I played double bass in a performance of this with a local orchestra and a british conductor. He has NO IDEA what rex tremendae maiestasis meant: he had the dotted rhythm done light and bouncy like opera buffa. i was OUTRAGED!!!!!!!!!!!!!
because i firmly believe in the King of Tremendous Majesty
here is a conductor who knows the meaning of the words
Everyone has an opinion about conductors. This one is another clown. No wonder he needed so many rehearsals -- no manual technique, and rampant logorrhea!
imi pare asa rau ca acum modelele pt maj tinerilor din ro este Becali, Guta.. etc... romania ca mentalitate este manelista acum.. vb de majoritate... mai sunt exceptii, dar prea putine ca sa mai faca diferenta
This is filmed on rehearsal...are you aware that the conductor has to listen to 100 people singing right besides the orchestra playing? How can he do it when playing "Allegro" Legiero?

What horror of a musicain, ignorance in a highest form, he knew nothing about the 18th century and stood up in front of the orchestra. But it's happening till nowdays unfortunately, he has followers ignorants. Sick.
@pppettt Agree absolutely. He is getting slower and slower and then screams at the orchestra: "You are dragging along !!". Impertinent. Can't listen to that !
@globaleverbloedung no conductor is exempt from the truth that he is not in total control of every single aspect of music making, nor is it possible. Szell, Bohm, all those conductors who had huge assertive egos couldn't let that get in the way. They scream, sometimes seem unreasonable and irrational. But in the end they are right.
@globaleverbloedung The orchestra was dragging along, they were playing slower than the beat. A thousand reasons could explain that- but the sole relevant truth is they were dragging along. so he fixed it.
@jin12345678 The only one who is dragging like hell is he himself ! There are surely different possibilities of Tempo in this piece, but THAT is slow motion, just boaring and not at all representing a "REX" !
@legislator06 thanks for the reply. yes I agree, his tempo is slow, typical of celibidache. However I believe in this clip he says "dragging" because the strings were behind the pulse- they were getting slower and slower. they were doing an inadvertent rallentando. just to clarify
@jin12345678 The strings get slower because in this bar the dynamic changes to piano and usually (when you come from a "normal" tempo") the tempo reduces in this bar a little bit to prepare the "salva me" from the choir.
sì... langsam... but not langsam like Boehm, Karajan... no tension here... it's like he had a Prozac. And after wieving the video again... no no, nothing good. And he was superbe in his appareance of humility. Better sincere "dictators" than Celibidache.
quando una risposta è solo un insulto da ignorante e incivile, questo conferma le mie buone ragioni. Anche quel babbo di Celibidache ti direbbe che hai sbagliato. A insult from you it's a honour.
This is a rehearsal of the highest order. Celibidache is a true Maestro. Follow the genius of his comments. He always gives positive reinforcement followed by clear direction. Appreciate the humor and observation used to elicit pure musicianship from the ensemble. One of the greatest of all time.
Obviously you are only invited to comment here, when you are a fanatic fan of Mr. C. Critical comments are deleted. This is the same arrogance, with which celibidache insulted all his life long other conductors, composers, orchestras.
Savemozart, I tried to see your profile youtube, but it says "this account is deleted". What does this means?
Second question: you said that "critical comments are deleted". I answer: Yes! Critical comments like "this is a slo-mo masturbation of Celibidache" should be deleted, don't you agree? Otherwhise, I'm convinced I tried to stimulate a usefull dialog for both fans or not of Celibidache.
It is very paradox that some people says that Furtwangler and Celibidache treated musicians badly when it was the opposite. Why dont they mention the treatment that Toscanini would give orchestras, you can see the fear on their faces, and the abstract tempo that smash sound to a plastic object instead of creating the three kinds of lives a sound have, and only musicians with SOUND school understand.
For someone with a concentration capacity of an amiba ou better still a goldfish, all music that is not histerically loud and quick, or "polifonically" imperceptible is a step away from instant death in the Playstation-like world of the listener-cosumer! As with general attitudes towards culture, the benefit of the doubt over the reasons why music under Celi is not perspiration but experience never really fall well with people who value opinions more than silence!
I'm very surprised by the expressive nature of his rehearsal communication with the choir... somehow different that with the MPO where he seems not so constructive - that is natural because they were at a different level of demand... I understand his impact on those who worked with him, his message is not only content but also a communication skill of drive and co-inspiration... and mind you he does not seem to have been so agreeable in his professional relations as that! He is a natural leader!
@permea I believe this is actually in London. Furtwangler and the Berlin Philharmonic were there as some sort of good will trip following the war. That's my understanding, anyway.
thank you for your reply,i've downloaded the documentary from emule and you're welcome whith the subscription,i'm always interested in "quality material";thanks again for the reply

Anyway, part two and three will come very soon. Thks for subscribing!

"It's not the conductor" he said. I was a bass player in a symphony orchestra for over twenty years.
did i EVER hear another conductor say this? in over 20 years?
