  • I often used to hum the tune from this when I was at school, under the mistaken (?) impression that I'd made it up. However, having researched it , I'm now confused as I left school in 1974 and apparently it was written in 1984. Explanations gratefully received

  • @likefoster36 Follow in Sutton Foster's footsteps??? What are you on? Ms. Peters is a legend, while SUTTON FOSTER IS THE MOST OVERRATED THEATER PERFORMER IN THE WORLD!

  • @likefoster36 Let's see: likefoster36, walt1896, Walt1896TheCloner, lmajoy94, RadiationViolet, mmbr01rrf, SFMusicals1...SFMusicals100, etc. Wow, with your 200+ Youtube accounts trolling videos, worshipping Sutton Foster, criticizing others, and marking as "spam" any comment not favoring Sutton Foster on her videos, you obviously have no life -- and no job. Your overrated idol must be so appreciative of your loyalty, lol!

  • i love how she can belt then go right into a loud operatic soprano note, she is fuckin bosss!!!!

  • I'm sure this has already been stated but I don't feel like going through all the pages of comments to see if I'm being redundant.. :)

This is from the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical "Song & Dance".

This performance is from a tribute concert to famed Producer Cameron McIntosh called "Hey Mr. Producer". The CDs are recorded in a pretty poor quality (it was live, after all) but it is a fun collection of the top hits from many of Cameron's shows.

  • @NLaBruiser Its from Lloyd Webber's production of 'Tell me on a Sunday'

  • @Trl1824u it's in the key of D I believe...

  • BRAVO !!!!

  • oh my fucking god she sings this better now then when she did it in the80s!!!!:) amazing!

  • NO ONE CAN SING THIS SONG LIKE HER!!!!!!

  • Cinderella´s evil step mother! She sings so great.

  • the swinging the arms nd stuff helps me to get the big notes out, it loosens me up :) maybe thats wat she is doing?

  • WHY DOESN'T SHE AGE?? Seriously, you see pictures of her today and she is still as fabulous as ever!

She is so fantastic- what an amazing voice.

  • I'm having my angel type this for me cause I just died after watching this wonderful.... beautiful...mindblowing....women <333 i wanna cry at how i wasnt born when she was out & how i cant see her until she comes out again :,[ my friends proabably think im weird for listening to this cause im only 13.

  • i don't know what all the fuss is about to be honest...

yes, i understand that her voice is good, but i don't think she has the best tone for this song. have you hear denise van outen's version?! mind blowing.

  • @katherinedodds you`re a party pooper.

  • OH MY GOSH! I LOVE THIS WOMAN'S VOICE! To the practice room it is!

  • I love Bernadette Peters! She is perfect in every way. I love singing along with her and if I really push myself I can reach that last note with her... and I'm a guy! Bernadette makes magic happen <3

  • I JUST DIED.

  • this is musical theatre at its best, connected, great storytelling, she is a force of nature.so free a out of body experience. rare.

  • this is musical theatreat its best, connected, great storytelling, she is a force of nature.

  • Holy Shit. I'm "lost for words"

  • The last 20 seconds of the song gave me major goose bumps :D her voice is addicting. :3

  • Hey Asis! She did it on purpose. She was slowly and then she was faster to be right in the time again. It was her interpretation from this song. Its not the exactly music form, but she does that as to kind of "play" with the music. I don´t believe it would be a mistake. Kisses!

  • am i the only one that turns into a total dork when she falls in love? :P I spin around belting this at the top of my lungs at midnight >.>

  • the witch from Odyessey

  • Absolutely divine. No one makes this song work like she does! <3

  • i love bernadette peters. shes got some real talent. wow...

  • I had never heard this song until just now, and I just watched this video four times in a row. I love it. Her voice is gorgeous.

  • She is so much better then Sarah in this role. I wish she was in the movie.

  • @nestersg but sarahs was the voice that moved andrew the most. she fit his vision. if only she could act>.>

  • @RaWrZzZz

But the whole work seems like it was written for a Mezzo Soprano. And I'm never going to be convinced it was Sarah's voice Anderew liked.

  • @nestersg xD burnn! lol i much prefer bernadette, who sings the role so strongly. but andrew did love sarahs voice. and she had the range, so as impractical as it seems to us, it must've been perfect to him. he worked her like a slave horse though. poor thing had a couple breakdowns during phantom.

