Dude- Don't listen to ANY of these Jealous Negative Ninnies..Coming from someone older than you, who's played and listened to A LOT of Blues, this may seem like "simple" or "common sense:, but YOU'D BE SURPRISED, at how many "shredders", who try to play 100,000 notes a song, DON'T KNOW, OR FORGOT, THIS SIMPLE PREMISE OF THE BLUES, which is the Father of Rock and Roll. And it has the Advantage of sounding cool!
Seriously, i've been searching all day for a decent lesson on how to slide, this vid is the bollocks! Dude your fuckin awsome and have inspired me to pick up my axe again! LEGEND!
In the old days these genius players would just use anything they can get to make a string and they were still legends. Try not to put so much emphasis on the strings he's using. He obvious knows what he's doing and he likes it...

enjoyed ur playing mate.have u ever heard of an irish blues guitarest called rory gallagher?he was one of the all time greats at slide.good of u to share.
I´ve played acoustic blues for a few years but never tried slide, it seemed like it was too difficult. Then I watched this! you explain it so well I´m not scared of it any more. Thanks.
Thanks for supporting the openness that's required for real musicians to find their own "voice". A lot of people trying to...how to say...learn but they just copy. You provided a GREAT point for someone to write almost an entire song. Coming from an experienced player. Very cool man.
GREAT guitar playing. Great lesson. Short and sweet. Helps out alot. Thanks man. Keep posting these videos. You are an awesome teacher. Wish there were teachers like you in my neck of the woods. Thanks again.
you can just go to a hardware store and fit a piece of pipe to fit over your pinky or whatever finger you plan to use. No need to spend $10 for a name. The old blues guys used to use pocket knives or whatever was laying around.
ok i normally don't sign into this account anymore, but i had to get on here to say....the reason you are missing it is...you are basing your scales on the Gm pent....the 1/4/5 is based off of GM....so your 1/4/5 = g/c/d.....then you play your penta or blues scales over that basis...hopes this helped
Methical40, to answer your 2nd question, think of a piano. If you put your finger on the G note, you have to move to the right FIVE keys (half steps) to get to C. That's why C is on the 5th fret when in Open G. This 5 half step rule is true for any major key. If you put your finger on an A on a piano and move 5 keys to the right, you'll end up on D, which is the FOURTH chord of the A major scale. To understand why, google "Major Scales" and start reading!
Hey, great playing. I have been practicing your 32 20 lesson off and on for over a year now. I was thinking of getting a resonator guitar. I now play on an Epiphone Hummingbird which is a cheap guitar but it's my first and I love it. Do you have any recommendations on a resonator for about $300-$500 range. Much appreciated your advice and all your videos. Thanks
I don't know if I'm late or not, but Fender has some really cheap, but good resonators. $ 400 gets a decent guitar that looks and sounds great, plus it's a fender!
hey brother i just ben playing for a week or so now i have a video on my page if you culd check it out leave me a coment or sumthing i wold like it if you made a video detailing some finger picked turnarounds and how you add that thump intoo your playing when you hit the bass notes thanksmuch bro -- josh
Sir this was an amazing lesson thanks so much for posting I have been playing standard guitar for years but slide is new to me, this helped out a lot you get a 5 star rating I will subscribe now thanks again.
some great tips there , thanks i'll try some out, also have you tried a sort of 7th note turnaround , using top E and b from the 2nd fret to open then slide up to the 7th fret with all strings to end , sound nice in open d tuning , i'll film it soon and try to show you what i mean
Yeah man, this video was sweet. I'm trying to play more slide as tbh, right now I don't get it for shit though I play other delta blues stuff. Again, great video; thanks for uploading.

