i love the U.S.A. but i would change a lot of the things like 4 1 thing the government, jobs, all this money that we r spending on stuff the US dont even need
@xfightx11 that kind of talk is what leads us to wars. It is true we were attacked by another country, but stereo-typing some one by calling them a 'towel head' is why people think we, Americans, are shallow, spoiled rich, brats, people have a right to dislike or like a song or do what ever, but throwing racist slang like that isn't right.
america is the greatest country that ever existed. i base that on the weapons america has, which in the end is all that really matters. you liberal fag pussies will never understand that.
@MrAldrenn Greatest country my ass. It took them until 1942 to start helping the Allies against Germany, then they decide to make a boast about nukes until the Russians planted one in Cuba then you started going for peace only when they were about to be destroyed. Then they go and TRY to settle Vietnam and FAIL. The British has the best army in the world. Navy and Air Force as well as the SAS. So no America is not the best country ever. Just to point out I do like the song, just not the comments
@managermaniac There is no such thing as the "greatest country on earth" - surely you don't believe its Britain.. because that's a joke.
If you do think it is then I suggest you look up what happened in India/Africa or basically anywhere the UK colonized - even the UK is a joke itself, because England was exploiting Scotland/Ireland long before it ever moved to anywhere else.
@ACItalian LOL Who cares? America sucks anyway. The majority of the people are fucking stupid, the economy is shit, the government continues to strip the people of their rights and they impose their values on every other country. Fuck America. And this is coming from an American. Even though I don't agree with every aspect of these cultures, I'd much rather be from Sweden or Canada.
I'm not from the USA but if America didn't exist my life would be a hell of a lot diffident in a extremely negative way. Bruce Springsteen is awesome great song
i never heard this song till today and i didnt really hear him right but now damn the public should be against war but they should respect to the men and women who risked their lives for our protection.
Even though I consider myself conservative and Bruce Springsteen is a liberal. I'd have to agree with him on this point. I'm 15 but from what ive been told from my dad and someone else I know the public treated the U.S. troops horribly when they came home. I say if America would of had the same patriotism that it had during WWII America would of won Vietnam.
@crow666ification You idiot! He is singing about how he had a rough life as a child... then he gets mixed in with the wrong crowd and is given a option join the army or go to prison... he chooses the army and he is sent to Vietnam... where his brother dies and they lose the war... he comes home to find out he no longer has a job at the refinery and the V.A. fucks him over... then he sings about how he left his child and has no where to go and no future! You sir obviously didn't read the lyrics!
@crow666ification Reading in-between the lines??? Not everything is a fucking indirect message! Sometimes thing are what they LOOK like! Its easy to express your familys or your countrys ethics and morals is it not?? But dont you dare question mine!
@TheGefro LOL! Very funny. From a stupid wetback who cant even speak English. People like him wouldn't know freedom and liberty if it bit them in the ass. And it's all because we have to fight to stay free, it wont be handed to any of us.
also VA is the Dept. of Veterans Affairs. VA man is the VA rep that "helps" put your packet together. they dont give you much time to give them evidence and if you wait to long your done.
@RAYSONIC511 I hate to do this, but isnt the combat mission ending soon? Aside from that, I owe you so much respect, to do something most of us wouldn't dare do. To leave your home and your family, fight for everyone and everything that matters. Much respect from Canada !!! :)
@ElEctroniczCoRner Actually, we have a high anorexia rate, half of us HATE McDonalds and we are home to some of the top colleges/universities in the world.
@MIKAFAN41 yah but look at the charts highest obesity rate in the world and you guys suck ass at most sports and canada made all your sports lol. your government pulled the world down in economy and
@ElEctroniczCoRner No, actually an island in Polynesia does, I don't watch American sports, AND I hate our government, like 75% of American citizens. Don't blame the people for what idiots did, k?
This kind of indiscriminately undiscerning simplistic simpleton mindset in deed backfires on the safety of many Americans, as this type of crude & unsophisticated mentality sees the world only in black & white, my way or the high way, or us vs them (where there's no ground for friends), and can't even distinguish between civilians and hostile forces. It will inevitably make Americans in the overseas fall out of favor with the locals to their own detriment.
A question that has lingered for a long time in my mind: How can such racist and hatred expression like "kill yellow man" be still accepted in the lyrics? Does he condone indiscriminately antagonizing the entire Asian people by using such an uneducated hill-billy redneck lingo? Or was it just an oversight? Or mere realism in directly adopting the coarse military vernacular of the 70's era? If it was meant to mean Vietcong, then the lyrics must be modified to refer correctly to the Vietcong only.
He is talking about (Singing) About the Vietnam war when in America if you were convicted of a crime you could choose to Ether Go to Prison or fight in the War.

