  • This video is popular on Equatorial Guinea

  • wow

  • for those of u who have never been here b4 it's nice to c u again, that's irish

  • Amazing music! Long live Barney and Eamonn

  • Does anyone know the name of the second reel? At 4:10 please?

  • @m0j086

From 4:10 he plays the reel "The Maid Behind The Bar"!

  • @Holm182 Thank you so much! Great stuff, now i'm going to try and get a tab

  • @m0j086

I don't want to sound grumpy, but I really discourage you from looking up a tab for it. Instead I think you should learn it by ear, it's great practice and very often the tabs you found are often more or less incorrect.. What instrument do you play? :-)

  • @Holm182 Fair comment, I'm a competent guitar player of over 10 years and can pick up songs on that by ear with ease, but i've only been playing banjo a matter of weeks and the two instruments are further apart than i thought to be honest. if i learn a tab it'll be the basics, i never follow them to the letter, as they are only another persons interpritation of it i understand that. just a basic picking or chord structure usually, then i learn the rest myself be ear. Cheers for the input though.

  • @m0j086

Sounds great, good luck with your banjo playing!

  • @m0j086 yes this tune is called the boyne hunt

  • Respond to this video... yes the tune is called the boyne hunt.

  • go on the eamon and barney boys, eamon i hear alot about u frm a young woman down in mayo! ;)

  • Nobody plays it like you Barney, nobody does.

  • Yarra, great stuff

  • wonderful ! this is amazing !! wow, love you, the Dubliners !!

  • for those of u who have never been here before, it's nice to see u again

  • haha epicly. the way he looked right after he finished was like: i'm done.

  • anyone know where i can find the notes for the first tune ''back in the old house'' ?

  • @MrSean638 I just grabbed my banjo and started playing it by ear. It's not that hard. At 3:39 the camera even zooms in at the banjo, and he actually plays the greatest part of the tune. Rest is pretty easy to figure out by ear.

If you mean for guitar, I recommend searching google.

  • @Tenz0r thanks very much!

  • Wer kann das überbieten? first class!

  • wat een geweldig betrokken uitvoering, werkelijk met hart en ziel, hel betrokken gespeeld!! Barney, ik hou van je!!

  • the old house is a pub on merrion row called paddy o donoghues where they started playing

  • from 8.15 on it just gets unreal

  • @seanogcarey What do you mean with 'unreal'? Better to say unbelievable

  • @EirikGunnarson ah ye ya just cant help but move your feet to it

  • @EirikGunnarson nothing wrong with the description unreal..... quite common

  • @zweisteineins sorry mate....reply to the wrong guy

  • oh wow I luv it! fanstastic, great banjo pickin!

  • waa haaa haaa

  • Barney is a small god. I want to play like him but it's just beyond me.

  • @rayggallagher1974 It is'nt, he started somewhere as well, with the same fears.. You Can. Keep playing, keep the faith!!!!!!!!!!

  • I miss my ol dad. He played tenor banjo.

  • BANJOPOWER! Barney rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Nearly 60 years listening to these great entertainers and they are still the best. Barney still gets me up and dancing in spite of all the arthritic aches and pains.

  • @Petroskeyful1 Nothing like them today - unique musicians and beautiful music. I think the music Barney is playing is called "The Old House which was originally sung by the late great Tenor John McCormack.

  • @cadbury6443 Yes, you are quite correct it is the "Old House". What a wonderful selection and performance.

  • @Petroskeyful1 Thanks for confirming my opinion.

  • for those of u who are here for the first time, it's nice to see u again, now that's irish

  • either that one person couldnt listen fast enough, or he has no sence of good music

  • @Irishyoshi1 3 arseholes now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this puts alot of music thats out now to shame. my friend....... your a man after my own heart!!!!

  • These guys get so much pussy back stage.

  • 1 person has a

    VERY small penis

  • @TheStonedSlackerNZ she sure does :)

  • Comment removed

  • barney said VERY CLEARLY if i start to talk to fast listen to me quicker.

  • Where in the almighty world could you garner enough interest in an aging banjo player on a Saturday night when you could be watching a marvelous James Bond movie or Starwars or hot young lassie singer..

I suspect In West Virginia Or Ireland.

  • @bawstonboy

But you must agree, he's the best danged aging banjo player in either of those places.

  • @mashmusic11235 Damn right! :-)

  • Saw the Dubliners at Salford Lowry 3 days ago...although looking older & less firm, Barney was on top form as usual. Long may he keep it up.

  • This is from the Dubliners' 40 year anniversary concert, recorded at the Gaiety Theatre. What a performance, wish I had been there..

  • May the best of his past, be the worst of his future

  • @jukenna Thank you!

  • Where was this recorded??

  • barney = god

  • If I'm talking too fast - you'll have to listen quicker!!!

  • My smile grew wider for every second of this

  • im just going to assume the person that clicked the dislike button did so by mistake

  • Makes me so homesick!1

  • Brilliant!!

  • I could only dream of playing as good as this....... a TRUE Genius.

  • IF U DIDN'T ENJOY THAT THEN U MUST BE DEAD

  • watch and learn like i always say

  • What's the name of the second tune?

  • Comment removed

  • Pure unadultriated talent. This Genius was obviuosly kissed by Angels at birth !

  • a very talented man!

    ** HELP!**

does anybody know where i might get the tenor banjo/mandolin tab for the first tune 'the old house'? ive hunted high and low, but cany find it anywhere.

    thanks.

  • There should be a national Barney McKenna Day!

    An absolute LEGEND!!!!

