For those comparing, the 5150/6505 and 3120/XXX are very different amps. Both have their place. The 6505 has a chunkier, more raw sound, but far less versatile due to its lack of a true clean channel. 6505 loves scooped tones and its midrange is a bit painful.
The 3120 has PRISTINE clean tones - something rare in Peavey amps aimed at rock / metal, and more gain than you would ever realistically need. The mids are very defined and emphasizes the frequencies that SHOULD be pushed, even for metal
Every single one of the reviews I've seen with this dude absolutely suck...Kinda like those "High Gain Amp" videos "featuring" that dude from Thousand Foot Crutch and Misha Mansoor...
@JAAM013 Basically i hear the difference mostly in the mids, and distortion character, 6L6's are typical of american style amps and tend to be less mid heavy and a little thinner sounding, with a more saturated distortion. EL34's are more common in British amps and give you a more prominent mid range that tends to be crunchier the more you turn up the mids. And you get a lot more chunk and crunch in the distortion with EL34's. I go EL34's all the way, plus they cut through in a mix way better.
@A53R0 Soooooo much better, I own a triple xxx, which is the exact same amp but with a different shell and it smokes the 6505/5150, The 6505 absolutely needs a tube screamer in front in order to get the edge and tightness you want in a mix, This doesn't need a boost what so ever, and has way more punch and clarity. I'd never buy a 6505 with this in existence.
@freakguitar1 I just think the 3120/ Triple XXX is way more convenient, it doesn't need a boost at all, it has a way more versatile mid range. With the 6505, it's a scooped mid tone or bust, when you push up the mids it sounds fuzzier and and less chunky. With this the mid control is way more friendly, when you push the mids instead of getting super warm and fuzzy, it gives you a very marshall-ish mid range crunch and chunk. But it's all in what you're looking for.
@freakguitar1 The 6505 is a much rawer sounding amp, and i find the clean on it to be terrible (just my opinion).
With the 3120/xxx it's a much smoother sounding distortion, and very punchy, it sounds almost as if there is a light compressor working on the distortion channels. And the clean channel is very warm and punchy with the mids pushed and with them scooped it's got a very glassy metallica like tone. I use this amp is a hardcore punk band as well as a Ska punk band. Very versatile amp
@VHTLtdDimarzio He almost dimed the gain on the rhythm channel....That fails by its self...No peavey amp should need more than 6 on the gain knob haha
This head sounds killer, but I wish it had a look more reminiscent of its predecessor the XXX. Because it looks somewhat like an Espresso machine I almost feel tempted to get a JSX instead, even though I'm aware it has less gain on tap.
By the way, anyone here compared the 3120 / XXX to the JSX?
I don't know how he can have the gain turned up so high. My XXX has an unusable amount of gain on tap and I was under the impression they were pretty much the same amplifier except the XXX came stock with 6l6 power tubes.
Waaaaay to much mids! If you are going to do a real review on this amp, and if you are going to play metal dont make it sound like shit, because i think it sounded awsome, but onely when the mids where under 12 o'clock or less. And i own a 6505+ and i have the mids on 0, because over lets say, 3 its sound really wired.
But dont have anything against mids, its onely that metal are notment to be played with that much mid =/ But still a great review =)
@MetallicaAnders You obviously have never played with a drummer. The midrange is vital to a guitar tone, and having mids set at 0 is just plain stupid. The guitar is an instrument that fits in the middle of the frequency range, so having a lot mids is a good thing. When playing with drums, having low mids just leads to increasing the volume which isn't a good solution, because you're not punching trough the mix, you're just bluntly overpowering the other instruments.
@fantasyh I know dude that kills me how all these metal guys cut out their mids completely. It's SO DUMB! At bedroom practice volume, playing BY YOURSELF, sure cutting the mids most of the way will sound tighter, but in a mix jamming with people it is the last thing you wanna do, even in Metal lol. Kills me. I actually just sold my Line6 SpiderValve head because it didn't have ENOUGH mids available. My band has 3 guitarists and it just didn't have enough mids to cut through their peaveys
@Geetarfrik Yeah dude those things definitely cut really well! Marshall amps have never really seemed to aggree with me for some reason though; at least with the kind of music I play. They're definitely badass though; haha other people seem to make them sound just fine;) But yeah I got a 3120 and switched to JJ 6L6's, 1960A 4x12 cab, and my pedals and I'm VERY happy with my new rig! I'm getting an Orange 4x12 soon though other than that I'm totally satisfied;) Peace
@xpidgeonx (sorry for the late reply) yeah, the Marshalls are a little finicky when you first play them. It takes someone whos used their EQs before to really dial in a tone other than their typical raaaaaawwwr sound :P
@fantasyh so true. You kill your mids, you will have trouble pushing over drums or even bass. You can even hear when he drops the mids, how much the volume drops.
