketch I've ever observed.. brilliant stuff.. +5

  • This is sad that I'm 14, and understand the humor in this- but it's really funny :')

  • The video was hilarious.

But why are you giving thumbs down to some 14 year-old kid? We should encourage any young lad who can write a coherent English sentence in today's society. All the time in these comments there are full-grown adults who can't tell the difference between your and you're.

    Give him a break!

  • Well I appreciate your comment (I'm a girl by the way) - although I'm having trouble finding what's wrong with my comment.

Thanks for standing up for me, Sponopt :)

  • "Hagel is arguing that the reality is merely an a priori adjunct of non-naturalistic ethics.

Kant, by the categorical imperative is holding that the ontological exists only in the imagination.

    And Marx is claiming offsides."

    LOL

  • Hegel*

  • That was my favourite joke, too. :)

  • @Sorry2BurstYou LOL!!! Fckin Hilarious!!!!

  • @Sorry2BurstYou Yup, That was definitely my favorite part.

  • @Sorry2BurstYou

    Hagel? No.

Sein Name ist Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel.

Anyway, a priceless football game. Worth for a new match. So many questions are unanswered, and many questions are added till 2011.

  • @Sorry2BurstYou stop ruining the funniest parts of videos with the comments.

  • Continental Team:

    Machiavelli,,Descartes, Spinoza, Sartre......

  • "He accused Confucius of having no free will, and Confucius he say, name go in book."

This video is one of the funniest things in existence.

  • Legends. ;)

  • All we need now is 'Guide for the Perplexed' by Maimonides.

  • Thomas Aquinas and Augustine as linesmen complete with halos - BRILLIANT!!!

  • brilliant indeed

  • SOCRATES WAS OFFSIDE!

  • Where is Phytagoras? I'm sure he could have scored using triangles.

  • pythagoras? He was making sure the team didn't eat any beans.

  • The French should play this, with Descartes as front-center. He thinks he makes a goal, therefore he does!

  • @poojjjjj's first post

    Not bad, not bad.

  • No, no, no, Schopenhauer with his Philosophy of Volition WANTS to make a goal therefore he does.

And Nietzsche with his "Will to Mastery" rules the lawn.

  • Kant didn't enjoy that game because he can't be certain the ball exists as he can only perceive it through sensory perception; it's part of the external world of which we're still un able to be certain.

    Haha Philosophical humour 5!

    (h5)

  • 3:31 This is utterly brilliant, I love it! :D

  • Why did the greeks score in their own goal?

  • they didn't. They were on the left side at first - shooting right. then on the right shooting left. i suppose you have assume that they never moved to the other half

  • Absolutely brilliant!

  • LOL

  • hilarious, brilliant, masterful

  • I am not a big fan of British humor, but this was damn funny.

  • Then watch more, it's the best

  • "EUREKA!"

  • Pure Genius

  • Hegel is arguing that the reality is merely an A priori adjunct of non-naturalistic ethics, Kant via the categorical imperative is holding that ontologically it exists only in the imagination, and Marx claims it was offside.

  • very funny

    jkc.edbd

  • DesOptions is completely right. To even begin to appreciate Python's comedy or any other traditional British comedy, you have to be reasonably intelligent. This kind of skit is why I've always loved Monty Python: highly intellectual but wickedly hilarious.

  • Muskateer.. in order to appreciate this for the wonderful piece of comedy it is you need to be familiar with football ("soccer"), familiar with the great philosophical traditions, and reasonably intelligent. You don't appreciate at it.. 'nuff said.

  • I don't know how crappy Monty Python is, and I can't really formulate my own oppinion. My aesthetic is too limited by my a priori conceptions of space and time for me to reach a conclusion with reference to the object of discussion in itself.

However, I know what I like, and I like this show. Ooogh.

  • hhahahaha

  • Palins jokes were always crap, I guess he came up with the whole ,

" I can see Russia from my kitchen window ".

    Ha ha ha

    This still sucks.

  • Philistine.

  • Horrible? Well it is very silly.