  • @roybuckleytv no, an international Barney McKenna Day with parades of banjo players and a throne for the master himself!

  • Barney is a God.......

  • wow, very good.

  • Nice to see an old friend here! I met him often when came to the "Continent"

  • barney's a real genius & brilliant... so sorry that music in these days are a total crap... missed the old days...

  • When I die I'll be proud to say I've seen Barney on the banjo in person, Ronnie singing, Bono being a tosser as always, and number 5 Paul McGrath being the most Irish man who wasn't a member of the Dubliners. Rip Luke, Ronnie and Ciaran, your bodies have left us, your spirits and songs never will.

  • A five string is tuned higher than the tenor (4 string) banjo, but you could tune it as a tenor and leave the 5th string alone and get a similar sound unless the tuning creates a buzz on the frets since there would be less tension on the strings, creating a wider arc of vibration. IMHO, is you want to play tenor, buy a tenor.

  • Love this man.

  • Stunning stuff! Brilliant man.

  • a bit good though eh!

  • Getting a 5 string.. Would that really matter, anybody that knows it?

  • @Gaz10t yeah it tuned completely different, for string short scale tenor is what i have its awesome

  • Comment removed

  • del the dub some dub you are its eamonn cambell backing barney you fool

  • @fruitbowler Hell im in america and I know this. Anyone with irish roots should!

  • John Sheehan struggling to keep up with Barney, who looks like he's only getting started

  • @delthedub John Sheahan isnt even there, but yeah, Eamonn seems to have a bit of trouble keeping up with Barney.

  • It's so lovely, but the Bass is so absent!

  • @Qwerti60 This is irish traditional music. There is no bass in that. Nor should there be, it would be very hard to play any sort of bass to that that wouldn't mess up the delicate phrasing and swing.

  • The guitar makes me feel that I need to hear the double-bass or any othe bass in this melody.

  • would that be a paramount he is playing ?????

  • Could someone please tell me the name or title of the first slow piece-my da sings it all the time-Le do huil!!??

  • @samarian100 - If I understood him correctly, he said in the clip (just before lowing the mic) that the first piece was called "Back in the Old House".

  • @samarian100 called "the old house"

  • @samarian100 The name of the first one is "The Maid Behind the Bar."

  • To me Barney is Thé Eric Clapton amongst the banjo-players, I don't think it can get better than this!!!

  • @ejlaparram Hell no. Clapton is known as "Slowhand", and Barney is anything but slow. No offence to Eric, he's a great guitar player, but comparing the two is way off.

  • Despite his age and even after illness, Barney is the best!

  • as we were told in bielefeld down in november ´06 he´s the best banjo player amongst the dubliners, but i think he´s the best of all

  • does he use a plectrum do pick fast like that, or is it all fingerpicking?

  • @TonyMcWatt All plectrum

  • @TonyMcWatt he uses a plectrum.class job

  • There's only one Barney Mckenna and only one Eamon campbell. A great Drogheda man!!

  • amazing... xx

  • amazing... xx

  • ive never seen a man so concentrated playing an instrument

  • @pyropickles hes old leave him alone......

  • @pyropickles He needs to concentrate ha ha

  • PaintedbirdIII, thank's for posting this fireworks, LOVE IT!!!

  • There might be many irish tenor banjo players but there is only one Barney Mckenna.

  • this tune is like pringles to me once you start listening you cant stop :)

  • FIREWORKS!!!

  • Eamons guitar compliments this song very well too.

  • AYE Shit that was kickass!!! Play it nice and loud!

  • I love that guy und his banjo. great musician!

  • Whát a great solo, with the two of you!!!!!!!!

  • Absolutely agree with you... What an unbeliavable banjo player... He seems so quiet when he plays. He is now 71 years old and to seem him play like this...Wow... Respect for you man. And long life for you

  • Tho GREAT guy's rocking the house, jong mucicians eat your hart out!

  • Barney, best specialist on banjo/ humor ever, if you ask me!!! Love the guy, thanks Barney and the Dubliners for years of great music and the joy you bring to the people!!!!

  • depends what kinda bajo u want u want a 5 string or u want the tenor that this guys playin....if uve ever played violin then the tenor will be a little failiar if u finger pick with a guitar the transition from guitar to 5 string banjos pretty easy..

  • OK! Barney for President.....in France

  • @zouzousable Barney McKenna for president of the United States!

  • and the best architect is William Morris (1834-1896) -Arts and Crafts - See "the age of Ersatz", its high-test!!! greeting

  • blooody fucking brilliant!

  • awesome!

  • Saw this about 2 years ago, or well, a similar version, it was awesome!

Pretty sad he's pretty much blind now though :(, they had to guide barney to the side of the stage after the song with a giant flashlight

  • I Love the Dubliners

    And I Love Barney

    Hey is absolutely great

    Barney for President ;)

  • i seen these guys playing at vicar street the other day , barney played this song he owned it! hes a legend he even shook my hand :)

  • Hi guys im thinking of getting a banjo but im not sure it is worth the money!!

And is it a hard insrument to play???

  • Hearing McKenna, you know it's worth it! If you get one though, make sure you know what kind of banjo you're getting. McKenna's playing the tenor banjo.

  • mcbrides do a few beginners banjoes that are good value for what they are. your looking for a tenor banjo, dont spend more than 3-400 for your first one.

  • Dollars or Pounds?

  • euro... irish currency

  • haha legend

  • God save Barney McKenna and his golden Hands

  • ya haaa! no need to tell my story....love u!
