It was so obviously a reaction to the racists because all of this took place within a 2 week span, from the Angie/Cliff breakup to his remarrying Nina for the 4th or 5th time. It was also around this time that Peter Bergman was suddenly fired from AMC, after many years and his wife was pregnant. he had the last laugh though because he was picked up right away by Y&R to replace Terry Lester and won his first of many Lead Actor Emmy's right away.

@ilar926 you know Debbi talked about that in an interview recently, saying that they received alot of hate mail so they both knew Angie & Cliff were going to be broken up & one of them would lose their job. she said she expected it to be her & was surprised when it ended up being Peter. she said he called her before his Y&R audition and she said she told him not to walk but to "F-ing run" LOL & that she knew it would be a role of a lifetime for her. it would be nice to see them paired on Y&R.

They ended Cliff and Angie by bringing Nina back to town all of a sudden, with a sick baby who needed cliff's expertise. They also had Nina all of a sudden decide that Cliff was the baby's father (not Matt, who she had the affair with and married). They also wrote it so that Angie took the high road and "GAVE" him back to Nina--his "true love", so she broke up with him. I had rooted for their reunion the 3 or 4 times after Nina broke his heart but the last time was the final straw.

What about Valerie and David on 'Day of our Lives' during the seventies? Wonderful chemistry.

@jebeja I remember David and Valerie during the mid-70's on DOOL. They let the racists dictate that story, also and ended them by having David sleep with his cousin Mike's girlfriend Trish (?) after Mike and Trish fought. Then Valerie went off to medical school and broke up with David.

Angie and Cliff look better than Angie and Jesse. They should at least let them get arried. They let racists run the show and not love or what they want to do. I think that why PB leave the show. They wanted LIvia and Tom and Angie and Cliff as the interracial super couples of the 90s -. Televison shows need to stop racists people run their shows.

Man, after Angie and Jessie, and Matt/Angie, I freaking LOOOVED Angie/Cliff! I cannot believe the hate mail that both DM/PB received during this s/l.. Haters were all over the place just saying the most ridiculous things about both characters/actors! Hence why they were broken up in favor of Cliff going back to Nina! What a crock!! A/C were best friends and coworkers who fell in love! My fave type of love story! DM/PB had great chemistry and what could have been!! AMC soo caved! Stupid haters!

Well some of your info is wrong. Cliff and Angie weren't necessarily the first "soap opera" interracial couple...for AMC possibly. Before that Tom and Simone of GH were married and way before that there was Mike and Valerie on Days. This also took place in 1989, not 1990

Yes, Tom and Simone on GH were actually the first interracial front burner couple to get married on a soap. I say front burner because I do recall another couple on GH, years before--maybe the 70's that got married before leaving the show but they were only on for a few months and probably non-contract. It was one of thse minor storylines--A blck female doctor and a White male patient, who was blind. Don't remember all of the story details, around the time of the Jane and Howie Dawson story.
