  • keith is not my drummer prefer,i prefer carter beaufort, steve smith, jojo mayer, stanton moore and opther, but he is a good drummer

  • Holy crap he's lost a lot of weight!!

  • 1:34 - 1:36 brought warmth to my heart.

  • Something tells me, sitting down with this dude and having a triple cheeseburger and talking music would be awesome!

  • he's so stiff.. there's no power in his strokes man..

  • So strange because his work on Morph the Cat is so simple and straight forward. You would never guess what a feakin' monster this dude is on drums.

I like his work on Tal's album too. But holy shit is this guy good. His stick control is nuts.

  • @PlymouthVT I thought the "morph the cat" album was more precise, rather than straight forward. Listening to the his control on that album gave me the feeling of someone with ridiculously good chops. Just hearing the way he kept the some of the 16th note bass drum grooves tight like in "bright night gown", or the intricately controlled high-hat fills in "what i do." The stick control on "mary shut..." His drumming was brilliant!

Anyway, listen too it again, you'll pleasantly surprised ;)

  • @bucketambience No you are very correct I undersold him with my comment. His hi hat work alone with the tiny slight offset's was outrageous. Like he was behind time on the hi hat. If I was a dog my ears would have been tilting back and forth.

Fantastic. I learned alot just listening.

You had to know how good he was but really when you see his solo's its just a "wtf" moment. At least for me.

He's my favorite drummer. Thank you.

  • ya well...that bass drum sounds stock...but the player sounds incredible...

  • yay! that's my bassdrum sound!

    hooray and more!

  • Hmm nothing new in the planet earth....

  • Great camera angle! Shows how relaxed grip he has on the sticks, this man has mastered the Muller technique... sounds like if Steve Gadd & Billy Martin had a love child

  • the bass drum doesnt sound too nice

  • @alfiebonassward96 matter of taste... I think it sounds great, a little bit like the primus bassdrum. stomping

  • @alfiebonassward96 serious? it sounds so good he uses it as the centrepiece for whole phrases lol.

  • This guy is the better one, of new generations of drummers !!!!

  • B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L.

  • I really like these guys!!!

  • Now there is a man that likes his ride cymbals.

  • I think I am one of the very few blessed people who saw Wayne performing live up close and in face!

  • What is the K on the left? The zildjian site doesn't give this setup. I remember reading it was a 19 inch but what type? Crash?

  • @webstercat k custom ride i have heard

  • @webstercat doesnt look like a 19 to me, but it does sound like a ride. if it is a 19" it could be the Session Ride, but I would be willing to bet regardless that it is a K Custom

  • @avedisdrummer989 I think it's one of the old K Custom Special Dry Crashes that they put out in the early 2000's. They just reissued them as part of the Rarities line.

  • i don't get how he doesn't drop his stick. he holds it so loosely yet has such great control...

  • this band has a lot of power! you can see it in the people, who listen!

  • hopeless music this....

  • Cant get over how much weight he has lost D:

  • anyone know which krantz tune this is?

  • I respect your opinion. I saw Buddy play live and he wasn't stiff at all. If Keith's playing really knocks you out, then fantastic! I never said anything negative. All I said was ( in my opinion ) the drummers I mentioned knocked me out with their playing. I was comparing this to what was happening in the 60s and 70s era. It was so new. I was spoiled. That's all.....

  • @jazzmancny ...and if it wasn't for Buddy and Krupa, we wouldn't have Carlock or Jo Jo Mayer. Had the drum evolution gone in another direction, the playing landscape would be so different now. Any drummer who ignores Buddy is just a fool I think! The young generation will always hear someone like Carlock and imagine the way he plays just came out of the air! The truth is, to be great, you have to understand what the greats did before.

  • @IfIfsandands You are so right. Everyone has evolved from others. Thats why I feel its important to listen to many different styles and take what interests you and expand on those concepts. Isnt music incredible. Its another language where we can say what we want.

