1965raj fucking spot on,I bought this album on release and thought they'd go on to do brilliantly, but alas your spot on about the turtlenecks, funny as fuck by the way...
@dkthg I literally mean, a band called "The Sound" =O) They are/were awesome... Some of their popular songs are called "Winning" "Sense Of Purpose" "New Dark Age" man, there's loads of good stuff. Never heard a dud track from them. "New Dark Age" is quite Joy Division-y...
Just to put everybody straight, this song is very reminiscent of The Cure circa. 1980/1981. Nothing wrong with that, and it may be purely coincidental. Fact is, many bands operating in the post-punk period played around with similar ideas and sounds. To claim OMD as "more experimental" than The Cure during this period has no value whatsoever. A large number of bands then were, by default or design, "experimental". After this album, however, OMD experimented more with turtlenecks than music.
@lrrlrr Ummm. . . this sounds like nowhere near The Cure. The Cure were a really great band, don't get me wrong. But this OMD track is just so experimental and amazing, that only someone like them with a sound like that could had pulled it off in the early 80s.
@avalanchealonso Dearest Alonzo, (just a thought, but) I don't think you have spent enough time listening to the cure to hear some similarity in the vocal sound. That was where my comparison was based. Also, it was my opinion. Please respect mine as I respect yours.
@lrrlrr I agree. When i first heard this track coming from my housemates bedroom, i thought it was Pornography era Cure cos of the vocal sound. The vocal melody is actually quite similar to 'Cold' off that LP.
@messthetics Pornography's "Cold" is one of the most amazing and thrilling songs I've ever heard. The same goes for this OMD song, for me it was like moving furnitures by pushing them and making those rubbing noises (from the keyboard)
I remember buying this album when it came out. God!!! I wore the thing out. LOL. I absolutely loved this music. These guys were right at the top of my list, along with New Order, Depeche Mode, Echo and the Bunnymen, U2 and Simple Minds. They sure don't make music like they did back then. PS...........I forgot The Cure.
I don't think it sounds like JD's Ice Age, I always thought it was a rip off of NO's Everything's Gone Green. They both sound extremely similar. Oddly, EGG came out Sept 1981, this song Nov 1981! strange...
OMD's Architecture and Morality, debut album by Flock of Seagulls, and Sons and Fascination by Simple Minds all from 1981 are the landmark albums of that time...sophisticated, epic sound...they were all on the same wavelenght, so to speak
I can definately hear an Eno influence in the guitars and noise effects, great song!

I love NO's EGG... and I love this song. The two are nowhere near being similar... or one ripped off from the other.

i think thee lyrics are "this is my goal, the aim of my life" not "the end of my life" and "the feeling the longing, that everythings gone".