  • Its meant to be stupid and silly thats the whole point also for this particular sketch a knowledge of philosophy does help as you will understand alot of Palins jokes

  • hahah great stuff

  • And Marx is claiming it was offside hahah

  • lol, it's so funny that the 'reply' of the goal is just another take ... 'Leibniz' is on different sides of the net!

  • what in the world does the announcer say about Wittgenstein at 2:55 : "But it's Wittgenstein, Wittgenstein ......?"

  • mgrdead - as far as I can make out it's '...Wittgenstein - who saw his auntie only last week'....

    If I were the Greek (P)FA, I'd lodge a complaint with FIFA - wasn't Wittgenstein Austrian ??

  • it is a rare man who can call

  • that´s so good...

  • lol

  • I can't believe no one else caught the line "...Aristotle very much the man in form."

  • evidently not...

  • Click here for all the wierdest and randomest philisophical questions... answerd!

  • Hydrogen Sulfide my friend..

Try plugging your ass instead of your ears! hehe

  • OFFSIDE!!! ;-)

  • As the light changed from red to green to yellow and back to red again, I sat there thinking about life. Was it nothing more than a bunch of honking and yelling? Sometimes it seemed that way.

  • Cogito ergo sum, but I never think about it...

  • Cogito ergo sum, doesn't mean I think therefore I exist, it means: I think, therefore I am.

You don't need to think to exist, not necessarily.

Most of people nowadays don't really have their I.

  • and marx thought it was offside

  • better than brilliant it was/is one of the best sketches for years. wonder what nietszche's fussballing skills would've been like?

  • brilliant

  • LOLOLOLOLOL

  • Ha ha ha

  • Hegel! Great man.

  • With no kick off, each team should've been on their own side. Poor job Confucious.

  • Hehe! Classical material. Utter brilliance!

  • We expect this but are surprised at that. But the chain of reasons has an end.

    --Wittgenstein, Philosophic Investigations, 326. (Blackwell)

  • "...and Marx is claiming it was offside..."

    best. line. ever.

  • Agree!

  • nein, das hab ich anders gemeint ehem

  • Kick it, Archimedes!

  • ...what people don't understand is that Dionysos offered one of his balls - the one in black and white - just to give them little creatures some entertainment.

So why was it that Socrates scored, not realizing there was Dionysos watching with a whimsical smile, thinking: "Look at 'em little creatures enjoying themselves, cheering for a virtual victory - while being on a fast slide downhill!"

(Anyway, feel free to check out my videos/playlists for some Dionysos material)

  • Beckenbauer is well placed in this match because he had read Confuzius ;). You could have seen this 1990 at the world champion ship in Italy, he went nuts. But I thought Socrates was a brasilian libero? : o

As the referee Kirkegaard would be the right one because of his measured steps IMO. Marx is fantastic here.

  • Marx is just being a little bitch.

  • No, that's what's great. If you watch the tape, you'll see that Marx is right. Socrates *is* off-sides. Marx is the only one who's right, the only philosopher interacting with the actual world. The skit supports Marx's famous thesis on Feuerbach: The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point is to score a goal while not getting off-sides. (Or something close to that.)

  • They did not debate "what is victory?"

  • love it

  • "and Marx has called off sides"

     Brilliant.

  • Wow! Brilliant.

(The Good ol' Days of t.v.)

  • Wow what a treasure it is to have this skit.

  • "Manager of German Team, Martin Luther"

    lol, very true.

  • this is gold

  • LOL omg nicely done...

  • I love the play on materialism or idealism (intentional or not) with regards to Hegel and Kant's comment about the Greek goal vs. Marx's.

  • Yeah, that's what makes me laugh really hard in the end. Then again I'm a philosophy nerd.

  • there are more intelligent comments on this video than the whole rest of youtube

  • hahahaha

  • I concur with RichJ66 as I check my sand

  • I like turtles

  • Hahaha awesome.

  • is this sketch part of a movie? which one?

  • no this is not from a film

  • "oh heres marx lets see if he can put some life into this german attack, *silence*..... evidently not" <3

  • This is pure genius

  • OOOOOH!! the funniest !

  • Amaaaazing :)

  • another good one would be france v. england

  • descartes, rousseau against hume and hobbes? it would be more of a tennis match

  • there are thousands more, man.