You are one badass motherfucker dude. I've been playing 11 years, but only ever really concentrated on blues and metal. I've formed something of a southern rock project lately though, thought I'd look into slide playing for the first time "properly", and you explained it so well I picked it up in minutes. Thanks a million man, you're the shit.
Good job on this vid man i enjoyed it i just started lerning the slide guitar about 1 week ago and i have been geting some ideals from your music and i think you did really well on this vid keep up the good work!!! :)
@RamboDobs I was just about to post a comment stating exactly what you just said. He's defiantly better then alot of other guitarists trying to give lessons on youtube
Dude! Now that's how to teach guitar! So many videos just suck or all they care about is selling their stuff. Your video was really helpful and it just cut out all the BS. Thanks for posting it. I've been playing around with my slide in D (DADF#AD) but i'm going to tune to open G and fool around with what I just saw you do. 5 stars!!
Could you give a lesson of Walkin' Blues by Robert Johnson with (right hand pattern) slide positions and left hand fingerings and tuning for this tune? Your a great player/teacher. Please try to focus more on right hand patterns. Thanks
what happened to this video...??I don't know if my computer is fucking up or what. Did you delete it? I hope not. It was awsome. I've been searching Youtube high and low for a video like this. Your teaching style is awsome...Can you make another slide lesson PLEASE..!! and maybe put together an example of a complete song or progression to use as refference. Thanks a lot for putting this out there.....! got any recomendations for slide players I should be listening too??
hey man i have a fender acoustic (i wish i had a dobro though) that i use for my slide blues, and i can't seem to get a good clean tone while using the slide. i was wonderin if possibly its the strings or the slide thats making it sound scratchy and coarse. i have a glass slide, a porcelain slide, and a brass one thats tapered. i have on it D'Addarios...you seem like the kinda guy who knows his shit...any help would be great...
is there anyway you could post a vid?w/o seeing you play ,the best thing i can say is...you probably need to raise your string height a little at a time untill you get rid of unwanted noise..secondly make sure you're resting a finger lightly behind the slide to dampen the excess noise...if these two things dont help...try to post a vid.thanks for watchin' bro
you were definately right about the string height issue. i wanted to use my acoustic but i'd have to change the nut at the top of the neck right? because the action on my acoustic is maddd low. so for now im using my les paul and im leavin the action slightly higher than i would normally and it seems to work. i threw 2 vids up on my page now. thanks for your help
i've recently become infatuated with the blues. it's been all i've listened to for the past month or so. i made a slide out of a wine bottle and i was messing around with open g tuning, this video really helped with that though. your other videos are killer as well. i found you through the 32-20 video, but all of your videos are awesome. keep up the good work, man
haha thats funny...yeah i can see how the head thing could get to ya!!thanks for checkin it out larry, love your vids man...lemme know if ya get that slide out!!make a vid...
I notice you have several blues instructional videos up on YouTube. Would you like to do an email interview for Delta Boogie and I could post it with links to your videos and an embed or two.
im glad you brought this up,string height and gauge are a HUGE factor when dealing w/ slide.one thing you might try is,,take your nut out and shim it w/ small pieces of paper 'till right after it stops buzzing.you wanna still be able to fret notes but high enough to get a 'lil agressive w/ it.onece you know how high you need it.you can get a blank nut from a music store and file it yourself or have them do it to your reference.also try out some different slides while you're there....
i will also alot of times flatten the seventh, but i think the most important thing w/ blues is to play the true "blue notes"..notes that cannot be written.such as the sound between Db & D...there is some controversy that it even exist, but i think to get an authentic sound...you have to believe it...just my opinion..hope that didnt go to far...
Thanks. I bought a slide 2 months ago, but I couldn't find decent videos that show how to play it. Then I just found your video today, and i'm trying it again. So this is what I think I learned from your video: first play 4 bars in G ( open strings or 12 fret, then 2 bars in C (5 fret), then 2 bars in G, then 2 bars in D (7 fret), then the turnaround. If this is right, then you can put it in the description of your video to help other beginners like me. Will you do another Slide guitar lesson?
Perfect...helped huge....thanks

This is what confuses me about the blues. You got your standard 1-4-5 setup. Now saying your in standard tuning, Key of G.
Your 1 is fret 3 on E string, and then people say move to fret 3 on A string for your 4th. But its the THIRD note in the Gm pentatonic (G, A#, C) !!!
Now i thought with open tuning and open strings as your one (makes sense), then its logical for your 4th to be....well...fret 4 but its 5 ?
methical40 1 year ago
@methical40
ok i normally don't sign into this account anymore, but i had to get on here to say....the reason you are missing it is...you are basing your scales on the Gm pent....the 1/4/5 is based off of GM....so your 1/4/5 = g/c/d.....then you play your penta or blues scales over that basis...hopes this helped

i've recently become infatuated with the blues. it's been all i've listened to for the past month or so. i made a slide out of a wine bottle and i was messing around with open g tuning, this video really helped with that though. your other videos are killer as well. i found you through the 32-20 video, but all of your videos are awesome. keep up the good work, man

Gatemouth,
I enjoyed this slide lesson. Makes me want to find my slide and work at it.
I realize you're trying to keep the focus on the guitar but having the top of your head cut off is a little disconcerting for me.
That said, the instructional content and musicality is excellent.
Thanks,
Hairy Larry

gatemouth,
I notice you have several blues instructional videos up on YouTube. Would you like to do an email interview for Delta Boogie and I could post it with links to your videos and an embed or two.
Thanks,
Hairy Larry

Outstanding vid! Taught me not to give up on experimenting with different tunings...
Slide is tricky at the moment as I seem to be either pressing too hard or buzzing the damn strings. You make it look so smooth and effortless.
I've heard that glass is smoother but my brass slide (Dunlop 222 Medium)sounds gritty which is what I'm listening for.
Btw, what brand is your Dobro? I've got an identical looking Monterey about a couple months old now.
That's enough bullshit drooling form me for now.

im glad you brought this up,string height and gauge are a HUGE factor when dealing w/ slide.one thing you might try is,,take your nut out and shim it w/ small pieces of paper 'till right after it stops buzzing.you wanna still be able to fret notes but high enough to get a 'lil agressive w/ it.onece you know how high you need it.you can get a blank nut from a music store and file it yourself or have them do it to your reference.also try out some different slides while you're there....
thanks

Do you use some kindof bluesscale for your 'vocal lines or response'?
cwli123 3 years ago
G Blues scale
G - Bb - C - Db - D - F - G
i will also alot of times flatten the seventh, but i think the most important thing w/ blues is to play the true "blue notes"..notes that cannot be written.such as the sound between Db & D...there is some controversy that it even exist, but i think to get an authentic sound...you have to believe it...just my opinion..hope that didnt go to far...

Will you do another Slide guitar lesson?
cwli123 3 years ago
what you describe is a perfectly fine way to play it..i'm playing it a little differently though..
4 BARS G
2 BARS C
2 BARS G
1 BAR D
1 BAR C
1 BAR G
1 bar turnaround or resolve
again that's just another way to do it..and..yes i will be making more slide videos..thanks for your interest...btw what kind of camera do you use?
