  • Perfect...helped huge....thanks

  • helped heaps thanks man

  • That helps. Fastest way to

Learn. Slide and a good way as well. Ty.

  • Great stuff man

  • Hey, thanks for being here man, I learned so much from you!

  • Great tutorial.

  • Dude- Don't listen to ANY of these Jealous Negative Ninnies..Coming from someone older than you, who's played and listened to A LOT of Blues, this may seem like "simple" or "common sense:, but YOU'D BE SURPRISED, at how many "shredders", who try to play 100,000 notes a song, DON'T KNOW, OR FORGOT, THIS SIMPLE PREMISE OF THE BLUES, which is the Father of Rock and Roll. And it has the Advantage of sounding cool!

  • Very Cool !!!, sounds beautiful !

  • Seriously one of the best instructional videos I've seen on YouTube. Thanks from a blues noob.

  • What guitar are you using in this video?

  • Comment removed

  • What string do you use? My strings sound shitty. -_-

Great video btw, you're a beast at the slide.

  • @dimmuwes66

In the old days these genius players would just use anything they can get to make a string and they were still legends. Try not to put so much emphasis on the strings he's using. He obvious knows what he's doing and he likes it...

  • Thanks man, very helpful and easy to follow.

  • I really really dig your style. iv had a slide for a while but haven't had much fun with it till now. thanks a lot.

  • Thanks for supporting the openness that's required for real musicians to find their own "voice". A lot of people trying to...how to say...learn but they just copy. You provided a GREAT point for someone to write almost an entire song. Coming from an experienced player. Very cool man.

  • Great vid. Thank you.

  • Damn best lessons on the net period.

  • Great playing, that sounds super soulful. Love the guitar.

  • What kind of dobro is that? Super nice sounding guitar.

  • Mate, cheers for this vid. Found my slide, got out the whiskey and dries and have been belting out some tunes. Thanks again, Steele.

  • hay man im scottish but it sounds good to me man you should have more confadence

  • bad ass!!!

  • That guitar so cool! Did u learn to play by ear or what?

  • Man you aint nothing but Good!

  • haha solid snake

  • exellent

  • I want to buy a slide and im going to buy the joe perry one for now its $10.

Does anybody know a good slide I could buy ?

  • @Ben80997 any dunlop slide.

  • you can just go to a hardware store and fit a piece of pipe to fit over your pinky or whatever finger you plan to use. No need to spend $10 for a name. The old blues guys used to use pocket knives or whatever was laying around.

  • make your own, i have a homemade one and a store bought one and my homemade sounds better and feels more authentic

  • @Ben80997 id say any one is good to start ... just dont buy a glass one cause if it shatters it will brake your heart ....

  • This is what confuses me about the blues. You got your standard 1-4-5 setup. Now saying your in standard tuning, Key of G.

Your 1 is fret 3 on E string, and then people say move to fret 3 on A string for your 4th. But its the THIRD note in the Gm pentatonic (G, A#, C) !!!

Now i thought with open tuning and open strings as your one (makes sense), then its logical for your 4th to be....well...fret 4 but its 5 ?

  • @methical40

ok i normally don't sign into this account anymore, but i had to get on here to say....the reason you are missing it is...you are basing your scales on the Gm pent....the 1/4/5 is based off of GM....so your 1/4/5 = g/c/d.....then you play your penta or blues scales over that basis...hopes this helped

  • @gatemouthbrown

Methical40, to answer your 2nd question, think of a piano. If you put your finger on the G note, you have to move to the right FIVE keys (half steps) to get to C. That's why C is on the 5th fret when in Open G. This 5 half step rule is true for any major key. If you put your finger on an A on a piano and move 5 keys to the right, you'll end up on D, which is the FOURTH chord of the A major scale. To understand why, google "Major Scales" and start reading!

  • Very Helpful Thanks from a beginner

  • suddenly,....many things just made sense,thanks dude,nice blues!!!

  • omg. this video helped me out A LOT!!!

ive watched a lot of other "how to videos" but i couuldnt really get it, but urs i picked it up pretty quick.

    thanks man :)

  • i like that. "give it some snap. some fukin attitude" haha nice man.

  • sweet tats man, great playing :)

  • You must be a great teacher,...suddenly,....many things just made sense after watching your vid. Thanks man!

  • 5 stars brotha man... your lessons are great, you get to the point and explain it right... you got soul fa sho. this is how lessons should be done

  • Hey, great playing. I have been practicing your 32 20 lesson off and on for over a year now. I was thinking of getting a resonator guitar. I now play on an Epiphone Hummingbird which is a cheap guitar but it's my first and I love it. Do you have any recommendations on a resonator for about $300-$500 range. Much appreciated your advice and all your videos. Thanks

  • I don't know if I'm late or not, but Fender has some really cheap, but good resonators. $ 400 gets a decent guitar that looks and sounds great, plus it's a fender!

  • hey brother i just ben playing for a week or so now i have a video on my page if you culd check it out leave me a coment or sumthing i wold like it if you made a video detailing some finger picked turnarounds and how you add that thump intoo your playing when you hit the bass notes thanksmuch bro -- josh

  • Very well explained man. Glad to see you keeping the blues out there.