Look up "Goodnight Saigon," by Billy Joel. It also depicts the raw truth about fighting in Vietnam with out crapping on the flag. Yes, Vietnam Vets got screwed, it was a dark time for America. Beauracracy and money hungry politicians screw our soldiers every year!! Yet lucky for us, they still sign up to protect our sorry asses. What about the freakin hippies who instead of welcoming them back spit on them and turned them out. .
I was a fan since i was 12 and heard this the first time. Never was I in love with USA and everything I thought it stood for at the time. Keep in mind this was 25 years ago. I'm still a fan of Bruce. No other writer or musician or artist have got me so connected as his songs... And it seems that I am living the life that he sings about in so many songs... The River Born in the USA Dancing in the Dark Hungry Heart Leap of Faith Brilliant Disguise Ghost of Tom Joad....
I love it when a bunch of patriotic assholes praise this song simply because it has 'USA' in it. The only song of his that criticizes America more than this one was 'Part man part monkey'.
First time I have seen the lyrics.....America use to be about helping and being kind to everyone....Now days it seems like, how hard can I fuck anyone for a buck.......
@brownfm19 sorry. just pissed at the amount of people who bring up like that kind of shit in a video thats like i dont know about puppies. it just gets old. sorry i didnt mean to spazz out man. sorry
In1985 I was at a job interview on Wall Street when they finally decided to give the Vietnam Vet a ticker tape parade, 10 -15 years too late, They were a rag tag bunch of men, who started sponteously singing this song, which really brought the meaning of this song home, whenever I hear this song I think of them. Ironically Reagan used it as a campaign song, which said how out of touch he was.
I have to sing this song in front of my english class because we're reading a book called Don't Stop The Sun. It's about someone with posttramatic stress disorder from Vietnam.
@Mink70 He talked with some Vietnam vets about what happened to them and their fellow soldiers, so the song is an amalgam of true stories. Bruce wanted to tell their story, which the public was trying not to hear. Unfortunately a lot of people just listened to the chorus and the melody and ignored the meaning of the lyrics, and that's why Reagan used it as a campaign song. Bruce is patriotic, but he doesn't love what Americans are often subjected to. That's what the song is about.
@SammyBerg I totally agree. I always thought Born In The USA was a patriotic song, in a different way.
It's difficult to explain :/ Maybe this is the best way: which is the more patriotic statement; "America is great, nothing is wrong, I'm American and proud" or "I've been forgotten, nobody recognises what I've been through, people I've known all my life have turned against me...but I'm American and proud, and that means I'm going to do everything I can to survive"? Which one describes BITUSA?
@SammyBerg this song is an anti-american song, the song is making fun of america during the vietnam war saying that america was trying to bully them and etc... and people like BRUCE and JANE FONDA supported the viet cong. and thats why they should be exiled from america, because theyre dirtbags and terrible human scum
@2013greenwave youre wrong buddy, they didnt support the viet-cong you have no idea what you are talking about. Its not anti-American its a few spots in a few memories that are put together from soldiers in the vietnam era.
@MrRetiredusarmy R U REALLY GONNA SAY THAT JANE FONDA DID NOT SUPPORT THE VIET CONG, she took pics smiling like a **** and she kept trying to help them as much as she could. This is an antiamerican song, u can look up any kind of countdown or music website etc... and they all say that this was a song to protest america during the vietnam war. People like FOnda spit of the soldiers when they returned home and treated them like garbage all thanks to our WONDERFUL (sarcasm) president John F KennedY
@2013greenwave i didnt say anything of fonda but bruce didnt you have no idea son. you can look up your websites but if you had any common sense youd understand. people these days are a bunch of followers thank you for being one of them.
@SammyBerg Until 6 months ago, I was one of those people. Of course, I was also 4 when the album came out, so that probably had something to do with it. I had heard it all my life, but never really listened. I'm glad I finally did!
@SammyBerg from what ive heard from my teacher and my dad and my therapist, the public was not treating the u.s. soldiers with any respect. Well i say the public was bullshit. even though the public was against war they still should of honored the soldiers who risked their lives to fight for their country.
I always thought this is just another "we are the best country in the world" song... but now, after I read the lyrics I realize how sad it is... great, thanks for sharing

@InternalCombstion420 that's because he is pointing out the ways the USA is not good enough. What he says is perfectly true.

2013greenwave 9 months ago

Some of the best opening lyrics I've ever heard...
"Born down in a dead man's town; the first kick I took was when I hit the ground"

I always thought this is just another "we are the best country in the world" song... but now, after I read the lyrics I realize how sad it is... great, thanks for sharing