Thats what the mixing board is for. How you set your amp up means nothing in regards to the mix. Now, if no one is mixing...then its gonna sound like frantic mess anyway.
@Rizzy55 but in a practice situation you arent going to run a mixing board. Mixing boards are only for live or recording situations. I was playing with my 3120 last weekend at band practice, and i tested the scooped theory, killed my sound and tone completely. The bass is a bass instrument, the guitar is a mid range instrument. Its essentially to have mids. The tubes in the 3120 are el34's as well, which are known for their mid range sound.
@MetallicaAnders You need to play live one day. Scoopage is for fail. The guitar is a midrange instrument. It produces mid-frequency sounds. Cutting out the mids means that the guitar will be inaudible in a mix--the bass frequencies will be overtaken by the bassist and drummer, and all you'll be left with is some quite icepicking sounds.
Sound engineers have a pretty rude nickname for players that scoop their mids for a recording.
@TheDemonsDiary I think their essentially the same except the XXX use different tubes. The 3120 is actually going to be phasing out the XXX, because Peavey doesn't even have it on their website anymore.
den amp hab ich selber angespielt das ist der beste den ich bis jetz gespielt hab der hat soviel gain der drive sound ist echt unschlagbar (finde ich) gneau mein geschmack ^^ , dieser amp ist für metal geschaffen
Because i'm really into the ballsy mid range punchy distortion that you only get out of a Marshall, newer metal amps sound beastly with the mids scooped, but i like to crank the mids to get old school thrash tones, Think Slayer and old Megadeth.
Dude i already tried it, this didn't sound nearly like the marshall, with the mids boosted on this amp it sounds WAY to warm for my taste, it loses it's bite, however if i was playing in a metalcore band, i would absolutely buy this amp. It's just because i play in a hardcore/crossover thrash band and i like old school tones, which this amp will not do. I tried em both, and got the marshall for a reason.
As it's been told to me this amp is a XXX with el34's instead of 6l6's. A peavey rep told me that the stupid diamond plate with the trucker girls of the XXX was too costly to produce. Probably just bullshit though.
@SinisterManiac From what I understand they kept it mostly the same, but made it slightly less metal so that it's usable for other genres. The highs/presence seem a bit less razory, and the bass less powerful. Other than that though, it sounds pretty similar to the Ultra's and XXX before it.
@xntrickk Nope...Triple XXX has 4 preamp tubes too. It is the EXACT same amp with a different name and a different head case. I was 10 minutes away from buying a 3120 when I saw a used Triple X in the corner of my local GC. I bought it for less than the pice of a 3120. #winning
@dingle1 This amp is exactly a Triple XXX but with a different grill, and it ships with el34's instead of 6l6's, Most people who own triple XXX's end up switching over to el34's so i guess peavey took the hint.
This is more similar to the xxx then the 6505 since it has similar knobs like tight loose for tone control. Doesnt have the presence and resonance knob which makes the 6505 shine
The 6505 is a beast, great for like raw metal tones like Unearth and Lamb of god, but the clean channel on it is absolute trash compared to the one on the 3120, this may not be quite as ballsy as as the 6505 in terms of distortion but it is more versatile i think. I tried out a 6505 yesterday, and then this and i was set to buy this untill i came across an early 90's Marshall 6100 LE that blew both out of the water with a boost in front of it.
I played this amp a few times at guitar center and it is possibly the thickest sounding amp distortion, next to the Diamond Nitrox. BUT, the 3120 costs half of the nitrox.
@Geetarfrik i have a xxx(the same amp but cosmetically different) and i had to put a 12dw7 in one of the preamp slots to make have less gain and i run my gain a little less than half way.if you ask me, the key to a good clean metal distortion is to run the gain lower.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
true that. I personally stick with Marshalls and use a digitech grunge for the nosebleed distortion, and I never put the distortion on the pedal past 3. say what you want, this setup kills.
yeah, somethin about the JCM series' clean tone is just amazing. thats why i use the pedal, to get the chimeyness of the JCM900's cleans in a high gain distortion
oh, cause you're Jesus with a guitar, right? Do whatever the hell you want to do with the gain. For fuck sake, are you Satriani in disguise or something??