  • Sir this was an amazing lesson thanks so much for posting I have been playing standard guitar for years but slide is new to me, this helped out a lot you get a 5 star rating I will subscribe now thanks again.

  • Dude u got some deep mojo brothaman keep doin lessons (but wait till spring when its warm haha)

  • This is like trying to teach the theory of relativity to a dog, some will get it, but most wont. Sorry.

  • Or not. You don't have to know a lot about guitar to understand this. Only I, IV, V chords. The sound of them.

  • its really easy dude

  • are you suppose to press down hard with the slide or just lightly glide across the strings?

  • No pressing down. Just lightly glide and enjoy sliding

  • ur a bad dude man.

  • some great tips there , thanks i'll try some out, also have you tried a sort of 7th note turnaround , using top E and b from the 2nd fret to open then slide up to the 7th fret with all strings to end , sound nice in open d tuning , i'll film it soon and try to show you what i mean

  • niiiiiiiiiiiiiice

    i love that tone!

  • sarebbe molto bello ricevere queste lezioni in italiano!

  • Yeah man, this video was sweet. I'm trying to play more slide as tbh, right now I don't get it for shit though I play other delta blues stuff. Again, great video; thanks for uploading.

  • Wow, that is a nice guitar.

    Good lesson.

  • way to not fuck around and lay it down, great pickin as well

  • Nice lesson! You made it really easy to understand. Thanks.

  • nice lesson m8 uve helped me loads :) cheers dude

  • Dude, I've watched alota blues, and i wanted to make fun of you in the 30-20 blues, for puttin ur cig up in guitar, but ur fuckin nasty man.Hope your teachin little kids blues for some loot and getting your ass touring soon. Thanks for not beein a sales pitch for yourself!

  • I do not hand out compliments lightly.

You seem as if you think you are not good at teaching, when it is rather obvious you have a special ability to do so,,,

  • You are one badass motherfucker dude. I've been playing 11 years, but only ever really concentrated on blues and metal. I've formed something of a southern rock project lately though, thought I'd look into slide playing for the first time "properly", and you explained it so well I picked it up in minutes. Thanks a million man, you're the shit.

  • Thanks, thanks, thanks!!!

  • Thanks a lot for the slide lesson! Mighty generous of you!

  • Good job on this vid man i enjoyed it i just started lerning the slide guitar about 1 week ago and i have been geting some ideals from your music and i think you did really well on this vid keep up the good work!!! :)

  • Easiest and most efficient at teaching! Excellent work man! Best guitar lesson I have EVER received

  • @RamboDobs I was just about to post a comment stating exactly what you just said. He's defiantly better then alot of other guitarists trying to give lessons on youtube

  • comment of the year "give it some fucking attitude" right on bruver

  • Awesome video, you make it so easy to understand the basics, no BS :-D

  • Dude! Now that's how to teach guitar! So many videos just suck or all they care about is selling their stuff. Your video was really helpful and it just cut out all the BS. Thanks for posting it. I've been playing around with my slide in D (DADF#AD) but i'm going to tune to open G and fool around with what I just saw you do. 5 stars!!

  • Could you give a lesson of Walkin' Blues by Robert Johnson with (right hand pattern) slide positions and left hand fingerings and tuning for this tune? Your a great player/teacher. Please try to focus more on right hand patterns. Thanks

  • I love to hear you play.

  • nice gatemouth..u got another sub!

  • THANKS!!!! THANKS!! THANKS!!

  • hey man, this is really terrific. thanks a lot!

  • great stuff man!!!!

  • Nice, sweet tone.

  • Many thanks, man, I've tried and given up at playing slide so many times and this has really helped me.

  • what happened to this video...??I don't know if my computer is fucking up or what. Did you delete it? I hope not. It was awsome. I've been searching Youtube high and low for a video like this. Your teaching style is awsome...Can you make another slide lesson PLEASE..!! and maybe put together an example of a complete song or progression to use as refference. Thanks a lot for putting this out there.....! got any recomendations for slide players I should be listening too??

    Fuzz

  • Best blues tune ever! Thanks a lot, mate! You are doing an awesome job!!!! Now I can start stealing licks from folks like Doug MacLeod!

  • i'm going to work this man ! thanks from France !

  • hey man i have a fender acoustic (i wish i had a dobro though) that i use for my slide blues, and i can't seem to get a good clean tone while using the slide. i was wonderin if possibly its the strings or the slide thats making it sound scratchy and coarse. i have a glass slide, a porcelain slide, and a brass one thats tapered. i have on it D'Addarios...you seem like the kinda guy who knows his shit...any help would be great...

    thanks,

    steve

  • hey man,

is there anyway you could post a vid?w/o seeing you play ,the best thing i can say is...you probably need to raise your string height a little at a time untill you get rid of unwanted noise..secondly make sure you're resting a finger lightly behind the slide to dampen the excess noise...if these two things dont help...try to post a vid.thanks for watchin' bro

  • you were definately right about the string height issue. i wanted to use my acoustic but i'd have to change the nut at the top of the neck right? because the action on my acoustic is maddd low. so for now im using my les paul and im leavin the action slightly higher than i would normally and it seems to work. i threw 2 vids up on my page now. thanks for your help

  • sometimes you can just raise the nut action by placing , say , a cut playing card under it, instead of changing the whole thing out

  • amazing lesson man.

