  • I don't understand most of these comments. That is one great F#! Well done.

  • HAHHA shit that sounds funny as hell!

  • well that wasn't the best cover of the F# i've seen but great job reaching the F#...it's not an easy task to accomplish

  • congrats on hitting an F# hehe

  • you hit the note nicely but the buildup was bad

  • yeah, the beginning was not that clear but the f# was brilliant !

  • Wtf my ears . I will slit ur throat.

  • @yzdit

    Party pooper!

  • Very good.

  • LOL

  • Holy shit, my life record was only A#.

  • The beginning sucked, but the F# was pretty good.

  • nice, you sound a bit like early DT vocalist Chris Collins actually. Listen to The Majesty Demos.

  • the last note rocked, just the first couple were a tad strange haha.....up n down

  • everything, sucked, except the F#5

  • at first i was thinking "oh god this isn't gonna be good" but then at end, it was damned good. nice job.

  • Comment removed

  • Very nice!

  • O.O Compliments! XD

  • not bad at all, just need to control your voice more. It sounded funny before the high F#

  • yeah i noticed the breathe was broken up more than it shouldve been. but def nailed the F#

  • not bad

  • quality sucks, but the scream is pretty cool :-))

  • Man, this is awesome! It doesn't sound funny, if you played that with a band it would sound just like the original. Great job again!

  • I don't know how it works.. I can't do it yet.. the second part I get but to this f# .. I can't get this step higher..

  • Visualize, my friend...the voice is like a triangle, it gets thinner towards the top. Think low on high notes and low on high notes

  • What a load of old SHIT!!

  • I'm always glad when someone weighs in with an honest opinion!

  • XD nice falsetto, very funny =P

  • it's not falsetto, but i'm glad it made you laugh.

  • @Zapriz8081 How could you think this was falsetto?

  • @Zapriz8081 its not falsetto... it's his head voice! you have to learn the diffrens before comment please.

  • lol you did it. but it sounded freakin hilarious.

  • I don't get why this guy's getting so much crap for this video, the whole thing sounds damn awesome to me.

  • Pretty good!! =) i couldnt do that if i tried...

  • mariah

  • hahahahaha

  • I have to agree with MikePortnoyz!

  • How many pro's use a mobile phone to record? give him an sm58 mic, subtle delay and compression and a day to record and then comment. He isn't claiming to be the god of metal, but sounds like he is on his way.

  • Yep... and the F# seems right, all the rest not XD

  • xD muahahahahah, you're so right.

  • Now try his G#5 on Octavarium Score!!

  • That's just screaming though, isn't it?

I mean, if James couldn't sing an F# so well when he recorded Octavarium but could scream a G#, then shouldn't someon who can hit that same F# singing have little problem with screaming a whole tone higher?

  • No. His voice is raspy, crispy per sey. I still can't [what YOU could call "scream"] the g# on Octavarium.

  • I have no doubt you are telling the truth when you say you can't do it............

I don't know the part you're talking about but I'm guessing it's "trapped inside this octavarium"

and that's easier to do that to hold a sung note like the F#, and that is demonstrated by the fact that it is on octavarium which was after his vocal accident that made him much less able to hit F# like he does on Images and Words.

  • .. Okay. It's still hard. I don't know what your trying to prove.

  • Yes, both are difficult. What I'm trying to prove (and I'm not trying to be a jerk, just point something out) is that it's easier (though still hard) to scream a G than it is to sing an F#. Yeah one's higher but it takes a lot more control to sing.

I'm sorry if I seemed like a jerk. I wasn't trying to be one.

  • Okay. You weren't really, just mainly that you were making random arguments.

    :/

Peace though. Did you know that you have the same first name as me? as off topic as it may sound.

  • AWESOME

  • nice but carefull doing that note too often can really hurt your voice

  • hey great job men

  • Nice strong f-sharp, but I'd like to hear a little less rasp. Can you try for a more pure sound? But you did good, dude.

  • wow! u sure ure not James LaBrie? XD? u ust need more practice but ure tones r ok ;)

  • Ignore the stupid comments, that was really good, id never be able to do that ever without sounding terrible.

  • a little flat i think but awesome

  • He's just showing the note he's hit, he's not actually singing.

  • I think its a demonstration of range. Not tone

  • the F# itself actually sounded better than all of those other notes you hit lol nice

  • Well that wasnt too bad

  • Work more on tone and less on range. Also, do this with the notes connected. Stop separating all of them. You sound worse than modern day labrie on this.

