However, it was far more useful as the basis for the StuGIII- the most susccessful armored vehicle of ww2 with well over 20000+ enemy tanks killed. It certainly proved most adept in that role. However until the advent of the sherman (grant too, maybe) in the desert, the PIII was superior to any british tank in theater.

well for pre ww2 strategic theory the Panzer III was a solid concept. Allready in France it showed itsself inferior to the newer British and French Tanks. But due to better tactical use of tanks by the German army nobody realy noticed it. So the Germans went with the weak 37mm KwK to Russia. Would have went different if it would have been equiped with the long 50mm L60 KwK when the T34's first time appeared on the eastern Front. But with the door knocker they were just useless against them...
Its these early inglorious machines that were fighting the decisive battles early in the war, yet oddly despite their huge importance to history, society has largely forgotten them. Ask a dude that knows a little about ww2 what a tiger was and he will know what your talking about. Ask him what a panzer 3 was and your gonna get a blank stare.

The 2 way radio and the big turret were a good edge, bat at the same time it was seriously outgunned and underarmored compared to the Matilda II's or Char B's it was pitted against in the Battle of France. The Germans won tanks to superior doctrine and strategy, despite having inferior tanks.

@EnhancedNightmare they were inferior on the paper. Panzer were the first medium tank with 5 men crew and 3 in the turret, a cupola for the leader, an internal speaker system and a radio. It's a real and big difference even with better armored or armed tank such as the T-34 as they were obliged to charge indistinctly their enemy. But I agree with you in a way: first Panzer were well designed for the Blitzkrieg with air and number superiority but not for a long war such as WW2 became.
@PanzerAce88mm The 5 cm gun was based on the good old PaK 38 anti-tank gun which made it good against the T-34 more or less actually. Low velocity 75mm cannons are almost useless except for HE work - still dangerous to infantry. WHat about the Panzer IV though? Or do you prefer the Panzer III?
This was the tank which crushed Poland and France. Along with other vehicles of course, but this is iconic of the early days of ww2

good vehicle. from 1939-41 it was supperior. i dont like the N model with the low-vilocity 7.5cm. but the 5cm was pretty cool.