  • To me it looks like he's trying too hard. I know he sounds great and all. I saw him live with Steely Dan I watched all the greats over the years . For instance Tony sounded and looked a lot looser when he played. I think it's great to praise players when they make a mark in th business. I guess I was spoiled by watching Elvin, Roy,Buddy,Max,Tony,Lenny,Billy,Jack and more recently Vinnie and Dave. To me they are on another level. It's hard to get all that excited about this stuff .

  • @jazzmancny who cares about the looks mate, watch a Buddy Rich solo, I've always thought that Buddy looked stiff as a board, and also like he was on the edge of exploding completely cause he looks so tense sometimes, but he's still awesome yeah? As is Keith, I would put him on the same level as the players you mentioned, after watching some of his other videos I really think that he's up there with the greats.

  • @jazzmancny - does it *sound* like Carlock is trying too hard? That's all that counts.

  • He's recently become one of my favourite drummers, but he needs to eat some vegetables and spend some time in sunshine

  • I think Keith plays ok. He's tough to watch. It'scertainly very unhip. There's a billion great drummers. He's good. But he looks like a total stiff. No insult intended 'caus I do think he can play.

  • @jazzmancny Good for Keith, Sting and John Mayer think he is hip! Their opinion trumps yours. If the greatest musicians in the world hire you who cares what a youtube poster thinks?

  • @webstercat Amen. He gets hired for a reason, he's really good. Steely Dan for example has had a parade of legendary drummers and Keith made the cut.

  • i think he could benefit from a 20" kick. sorry, but the sound of that kick is awful

  • @Buhzie15 on the dvd he says that he's using a 20" kick

  • @Buhzie15 besides, that's his unique sound

  • Love his sound and groove, but I think his playing really looks bad :p

  • Why does Keith Carlock get too weight ? I don't believe it.

  • ONE OF THE BEST BANDS OF RECENT YEARS....EASILY!

  • My God man, you really need ...oh never mind can't waste my breath.

  • Why does he always look so greasy?

  • @jacoe99 yeah he needs a make over. Im not a fag or anything but that hair cut does nothing for him, makes him look like a peedo.

  • Regal Tip sticks are pretty much amazing. The only downfall is that the shoulder on most of them are way too thin, therefore they break or get a large crack.

  • @spacitydrummer4JC regal tips are good, but the finish on them doesnt always feel the same. sometimes its sticky with a good grip, but if your hands are already sweaty before a show they will slip right out. IMO, vic firth is the best for grip, durability and quality control. vaters are durable but very inconsistent with weight matching. In order, I would say 1. VF 2. Pro mark 3. Regal tip 4. Vater. I know theres probably some brands I am missing, but these are the ones I have tried.

  • i need to get a 2nd floor tom....

  • is he wearing an ipad?

  • che merda la maglia coll'i phone. mazza che panza de dio. però spacchi. però porco dio su youtube parlano tutti inglese

  • what a lovely cymbal setup.

  • carlock is def one of my fave drummers... he has a distinct sound that is like his and his only.... however... i do not like the sound of the yamaha phoenixes... idk i watched this and the weckl joints.. the absolutes appeal to me more (just a personal preference)... KC is the man though

  • This is awesome. Wayne plays the kind of stuff I want to play.

  • Solid.

  • inseobkim, i accidentally hit the spam button on your comment, sorry bout that

  • oh wow! his foot is soooo loose on that bass drum peddle. my foot is always perched at the nose of the peddle and i do those quick jerks with the beater resting on the drum itself between hits, its just how i learned it and find playing otherwise to be extremely difficult..

  • i was on his concert tonght (Mapo, South Korea) and this band was like Alien playing. They were just aweosme..

  • breathe keithy.. breaaathe. hah kidding the guys a marvel

  • chungiemunchin in regards to your question,i'm not 100% sure but i want to say it was the SD-4440. The show was incredible, but the kit could have used an OH mic.