  • @RaWrZzZz

A soprano would have the range for this musical, but the music sits in a place that is better sounding in a Mezzo'a voice, just as a Mezzo soprano could sing O Mio Babbino Caro, but it sounds better in a soprano's voice. And I still think Lloyd Webber was blinded by love, he did, after all, put her in his Requiem, and Sarah does not have the right kind of voice for that. I will agree that she did have the perfect voice for Jeminia in Cats..

  • @nestersg mostly agreed. i still think he was nuts about her voice. wrote an entire musical for her, based around her range. poor thing though. apparently he was really sweet when they weren't working, but when they were working together he was supposed to be so hard on her

  • @RaWrZzZz

He seemed to be a real jerk to all the Christine's. That's why Rebecca went to Le Miz. I don't think at the time she was ready to sing the phantom, so she needed some quick hard training. And just because Andrew Lloyd Webber likes someone's voice doesn't mean I have to. I could smack him over the head for putting Madonna in Evita! I don't hate Sarah's voice, I think it's pretty but a bit boring. As Mel Brooks said: It's nice, isn't thrilling, but nice.

  • @nestersg I thought Madonna's voice was decent, if not particularly outstanding. I do agree with your opinion on Sarah Brightman's voice, though. She has a nice voice, controlled, but it's nothing you'd really remember.

  • @Felicity1247 Yeah. I disagree. Sarah Brightman is AMAZING, and quite frankly I thought think Bernadette Peters isn't all that great... that's just my opinion though. (:

  • @RaWrZzZz

I don't mean to ramble, but it's nice talking to a person who is obviously educated about music.

  • @nestersg x3 heehee its been my life pretty much :D i'm a soprano, still training but i've been training professionally for a year or two, and practicing all my life.

  • Bravo! Bravo!

    :)

  • <3 AMAZING :)

    She is my idol.

  • She is totally amazing! I'm in love with this song, and her voice <3

  • I heard Susan Akers perform this beautiful emotional song at Wolftrap years ago....thank you BP for your marvelous rendition...plus I've always loved you

  • best best best BEST version there is out there. Bernadette is unbeatable.

  • She is the best singer for this. SUCH A TALENT

  • First show I ever saw on Broadway, Bernadette was so wonderful.

  • my new favorite song!

  • Brava, Bernadette!

  • omg i googled this in love with the song sing it for a class i do

  • if you've never been in real love you can't understand her movements... i can't explain them but I understand them

  • agreed.

  • This is, by far, my favorite ALW song.

  • She tends to open her arms when she is showing vulnerability, and swings when she is showing happiness. She's Bernadette fucking Peters and she can do what she wants =P

  • this is bernadette peters...not sarah brightman

  • What musical is this from Does anyone know?

  • Song and Dance

    :)

  • This song originates from the UK TV show 'Tell me on a Sunday'. Which morphed into 'Song and Dance' on stage. Listen also to 'Take that look off your face' from the same show.

  • IIRC, Tell Me On a Sunday did not include this song, because the London version of Song and Dance didn't. Please do correct me if I am wrong!

I do know that it was added into the Broadway version of Song and Dance (along with revisions to the plot) following Second Letter Home.

  • @Shanoply It's From 'Tell Me On a Sunday' :).

  • Love her. :)

  • uhg...

this song is way to perfect :'(

  • bernadette you are the best

  • i love this song!

  • Hahaha Emily Rossum is an actress hahah she´s not even a singer, no expression what so ever, the dullest performance in the history of acting, and on top of it all, the voice: sound correcting program product. Just watch her singing live... ypu´ll know what I mean

  • .........WTF?

  • what a strange accent...can she really sing??

  • sorry i was drunk...how to delete a message?

  • Gotta love the arms :)

  • sorry mate. she didnt get 'crazy' at all. it was the software decoder i used in converting my dvd to the avi file. wrong settings i guess :)

  • Oh, in that case, nice version :))

  • @leonil7 do you have this in dvd?

  • The BEST "Unexpected Song" EVER!!!!; Bernadette Rocks!!!