  • you hit the f sharp

    but you fucking suck otherwise

  • Regardless of the theory of developing vocals...yours are not very good.

  • you suck

  • yeah too bad you're ten fucking times worse asshole. you should make sure all your videos aren't garbage and have an average of two fucking stars before you run your mouth.

  • Yeah as a singer you really shouldn't say things like that to fellow musicians.

  • i came

  • Have just have to ask...Since you can now sing this high and have trained your voice.Has this changed your talkingvoice?? Like its softer and doesnt crack as easely if you shout at someone or laught?? Please answer, im really wondering.

  • A good question - my speaking voice is pretty much the same, but I'm more aware of it if that makes sense. Yes, it doesn't crack as easily - and the kind of diaphragm support used in singing can be put to use in speaking as well, useful if you're making a speech or presentation.

  • ayear ago i used to be able to sing along to judas priest no probs, then my balls dropped, i cant hit high notes anymore, is it possible to train yer voice to hit extremely high notes?

  • Yeah it can be done, infact nearly all high singers in metal did alot of practice, trial and error to develop the high register. Hitting high notes isn't about forcing and forcing your vocal chords up to the note, you sort of have to take the 'weight' off your voice. To sing better highs, you don't sing from the same place you speak from if that makes sense?

  • yeah i get whhat you mean, im practising everyday!

  • very shaky lows and connectors. Great high! ;)

  • LOL

  • Falsetto and Head vocie are one in the same. He uses a mixed voice. The guy who covered this sounded like it was full chest voice up until the last part, but it could very well be a well developed mixed voice. The delivery on the lower ones were a bit wierd.

  • There was no full chest voice in this, above E4/F4 the mix voice starts, and the higher one gets from there, the more head tends to come into the mix. This video is all mix voice, you can hear that as I go up the phrase there's less and less chest in the mix, until the climactic high note is pretty much pure head (chesty highs hurt!)

  • I can comfortably sing an A chest voice, although in non operatic situations I tend to sing mixed anywhere above a D.

  • Really good high notes, kind of weird on the low ones, the notes were good but you went WAH too much.

  • Shit son. 8D

  • Sounded like falsetto to me....James uses headvoice here, thats why this is so awesome. In falsetto, I think many normalskilled singers can get up there. You got it, just need A HECK of more practice. Maybe ask James himself on his site forum. (witch he NEVER vists for answers from fans.=)

  • Trust me, it's head. I can't do falsetto!

  • Ok. Are you sure? Thats pretty skilled. But why do you can´t do falsetto? Ps. Are James himself using falsetto these days???

  • I can do falsetto, I just can't do it properly, I can't project or support it. As far as I can tell most people actually find it harder to sing metal high notes in falsetto. And I'm pretty sure James doesn't use falsetto these days except for effect, his high singing is still head/mixed voice.

  • Axisundone you are correct that was head voice and you are also correct in that James only uses falsetto for effect that being said i never heard him use falsetto

  • As far as I know, James has only sung falsetto in Through Her Eyes and Panic Attack. His most known high notes, such as the E5s in Under A Glass Moon, the F5 in Innocence Faded, and the famous F#5 in Learning To Live are all head/mix voice. There are falsetto backing harmonies in Prophets Of War, but that is Mike Portnoy!

  • Also parts of the verse of 'Forsaken' SOUND like falsetto, buts its actually soft head voice - which is a skill in itself!

  • precisely what i'm talking about, I would have to listen to Through her eyes again but I think it's just a soft head voice. I myself can produce a soft falsetto like head voice.

  • Comment removed

  • he also uses this tone in Goodnight Kiss I'm pretty sure.

  • that was really really shakey. I'm no singer, but that wasn't as good as you think.

  • I never claimed it was good, just having a go at emulating one of my vocal heroes. I do intend to post a better version at some point as I've learned a few things and refined my technique since the time I recorded this video.

  • So sorry, I didn't realize you had your period.

  • AlexMitti, go away ya fuckin troll. He was aiming to hit F#, and did. Because he hasn't been formally trained for years prior to making this video is irrelevant. But not as nearly as irrelevant as your existence is on this planet.

  • everything was crap except the f# :P

  • As much as you spam other DT videos, this wasn't that good at all.

  • honestly..i found it very good your pitch is almost perfect, but there is something else... your notes a great its juste the pattern you use, dont do such vibrato to your voice when climbimg the notes and let your abdominal system do the job. you could get alot for powerful. Keep the note when you get high cause when you sing the same note you use alo of vibrato and there is some palces the note changes. But your pitches are near perfect its a great attempt

  • Try to improve your technique. That was bad, man. Try to use chest support. What you did was just screaming, and it's not good for your voice.

