I am a Falun Gong practitioner. Falun Dafa is a cultivation system in the Buddha School based on the principles of the Universe: 真 Truthfulness 善 Compassion 忍 Forbearance.
Since 1999 it has been brutally persecuted by the CCP in China. People are being killed, tortured, put into concentration camps and have organs harvested from live people, simply because of their belief. More than 3400 Falun Gong practitioners have died at the hands of CCP in the past 12 years.
Quite possibly the greatest novelist ever. His insight into human nature is up there with Shakespeare. Albert Einstein once said: "Dostoevsky has given me more than any scientist..."
Can you understand, how Dostoevsky there was the Russian military engineer explaining for all you some principles of philosophy of Russian soldier about priority of responsibility of man as an intellectual and spiritual creature?!
This underground man is a weird dude. But I must say, I learned from his story and never laughed so hard reading anything - when he went out drinking with the snobby friends. Fyodor at his best. Oh God, and how he whines about his tooth ache!!!
@occupiedusa Ugh. How disgraceful. I did not know that the Tea Party reads Dostoevsky now. Doesn't your book club consists of Atlas Shrugged and such.. This is not the proper forum for you sir. Dostoevsky was ready to face execution for his "liberal" belief. Your rant about universal health care falls on deaf ears.
I recognize, and commend, your choice of book; however...
...the reader needs to practice his reading voice - it's hard to get past how unauthentic it sounds (not at all what I imagine the underground man should sound).
But, either way,...at least the reader has great taste in literature.
Wich of Chekhovs writings you enjoy the most? I actually have several. The Kiss, Oysters. Sleepy. I am also a big fan of all the writers you mentioned. Its cool to see others enjoying some of the best writings out there.

The only gain of civilization for mankind is the greater capacity for variety of sensations--and absolutely nothing more.

Why does everyone call it "Notes From The Underground" when there is clearly no "the" in the title? That's a total pet peeve of mine.

It sounds like Dostoyevsky read the new health care law - in regards to not seeing the doctor :-)

Thanks for posting of course, but the voice, tone, everything of the narrator is all wrong for the piece - robs it of all its necessary sharp tone.

This is one of my favourite books. Does that website have many audiobooks? I like that narrator

Yes it has!
Visit the webpage. There is a wide range of audiobooks from essays to horror fiction, etc.
The quality is also diverse, there are some vrey good readings, but others with too much accent or background noise.
Nonetheless it is free and an execellent resource for learning.

I've always personally identified with Dostoevsky and his character-personas.

To me Dostoyevsky is an excellent writer and psychologist.
I enjoy very much and feel amazed every time he goes inside the mind of their characters.
Nietzsche was right :
"the only psychologist from whom I have something to learn: he belongs to the happiest windfalls of my life"
Im also fond of the other russians writer of the golden age: Tolstoy, Chekhov, Gogol, Pushkin, etc.
