@Salivable Picking up an instrument really helps. Before I picked up a flute I was tone deaf but hearing the notes in tune will improve your voice and will also help you realize when you are off.
Both of those examples are awful. Can we stop with the diaphragm myth? Or do you actually believe that? If so you need lessons from a reputable teacher yourself.
wow that is so true because untill recently nobody has ever head me sing because i was too embarrased and that lack of confidence kind of strayed me away from singing so i didnt practice every day..... and it definitely showed in my voice (: but now i sing at church because its what i love and i dont want anything t stand in my way of what i love to do
The video is not audible properly....can you please improve the quality of sound for this video so that we can understand better what the singing teacher is trying to coach. Thanks, Manish Orkey
@snake48710 Well I see your point. But for beginners like me, I need the basic skills and foundations before I create anything of my own.
And even if this video is opinionated, this guy sings better than most of us and he's an expert, so it's reasonable for me to try the exercises. Now the question again is..do you know how to support the diaphragm? :P
@heymanhaha not at all lol i get your point too and i hope you (and all of the peopel whaching this vid) succseed your musical ambitions anyway my freind is trying to convince me to join a band of hers ....but idk if i should people tell me i sing good but i dont think i do oh well if i do join it will be playing an intrument lol

@Salivable get singing success by brett manning, its a pretty good program, and take your time. if you can get the book on bel canto by mathilde marchesi. remember learn to sing on Ah. vocalise scales on ah. get rid of a high larynx, let the tongue be relaxed and the jaw drop, start a note on the tail end of the in breath. there are many things that go into a good sound, some people have found them or do some of them naturally, other people just need to learn them, GOOD LUCK XD
@Salivable well you could start figureing out wat you need to work on most like high notes i need to work on loud notes mostly just figre that out first and then work your way from there it wont come instatly it takes time for your voice to develope but dont worry if you keep trying youl get there
@Salivable i guess u can pay for a vocal teacher....and i no how it is annoying when ppl say that, because if u r like me- u checked every how-to website and they always said that u had to pay for a coach, but i only had one lesson and my voice is better is much better.......
@Salivable Practice makes perfect. You could start by learning some piano. That really helps develop/improve your singing voice. Or here on YouTube there are vocal warm-ups or exercise's you could do. That helps too. That's what I did. I use to sound really bad. I was tone-deaf but I kept on practicing. I've been getting better. Now that I play the piano, my voice sounds great!
If you don't have a singing voice what so ever, is there a possible way to create one by using vocal coachings? I dont know if you can take a bad voice and make it a good one?
Thats not true at all...you just have to find out what your range is. Your not gonna end up sining things that are in the range of your fav people. But If you practice and stick to your own style. Youll learn over time.
Take a deep breath and as you let your sound out, you squeeze/contract your stomach muscles/diaphram, sort of like, as if you were trying to push the top muscles of your stomach/torso down towards the bottom muscles. The harder the contraction, the louder sound you will get. Hope not too confusing? I'm just an amateur anyway.
I started doing a few vocal exercises while i am playing the drums, great part is no one care hear me over the drums lol, like when i am count mt beats, i try to sing it 1, 2 ,3 ,4 instead of so so me fa doe, and sometimes I yell HEEEEEEEEEY!
I think he's very right about how people are just afraid someone will hear them...I personally am a closet singer....I lock myself inside and scream my balls out while practicing...really helps

