Yes, better than a pro in fact. Thanks to its SSD drive the air will load videos faster without the beach ball effect as found in HDD-based systems. However it won't render the video as fast as a modern pro.
The new macbook air has an i5/i7 processor so that will definitely help its cause compared to the air I showed in the video. (get a 13" version though)
@dinnerandashow My laptop has a slower processor than what is in the MacBook Pro and it still runs Premiere Pro CS5.5 beautifully, even with 1080p footage. I'm pretty sure that the Air can handle it.
@dinnerandashow Of course, if you're used to editing on such a high end system, then it'll be too slow for you. I'm sure you're doing more professional work than someone who uses a MacBook Air as their primary system would be doing. That doesn't mean that it won't work. To each their own, however.
@dinnerandashow The GPU IS supported for acceleration. Otherwise, how would you be able to watch 1080p YouTube videos without much CPU usage? The Air is not a netbook, at least in terms of specs. Please, stop spreading useless FUD on the internet.
@dinnerandashow You don't have to have GPGPU acceleration to edit 1080p video. You do if you're trying to composit and do motion graphics in 1080p. Exporting might be slow, but that doesn't make it impossible. I edit 1080p video all the time on my PC laptop, and I rarely go above 40% CPU usage until I export.
How well smoothly premiere pro cs5 run on the 13inch

Try CS55.5 on a 6 core with a high end Nvidia GPU.
You'll understand.
It's just too slow on a Mac Air.

Actually it does mean that it does not work.
The GPU is not supported for GPGPU accleration and the CPU is too slow.
It cannot process anything faster then a 480p video and even at that it's too slow.
It will not work with any HD video.

I am talking about video editing.
The 320m can play 1080p.
