@tungah The compression is what makes it unique because of all the different possibilities it offers with editing and post production. He's one of the best cinematographers out there.
@RielWoodBoards No. Compression causes artifacts, and makes post a living hell, because a considerable part of post is to try to avoid and fix the side-effects of compression. That's why there are things like RED and ALEXA that make raw video.
Compression in and of itself has nothing to do with offering different possibilities, or whatever that's supposed to mean.
I don't object the fact that he is one of the best cinematographers out there. But his bit about compression was nonsense.
@tungah I agree with you a hundred percent. What's more, the Sony F3 looks like film if you use the correct settings. And it looks like film even more than any HDSLR with the new S-log upgrade, because you retain all the highlights and have more information in the dark spots. In fact it has the same latitude as an Arri Alexa.
Good interview... have seen Shane interviewed quite a few times this year... he is very dynamic and passionate about what he does and its GREAT to see someone so successful like him sharing his knowledge with people like us.
Good work guys… thanks for showing us this clip... Cheers
Nice one Tony. Thanks for uploading any more comming? Just bought myself a 60D next to my 7D. Nice flip screen but 7D is still my favorite. :) Laterz.
@pasapasi Im not tony,,, but I can tell you that out of the two, at least for video, is neither... you should go for T3i, I think. It has exactly the same sensor and video mode, not to mention the articulating screen, its the best deal.
@pasapasi Hey dont be discouraged with your t2i. I use a t2i with the april 31 magic lantern build. That way it is literally a 7D. They use the same sensor and what not. only difference is the card they record onto. the T2i with the magic lantern build even allows manual control for audio. so the t2i is pretty much the same as the 7D now.
i really appreciate that hurlbut doesnt pull a punch on what he thinks is good and what he thinks isnt good when it comes to equipment and technique. many other web experts or shall i say personalities tend to dance around criticism of certain gear so they dont step on toes that can affect their money flow. this was a very good interview NWG.
@HiAdrian uhm the 5D and all canon DSLR's shoot in a h.264 compression, ofcourse the compression is what makes it look good or bad. check the diffrence when exporting in .mov h.264 or .mov proress422.
was the audio separately
track?

What was that black tower thingy Shane mentioned that can remove compression? That sounds very promising, if not expensive.

@pasapasi Quality is the same in terms of video, but 7D obviously is more expensive for other reasons.
