Listening to this reminded me of when my primary school arranged a shoebox collection for children in the Ukraine. We all got shoeboxes and decorated them in wrapping paper, and filled them with pencils/colouring books, hairbands, gloves, toothpaste/toothbrushes etc. The whole school did it, and there was a competition between classes to see who could make the most boxes. I remember one year I spent 4 months of pocket money on my boxes! Have you heard of this in the US, or is it just a UK thing?

We don't do the tree until 2-3 weeks before Christmas because we also celbrate the "12 days of Christmas" that begin on Christmas day, so our tree is up for 12 days more starting on Christmas day, and since it's a real tree, we don't chop it down too early or it will get too dry. We have about 800-1200 lights on the tree. Takes most of a day to individually wrap each branch of the noble firs we get from trunk out to the end of each branch. We are developing new traditions over the years too.

In our household, the lights go up on the outside on Thanksgiving weekend, since I always have the Friday off after Thanksgiving. So we use that long weekend to do the outdoor lights. We also get down all the inside lights, village, and decorations from the attic that weekend.

The 1st weekend in December we decorate the living room, kitchen, dining, and bathrooms. We do the tree the 2nd or 3rd weekend of December, usually going out & chopping one down at one of the awesome tree farms nearby.

I have a great Christmas story.. one year my Father was having treatments for cancer, we had very little money because of the costs. On Christmas morning we found a whole bunch of presents wrapped and placed outside our door along with boxes of food. My sister and I received everything we asked for that Christmas and to this day we have no idea who sent them. It was the best Christmas ever, not because of the presents, but because we knew someone out there cared.

In my country (Bulgaria) we have an annual charity holiday thingy (not sure what to call it). It's called the "Bulgarian Christmas". The purpose of it is to raise money for kids with disabilities. My family has a few Christmas traditions. On Christmas Eve, when we were younger my Dad would dress up as Santa and give the kids gifts. We always wondered where Dad was and mom said he was in the shower and they had the water running. We would get a pair of pajamas to wear that night and a Christmas ornament to put on the tree. The tradition is still the same but "Santa" doesn't visit anymore. My parents started this tradition before I was born, So this year I will get my 21st ornament =)

I love hearing about your family's traditions. When I was a kid, my parents kept up the Santa thing for a long time. Unfortunately, they divorced when I was 6 and when my step-father entered the picture, my mom told me about Santa. I now have a brother and a sister who were never allowed to believe in Santa because it takes away from the Xmas story. This was really sad for me because although I respect their religion, the magical aspect of Christmas was one of my favorite childhood memories.

I remember when I was about 8, my school here in England done something called Shoebox Appeal. Each student got an empty shoebox (large or 2 small ones) and then filled them with small gifts and treats and they were given to children in homeless shelters and some went abroad. I done that for 5 years and the school still does it now!

Our school does a thing where we adopt a child in need that had a disorder, or something wrong within their body. We basically raise money for their medical bills just by doing community service! which is amazing!

Actually I did get a bad present one year, not bad, but an unthoughtful gift. I was 14 or 15, and I was given a Barbie set. And this particular relative knew that I was 2 months older than her daughter, so that really really hurt when I opened the gift. I would have rather the relative apologize and say they didn't get me a gift instead re gifting me what her youngest daughter (5-6 y.o) didn't want.

My dad has ruined every holiday ever since I can remember. Just yelling, being negative, saying we don't deserve or appreciate the gifts, etc. I know find myself dreading and hating the holidays. I'm trying to find the happiness everyone else gets from the holidays with my fiance's family now.