  • Do you recall or could you tell which snare drum he was using as his main for that night? Was it his trusty Yamaha SD-1403 or was it his Yamaha SD-4440?

  • Just saw these guys in Nashville at 3rd and Lindsley a few nights ago. They were incredible live. Played for over two hours!

  • His dynamics couldnt be more perfect

  • When you say "dynamics" what do you mean. Excuse my ignorance I'm not a musician. I'm just curious.

  • dynamics refers to the volume of each note... better musicians have a lot more control of volume than most

his phrasing is really good too (length and timing of each note)

  • Dynamics are basically loud vs soft. You listen to the volume of the rest of the group and play accordingly.

  • Thanks for the knowledge!!!

  • @DarkHalo08 its just a fancy way to say volume change

  • nice playing but I think the Bass Drum sounds terrible, just my opinion though, nothing against Carlock.

  • It's a totally unique sound...I love it for his style of playing, I could never get a handle on a bass drum that lively sounding.

It's really open and has a really odd attack.

  • I agree, it's very odd. It seems to work well with the music though. It's almost uniquely his own like Bonham's "signature sound" bass drum.

  • that yamaha pedal looks really good :)

  • Stop saying drums are too quiet, Its a trio performance, The drums arent supposed to be overpowering everything else, Its all supposed to go together to compliment each instrument

  • Drums are too loud. Awesome, but far too loud.

  • Comment removed

  • define QUIET drums ?

  • i agree, krantz can't be heard clearly.

  • Hey, this is taken from a drum DVD. What do you expect?

  • It's a drum dvd duh!!! It's made for drummers not guitar players.

  • The take of this on Wayne's myspace is sick as well.

  • He's really good. How to play like that

  • love it!

  • def one of my fav drummers!!

  • keith is a sick player

  • Then what do you call the "marshall", or "bogner" clearly visible behind Wayne? I've seen wayne not on this vid where he had the Tyler logo covered. it may remain a mystery.

  • No free product shots, probably. Sometimes drummers are asked/told to cover the bass drum logos for the same reason.

  • Wow, Amazing playing !! Love it !!! Why has Krantz covered the Tyler logo on the headstock...any idea ?

  • this is jazz cat´s stuff W/O any reason ...

  • Wow, these guys are in top form, killer album, new dvd, and they're gonna tour in december.

  • I like his grip, it's definitely refreshing and het gets a good sound of it!

  • The grip of his left hand at .15 makes it look like he is sticking the finger at that random dude over there

  • i think his right hand is actually really smooth he has a really good thing going for him but what I don't understand is the traditional grip soooo far back, he is literally at the butt of the stick... I dunno how he makes it work

  • yeah sure does annoy me how good his right hand sounds too... yeah man thats how a ride cymbal should sound, how he gets that sound is with killer technique and balance... annoyance is when people dont understand whats up!

  • @ocdrumboy1 Also, if you've ever tried his signature stick, the stick is designed to get that wonderful soft, warm yet defined sound from the cymbals. Probably the best stick I've ever played, so if you're on the market for sticks definitely pick those up.

  • @ocdrumboy1

Annoyance is when people don't TRY to understand what's up!

  • Great drumming..

  • I've never seen anyone else play with that sort of technique....I would break my students hand if they ever slipped that far back in traditional grip but it really seems to work for this guy....impressive. Very fluid.

  • check out the master, Peter Erskine, for a very similar left hand grip. while I agree about your view towards your students, every drummer needs to find their own voice. and grip is part of that. you have to learn the rules before you can break them. I've found that the longer I've played, the more my grip has evolved.

  • i love the fills he does with flams on the toms

  • nice! its like jazz meets rock fusion! never heard of this guy.. he rocks, he sure can feel the music!

  • The DVD contains a four-song set/clinic by Krantz's trio?! I'm sold. Pre-ordering right this minute.

  • Bitchen!!!!!
