When he says "I'm your hate when you want love", I think that he means when love has turned its back on people, they feel hate towards others and themselves, and the only way to feel good again or feel "love" again is to pay (the fare) for whatever can do that, be it booze, drugs, or something that takes the ugly feeling away. In the end, it was "nothing", because once the "high" wears off, that same ugly feeling still remains.