@ys2468 It's hard to hit the highs when you sing from the diaphragm. I learned by emulating Rod Stewert's Maggie May. All of a sudden I felt I was no longer using my throat voice but an area in my upper chest. At first it's a weak voice but after a couple of weeks of singing like this my voice got stronger and clearer. I never pushed too hard. Just had fun singing Maggie May and now I sing like all those guys on American Idol! Chris Cornell, Eddie Vetter, etc
@EmilyLandherr I agree. I hardly sing great when my mom and dad are around. I get so tensed and nervous they would tell me, " Ata nang dai ka mag kanta na dai mo kaya!"( Translation: I said don't sing when you can't sing!)
Here is the answer everyone, learning how to sing better basically means learning how to relax and breathe better. There's no big secret, you don't have to spend a lot of money for any vocal training. Be your own coach. The only person standing in our way is us.
I can teach you how to improve when you really could have done it yourself all along.
he's doing this correctly but it's not showing beginners the correct picture. singing loud but not knowing how to do so correctly can really harm our voice. instead of saying LOUD, let's say that we need to breathe out more, or exhale more, or let more air go or flow out more freely.. this is what you should keep in mind. if you let go, your voice will naturally increase in volume on its own
maybe you're right about the comfort issue. I never had that problem I thought, but now I realize all I'm really comfortable with is singing parody. If the people aren't laughing then I'm dying. Not for long I hope...
I have no idea why they gave you thumbs down. I'm tryin' to sing Paramore's and Demi's songs, and it's kinda hard, because Demi and Hayley Williams can sing pretty high. Just try to sing it, but don't make you sound like someone that you weren't. And don't destroy your voice.
the thing is you sing louder then you think. i always thought my voice was low but then i recorded myself and i only heard me singing in my head not on the outside
i need help with sounding good.., i like to sing to dokken but everytime my parents here me, they say i suck lol...if anyone can help me, plz reply, thank you
obviously this person is a professional music theory teacher....not a professional VOICE teacher.
singing is more that breath support. you don't want to be supporting a sound that isn't being produced correctly with a high soft palate and resonance.
and you NEVER need to change your facial expression to sing higher
I highly disagree on this video. If you are approaching the upper register of your voice, and are having difficulty with it, pushing out volume could possibly be very harmful.
i'm 13 and i have a low voice i'm not much of a talker but i have a hard time on high notes is that normal or what that's the only thing and also i sing a little low not to low but yeah....any help would be appreciated[=
you have plenty of time! if you're having a hard time on high notes, that MAY just mean you're not a soprano. and there is absolutely nothing wrong with being a Mezzo or even a Contralto! Just give your voice time to mature before you give up on it and don't take advice from free voice lesson videos!
Definitely not too late!! I was in chorus for over 4 years (elementary, HS, college), but until I took personal voice lessons in college did I really learn how to use breathing correctly, the psychological aspect of it, vibrato (deals with breathing), pitch, etc. etc... (to be continued...)
(continued..) If you are 16 you are still developing and you actually hit your 'peak' singing age in your 30-40's (don't quote me on that, I forget the real #)? Even then after you can still sing. Unless you are tone-deaf everyone can sing. It is a matter of learning how to. It's really just a learned skill, unless you are a natural, BUT, even naturals practice practice practice!! Have fun with it and don't worry if you don't sing like a pop star, everyone's voice is different! :)
Oh, and another thing, for anyone who 'squints' as they sing (especially high notes), Do Not do that! What do I mean? Look at some singers, when they sing a high note their eyes squint and their eyebrows get that angry look. You have nasal passages that all connect in the back of your face and you sort of shut off that pure sound when you squint, losing your pitch. Instead try to keep your eyebrows up like a surprised look for those higher pitches. Just try not look like you had a face lift!
would you understand me when i say that i can't sing but i have an ok voice if i took lessons?? b/c i know ppl that cant sing AT ALL! but i think with a few lesson i will be ok...sorta like cassie just with a bit of a stronger voice
sure i mean you probably wont be an amazing singer but if you have a little bit of potential all you have to do is to learn how to let out that potential correctly.=] then you might be an ok singer.
He's totally right. I remember I used to so SO well because I thought no one could hear me when I sang in the house alone. But then a few couple guys heard me a year or two later, and made fun of me. Then the next thing you know I'm losing my voice, I want to sing but I try to sing soft, I just don't have that pretty voice anymore. ;(
hey don't give up singing. its a great way to express yourself. i used to be a very soft singer partly because of i was afraid someone would hear me and make fun of me. but i started singing when no one was around and i was really good. I missed out on a lot of things in music because i was afraid of what someone might think of me. but this past year i tried out for chorus at school and made it. so never give up on what you love no matter what.=]
The diaphragm is a muscle. Just like how a person wants to be fit, it'll take a while to strengthen something like the diaphragm, especially that it controls your breathing, an involuntary activity. That is why it takes a while to truly master and control your diaphragm, but all you need is practice.
I'm working on my singing so that I could maybe eventually do vocals/guitar in a band. I have little problems, and this did help me out, but theres one thing that none of these videos dont help me with. I want to kno if theres any way to intentionally make your voice crack to do screaming allmost. I want to be able to do the Dave Grohl type of cracking when he does the screaming type thing
he's really right about how people are afraid that someone will hear them.
I use to be soooo freaked out that someone might hear me, because I didn't think I sang good enough. but now, I couldn't care less if someone heard me. :P and now I'm actually able to hit notes I wasn't able to hit before. :)
I've watched this video for a second time now and I now see the faults. No matter what he tries to demonstrate, whether it be his version of poor technique or his version of the right way, he sounds like he is really straining. And singing high is NOT the same as singing loud. But he was right about people being afraid of people hearing them when they sing.
You should not sing loud!! You should sing from the diaphragm and project, but the example was terrible...thats belting and it only causes your vocal chords to rub up against eachother and become irritated. The only difference between the 1st and 2nd example scales were that for the 2nd one-you raised your soft pallet. That's all you did.
this is terrible and i hope you dont teach this to real paying students.....
i hate singing if i have to sing all i do is talk to someone next to me. i think my singing ability sucks. i cant sing all i can do i like talk i cant sing.

Here is the answer everyone, learning how to sing better basically means learning how to relax and breathe better. There's no big secret, you don't have to spend a lot of money for any vocal training. Be your own coach. The only person standing in our way is us.
I can teach you how to improve when you really could have done it yourself all along.

when he was doing the ahh ahhh the camera was shaking o-o
x3Minjix3 2 years ago 2
he's doing this correctly but it's not showing beginners the correct picture. singing loud but not knowing how to do so correctly can really harm our voice. instead of saying LOUD, let's say that we need to breathe out more, or exhale more, or let more air go or flow out more freely.. this is what you should keep in mind. if you let go, your voice will naturally increase in volume on its own

maybe you're right about the comfort issue.