  • Bernadette brings so much intensity to this song...it feels 100% real. She knows exactly how to phrase things and make her actions fit perfectly. Incredible performance, as usual.

  • Emmy Rossum's voice wasn't underdeveloped for christine. She is an opera singer. She was asked to play christine after she had stoped singing for 4 years.

  • yes, her voice fits for the movie. but she can't pass for a broadway christine daae. she has still much to go. she's still young though. she has great years ahead of her, to be sure.

  • oh, i was referring to emmy rossum and BJTDancer's comment.

  • I just love Bernadette.

  • The point is that Bernadette's version feels the most heartfelt. It's real, and that makes it interesting. As opposed to say, Sarah Brightman, who sings like she's just happy to be working.

  • I just saw the Brightman version & I have to agree with what you just said. Brightman took a pretty song & did absolutely nothing with it other than sing it "pretty", there wasn't even an attempt at conveying emotion, Bernadette conveys more emotions in her eyes alone than Brightman conveyed in her entire body. This is a fantastic performance & proves that without the right performer a pretty song goes absolutely nowhere.

  • Peters makes an unotherwise boring and uninteresting song come alive with her energy. Kudos to her.

  • what is this song from?

  • Song and Dance (the musical) my Andrew Lloyd Webber

  • @spizzell1 It's From The Musical 'Tell Me On a Sunday' :).

  • how absolutely breathtaking! Bernadette does it better than anyone.

  • This is the only version on Youtube worth a damn.. She's is amazing.. That only we are hearing!

  • sO AM I =) GOOD LUCK

  • i'm singing this for a solo and ensemble contest!!!

  • Good Luck! It's a great song! My fav performance of this is by Michael Crawford. Look it up.

  • thanx!!!

  • wow in my club they are teaching me to sing this!

  • i <3 this song...

i heard it in mr. producer.

    it's soo good...

  • if you're curious of hearing a duet version of the song, just look up:

Jose Mari Chan & Sheryn Regis - Unexpected Song

:)or just look it up on my channel.

i think the duet is beautiful as well!

  • This is my favourite song, her version of it. It is mine and my fiance's 'song' and we are having this as our first dance. Thanks for posting, makes me smile every time I hear it, sums up exactly how I felt meeting my now fiance:) Isnt first love great haha

  • i think this is the best performance i have ever seen of this song!!! bernadette peters is AMAZING!

  • i had t sing this in school for a preformance by myself, it was hard but she makes it look so easy!

  • She sounds like me when I have a stuffy nose...haha I'm sorry Bernadette, I just don't care for this rendition.

  • what musical is this from?

  • Song & Dance

  • @hununuisnoob It's From The Musical 'Tell Me On a Sunday' :).

  • I like her energy, but I don't like how she doesn't sing it according to tempo: sometimes the background music clashes awkwardly with her voice. It must have driven the orchestra conductor crazy.

  • i agree.

  • this is a great performance of the song. It's actually the only one on YouTube I've found and actually enjoyed.

  • well then you haven't seen sarah brightman's then

  • I don't find hers even close to Bernadette Peter's. I don't know why...I just don't like Sarah Brightman.

  • not to make you mad but i probably will by saying this. if you don't like Sarah Brightman then you most likely have no taste in music at all.

  • I'm not mad, I just think that you may be a little biased. after all, you do have "phantom fan" in your name. I don't think she's horrible, I just think that other people are better.

  • I didn't know what the phantom of the opera was til they came out with the movie in 05. and I found out about sarah through a friend that wanted me to hear time to say goodbye. so phantom has nothing to do with me liking sarah. Time to say goodbye does. But yes i do admit that i love sarahs phantom of the opera as well. but phantom is not the reason of me liking sarah at all. Her voice is just better and it is a fact other wise she wouldnt' be the Top selling soprano of all time.

  • Shes not the top selling thats just a general term some say she is and some say there are others who have sold more htan her. I like her in some stuff but Bernadette OWNS this song.

  • Sarah Brightman was and has always been too old to play Christine. Her voice is perfect though.

  • i've never really liked sarah as christine. her voice hasn't got the power or feeling.

    I perfer Emmy.