  • youre very good at blues man, i play slide blues at a standard tunning, but could you tellme how to get open g tunning.

    pd, nice dobro

  • i've recently become infatuated with the blues. it's been all i've listened to for the past month or so. i made a slide out of a wine bottle and i was messing around with open g tuning, this video really helped with that though. your other videos are killer as well. i found you through the 32-20 video, but all of your videos are awesome. keep up the good work, man

  • good stuff man, what kind of guitar is that? Sounds killer

  • what a bad ass guitar!!!!

  • Just thought about it, any vocals with these cool blues?

  • just got a resonator, your vid helped me alot thankx!

  • Gatemouth,

I enjoyed this slide lesson. Makes me want to find my slide and work at it.

I realize you're trying to keep the focus on the guitar but having the top of your head cut off is a little disconcerting for me.

That said, the instructional content and musicality is excellent.

    Thanks,

    Hairy Larry

  • haha thats funny...yeah i can see how the head thing could get to ya!!thanks for checkin it out larry, love your vids man...lemme know if ya get that slide out!!make a vid...

    later bro

  • gatemouth,

I notice you have several blues instructional videos up on YouTube. Would you like to do an email interview for Delta Boogie and I could post it with links to your videos and an embed or two.

    Thanks,

    Hairy Larry

  • sounds like a plan man...i'd love too...could you send me the link to the site you're referring too?look forward to it larry...

  • i definitely like your playing and your guitar, where can i buy something like that?

  • Thanks for the lesson! What brand guitar is that? Sounds great.

    Keep on keeping on...

  • i think i'm in love...

  • Hey, great playing, loved it.

  • Nice work!!

  • Fantasic Video! Really helpful.

Now i'm gonna go give it some fuckin' attitude! ha ha.

  • Totally fucking awesome playing and real teachin' man. Keep it up.

  • thanks man lol

  • Outstanding vid! Taught me not to give up on experimenting with different tunings...

Slide is tricky at the moment as I seem to be either pressing too hard or buzzing the damn strings. You make it look so smooth and effortless.

I've heard that glass is smoother but my brass slide (Dunlop 222 Medium)sounds gritty which is what I'm listening for.

Btw, what brand is your Dobro? I've got an identical looking Monterey about a couple months old now.

That's enough bullshit drooling form me for now.

  • im glad you brought this up,string height and gauge are a HUGE factor when dealing w/ slide.one thing you might try is,,take your nut out and shim it w/ small pieces of paper 'till right after it stops buzzing.you wanna still be able to fret notes but high enough to get a 'lil agressive w/ it.onece you know how high you need it.you can get a blank nut from a music store and file it yourself or have them do it to your reference.also try out some different slides while you're there....

    thanks

  • That's pretty cool man. It gave me a lot of feelings listening to it. Thanks for the invite

  • thanks for checking it out, glad ya liked it!!

  • Great stuff man! Thanks for sharing your skills.

  • thanks man,same here!!

  • Thanks, I was almost gonna let go my FR-50. I'll be keepin' her now!

  • that's awesome bro!! fr-50 is a beautiful dobro.glad to know you'll be playin' it.good luck, and let me know how it works out...

    thanks

  • Comment removed

  • This is fantastic dude! I wish I could play like you

  • you can bro..go buy a cheap pawn shop guitar and join in..lol..thanks!!

  • Sounds great man! Awesome lesson! I dig that guitar!

    Five stars......

    Eloy

  • Do you use some kindof bluesscale for your 'vocal lines or response'?

  • G Blues scale

    G - Bb - C - Db - D - F - G

i will also alot of times flatten the seventh, but i think the most important thing w/ blues is to play the true "blue notes"..notes that cannot be written.such as the sound between Db & D...there is some controversy that it even exist, but i think to get an authentic sound...you have to believe it...just my opinion..hope that didnt go to far...

  • Thanks. I bought a slide 2 months ago, but I couldn't find decent videos that show how to play it. Then I just found your video today, and i'm trying it again. So this is what I think I learned from your video: first play 4 bars in G ( open strings or 12 fret, then 2 bars in C (5 fret), then 2 bars in G, then 2 bars in D (7 fret), then the turnaround. If this is right, then you can put it in the description of your video to help other beginners like me. Will you do another Slide guitar lesson?

  • what you describe is a perfectly fine way to play it..i'm playing it a little differently though..

    4 BARS G

    2 BARS C

    2 BARS G

    1 BAR D

    1 BAR C

    1 BAR G

    1 bar turnaround or resolve

again that's just another way to do it..and..yes i will be making more slide videos..thanks for your interest...btw what kind of camera do you use?