  • Thanks for constructive criticism, since the time of this video I have worked on my technique and have better breath control, diaphragm use and chest connection. Might post a new take on this same passage...

  • continue tentando! quem sabe um dia chegue lá!!

    parabens

    DREAM THEATER RULES

  • Dug it! Very nice. You're making me think about posting a high note vid , myself. :)

  • Go for it man! We YouTube vocal enthusiasts always welcome an addition to our number.

  • You suck

  • Haha

  • nice pipes man.

  • Nice, but try to work on that last note.

  • the last note was great, it was kinda shaky getting there but very good. much better than i ever could have done lol

  • well done, i can just about hit this note, but i'm certainly not a good singer...

  • ROFL. High Gb aka F sharp is a real screamer. That is why I bought a Suzuki Promaster Valved all metal harp to honk on in this key. It makes for real pretty sounding harmony. I prefer it for Taps and Amazing Grace to be played at funerals. The breath saving valve assisted bends keep it real interesting. I will be sending you the bill for the glasses you broke with this video, lol...

  • 3/5

  • i could maybe hit that note on crack and reefer at the same time. nice job!

  • excelletn stuff!! and this time no distortion due to poor recording devices. a very clean note also.

  • Thanks! I actually used my phone, just like the old videos, but this time put it further away in the room, which seems to have erased the distortion problem.

  • Yo jowox, you verified that Rhapsody note as F#6? Shame on you! It's in the fifth octave dude!

  • HOLY SHIT, it's NOT! Fucking listen to it!! LISTEN TO IT, it's really goddamned obvious.

    watch?v=CRq9hH2YgEE

    0:50

    F#6!!

  • I'd have to say its in the 5th octave. Sorry!

  • great job with your conclusion axis, it only took you two weeks to look into the buzz going on on your videos, lol. Don't worry, the clutter may suck, but the views and comments bump it up on the search list, so it pays off!

Haha, take it from the drama pro, lol.

  • Cool, now take the F#5 up one MORE octave!

    watch?v=CRq9hH2YgEE

    0:50

    F#6!!!

  • Check out YouTube user unflexablegrace and his soprano E video for a man hitting F6 in mixed voice...

  • That video is F#5, by the way.

  • Listen to it again.

    PS: Jowox has verified F#6.

  • The note at 50 seconds i an F#5. The same note as this one.

  • Yeah, it isn't a F#6... lol

  • lol, whoever thumbs downed this comment is a moron, learn your octaves. The note in that rhapsody song is F#5. Don't be retarded, lol.

Sorry for cluttering your vid axis! It's al;l for good publicity I swear! lol

  • I remember a rhapsody note a while ago that someone said was a F#6 but it was clearly a F#5 with some overtones.

  • It's clearly the same guy. He's STILL arguing saying that it's an F#6 lol. set him straight all knowing vocal guru!

  • It's too bad my old account got shut down for copyright infringement; I had an email from Jowox verifying F#6 "in head voice!!"

No idea why he's changed his tune all of a sudden.

  • Damn, they shut it down for copyright? I had 3 videos removed for it, but they didn't even notify me, just pulled them, that's nuts.

  • I had about 5 from an esoteric 90s Japanese ska band, Kemuri. Rare vids not posted on youtube-- figured I was doing a service (20,000+ views on each). I also had one from Catch 22 (American ska), two from Home Grown (Japanese reggae, one with 200,000 views) & two Hawaiian pop. The former band's reps sent me a copyright claim (they'd post ads on my site), but my account was already suspended.

I'm thinking about posting them all on badongo for download-- payback for the inconvenience.

  • either way though, that's bullshit, they shouldn't suspend accounts for that bullshit, you were just making it accessible for fans of the music, nothing worth suspending accounts.

  • PS: I'm not making those numbers up. Google "youtube zaakuru" & check the cache.

  • Hey I know zaakuru, kinda, he has a bunch of videos posted from like the 90's and shit, right?

  • Nice f#, dude.

  • Thanks very much, coming from someone as vocally accomplished as you that means alot!

  • Woah, I'm impressed. Good job man. Thanks for the comment on my Mike Portnoy Learning to live vid. Keep up the good work.

  • Holy shit on a stick, awesome man!

  • Sounds great

  • Woah balls or life as a megastar? Perfect example to help you decide...

  • What on earth are you on about Alex :D