  • I have to disagree. I'm not a Brightman fanatic, but Emmy Rossum's voice was far too underdeveloped for the role; yes, it had 'feeling', but the musical quality was poor. In order to have a truely good performance, technical singing and feeling/acting have to be balanced.

  • Agreed but Emmy Rossum is a far better actress as a 16 year old than Sarah Brightman will ever be. Brightman has had several decades to perfect that craft & she still hasn;t been able to. She can't act & no matter how technically better her vocals are, her performances are a bore to those who are not Brightman fans. Even those who hated the movie had positive things to say about 16 year old Emmy. Brightman's Christine was never critically acclaimed. Despite her voice she is a terrible performer.

  • @EnzFab73

Well said. Her voice is just like Christine's in the book, technically perfect, but no passion.

  • @nestersg no thats when christine was an understudy for carlotta. Erik brought out her passion and thats when her talent manifested itself.

  • She was 26 when she opened as Christine. How is that too old? Just wondering. I would agree that she was too old when the movie came out, if that's what you meant.

  • I love Bernadette, I love this song, and she is so technically perfect - but is anyone else...distracted by the vowel pronouciation or is it just be being picky?

  • i like this version a lot actually i guess cause I don't sing low like she does through out it is why i don't like it as much as as I like sarah's but Bernadette has always been an amazing singer :D

  • like bernadette but sarah brightman's version is better for sure

  • Excellent, absolutely amazing... Love her voice!

  • i do not like her dress though, it is not flattering

  • this is so pretty, im thinking of doing it for a talent show

  • i love this performance. this is what real singing is!

  • Amazing, she's amazing. x

  • great rendetion!!!!

  • She can hit those notes brilliantly. I love it.

  • Bernadette is a great actress...but I do prefer Melissa Manchester's version of this song from the touring production of Song Dance. The way Melissa belts it out at the end can not be beat!

  • That's because she sings it in a much lower key(not the original D-major. A lot easier to belt out as women then...Melissa still does a great job though!

  • It's not that much lower. She sings this in D Flat Major, which is only a semi-tone down.

  • she is the best one to sing this song.

  • Bloody phenominal.. I was there and her voice just reverberates through you!

  • Absoultely brilliant!

  • i love the bit just before that... she's writing a letter to her mum about he new boyfriend and goes a bit deep in detail, that's what she's rubbing out. i've got the tape with this performance on 'Hey Mr. Producer' Cameron Mackintosh

  • This is an achingly gorgeous song. Love it and thanks for posting.

  • No, Bernadette Peters is not British, but the character who sings this song is from England, which is why she's singing it in a British accent.

  • is she british? pardon my ignorance.

  • love this song, i sing/hum/whistle it all the time

  • i think she'd be amazing singing 'on my own' from les miserables

  • It's a little choppier than I like, but very pretty. And in the same key I sing it in. Not like the crazy high version Sarah Brightman sings. Which is very pretty but... makes me feel like a huge failure. Not that this doesn't. What a belt Brenadette has. Amazing, as always.

  • thank you so much for posting this video! i've been looking for this for a while now. great job! wish the part where she was writing to "dear mum" at the start was included though. :-)

  • Bernadette is absolutely amazing. Hands down.

  • Like Bernadette and not a bad version either of this song. My favorite has to be Michael Crawfords though. Heard it on his Songs From The Stage And Screen. Flows better then this and has better control over all without losing the passion. Listen to both versions like I did before judging. Respect both artists very much though. Wish I could see the two of them live together just once.

  • she sang this at the andrew lloyd webber tribute :-)

  • i thought this was that celerbration 4 thatproducer guy makintosh and thats y it was called hey mr producer

  • oh yeah, you're right! haha. sorry, my bad. ;-p

  • where is she singing this?

  • I love her, all her vowels are so wrong, yet so right lol

  • haha - I just posted a comment about that, because I couldn't see anyone who agreed with me! But yes I agree :)

  • This is brilliant. I love it more than the soprano versions. It's awesome. Pity this is missing the first bit where she's writing the letter...

  • well, nice vid, it's like a proof that sound goes faster than light^^

  • were did the other version of this from the lovely bernadette go? im really upset! txs 4 this i luv this song!

  • the video is off sync

  • i wish i was a tenor.

then i could sing along with that last note. mmm

    beautiful.

    -jacob
