The raw simplicity of this tune is in a completely different category than Tom Petty's. Tom's rendition turned it into a rock anthem that we all know and love... johnny's version is the raw folk tune that wouldn't have made it on the radio... as do most of the Cohen originals... not radio material . But this version is just as good

I love both Cash and Petty and prefer the original, but this cover is yet another testament to the brilliance in Cash, he covered many great songs (Hurt, Southern Accents, Wichita Lineman to name a couple) and he put everything he had emotionally, spiritually and creatively into each cover, while having the respect not to rip off the original artists and the skill to not ruin the songs. johnny cash and Leonard Cohen are similar in their ability to write amazing songs but for some of those songs the best version comes out in the form of a cover.
The raw simplicity of this tune is in a completely different category than Tom Petty's. Tom's rendition turned it into a rock anthem that we all know and love... johnny's version is the raw folk tune that wouldn't have made it on the radio... as do most of the Cohen originals... not radio material . But this version is just as good