SabiParker 2 years ago
the thing is you sing louder then you think. i always thought my voice was low but then i recorded myself and i only heard me singing in my head not on the outside

im 11 and a very good singer and facial expressions does work coz it is very hard to sing with a plain face you know
oh i use to go to singing lessons
steffychill 2 years ago
obviously this person is a professional music theory teacher....not a professional VOICE teacher.
singing is more that breath support. you don't want to be supporting a sound that isn't being produced correctly with a high soft palate and resonance.
and you NEVER need to change your facial expression to sing higher

wtf?!?!?
lovablegal14 2 years ago
I highly disagree on this video. If you are approaching the upper register of your voice, and are having difficulty with it, pushing out volume could possibly be very harmful.

I am 18...is it too late for me?
drawingangel2 2 years ago
definitely not, your voice doesn't stop developing until you're in your thirties so you've got plenty of time left :)

i'm 13 and i have a low voice i'm not much of a talker but i have a hard time on high notes is that normal or what that's the only thing and also i sing a little low not to low but yeah....any help would be appreciated[=
JonasbrothersRhot90 2 years ago
you have plenty of time! if you're having a hard time on high notes, that MAY just mean you're not a soprano. and there is absolutely nothing wrong with being a Mezzo or even a Contralto! Just give your voice time to mature before you give up on it and don't take advice from free voice lesson videos!

Is it too late to learn to sing (better) if you're 16?
Well, considering most artists are already great singers at that age...
RuniteFish 2 years ago
it's never to late to learn how to sing :) so far as I know then..=P
trungtin135 2 years ago
It is not too late to learn. Who cares what other people can do at that age. Don't let things like that discourage you.
dkrumrie123 2 years ago 2
Definitely not too late!! I was in chorus for over 4 years (elementary, HS, college), but until I took personal voice lessons in college did I really learn how to use breathing correctly, the psychological aspect of it, vibrato (deals with breathing), pitch, etc. etc... (to be continued...)
starveil101 2 years ago
(continued..) If you are 16 you are still developing and you actually hit your 'peak' singing age in your 30-40's (don't quote me on that, I forget the real #)? Even then after you can still sing. Unless you are tone-deaf everyone can sing. It is a matter of learning how to. It's really just a learned skill, unless you are a natural, BUT, even naturals practice practice practice!! Have fun with it and don't worry if you don't sing like a pop star, everyone's voice is different! :)
starveil101 2 years ago
Oh, and another thing, for anyone who 'squints' as they sing (especially high notes), Do Not do that! What do I mean? Look at some singers, when they sing a high note their eyes squint and their eyebrows get that angry look. You have nasal passages that all connect in the back of your face and you sort of shut off that pure sound when you squint, losing your pitch. Instead try to keep your eyebrows up like a surprised look for those higher pitches. Just try not look like you had a face lift!
starveil101 2 years ago
when they sing a high note their eyes squint and their eyebrows get that angry look. >>> lmao that's me :3

would you understand me when i say that i can't sing but i have an ok voice if i took lessons?? b/c i know ppl that cant sing AT ALL! but i think with a few lesson i will be ok...sorta like cassie just with a bit of a stronger voice
IcedLipGloss 2 years ago
sure i mean you probably wont be an amazing singer but if you have a little bit of potential all you have to do is to learn how to let out that potential correctly.=] then you might be an ok singer.
simplydorkcr13 2 years ago
He's totally right. I remember I used to so SO well because I thought no one could hear me when I sang in the house alone. But then a few couple guys heard me a year or two later, and made fun of me. Then the next thing you know I'm losing my voice, I want to sing but I try to sing soft, I just don't have that pretty voice anymore. ;(
JacquelineLovesAndy 2 years ago
hey don't give up singing. its a great way to express yourself. i used to be a very soft singer partly because of i was afraid someone would hear me and make fun of me. but i started singing when no one was around and i was really good. I missed out on a lot of things in music because i was afraid of what someone might think of me. but this past year i tried out for chorus at school and made it. so never give up on what you love no matter what.=]
simplydorkcr13 2 years ago 4
Perhaps all u need to do is to heal your vocal cords... you can do so with some exercises, and a visit to a speech pathologist.

how do I use a diaphragm O.o
Shakeitupyes 2 years ago

Flcracker94 2 years ago
I'm Learning to scream and sing imma eventually join a band. Ive got High pitched screams down Just check my favorites on how to Scream if you want.

he's really right about how people are afraid that someone will hear them.
I use to be soooo freaked out that someone might hear me, because I didn't think I sang good enough. but now, I couldn't care less if someone heard me. :P and now I'm actually able to hit notes I wasn't able to hit before. :)

OMG that soo helppppeed.wen i go high its not like "raspy" u know thats dryy kinda sound!!
modelCHICKdancer 3 years ago
I've watched this video for a second time now and I now see the faults. No matter what he tries to demonstrate, whether it be his version of poor technique or his version of the right way, he sounds like he is really straining. And singing high is NOT the same as singing loud. But he was right about people being afraid of people hearing them when they sing.
Bulbie7 3 years ago
THIS IS TERRIBLE ADVICE, IM SRY!
