All the Communist countries would give high marks to their skaters and the others would be just a tad lower. Vice Versa for any other skater, high marks from us and low from Communist allies. Nothing about Zayak's skate was better than this. Not the jumps, not the spins, not the footwork, certainly not the artistry. I think Zayak could have been higher than 6th in the short but Witt and Chin were clearly the 2 best.
Well, it was low. But when you think about it, she spent an awful amount of time in this program just standing around. The beginning takes forever to get going. And then the choreography between her camel combination spin and her other combination spin is dreadfully slow and easy. In a 2.5 minute program,you should not spend so much time just standing around. That should be factored in to the presentation marks.

There was a debate back then between a European view of presentation (which was more artistry and theatrics/character interpretation) and a North American view of presentation (which centered on speed, ice coverage and edging/flow). That sometimes was the reason the European judges and North American/Japanese judges responded differently to the same skate. The new scoring system has sort of equalized that divergence, but not totally.
