BTW, learn to punctuate and spell correctly. I cannot tell you how many transcripts I've seen where it appears that the reporter has yet to achieve a minimal grasp of second-grade grammer. Our school system does little to correct that flaw. Far too little emphasis has been placed on those skills today, and it is patently obvious that many, if not most, young graduates are terribly, horribly lacking in the basic rules which are the foundation of our language and communication skills.
And that would be FORTY. Secondly, work on your English without end, and attempt to speak without using I mean, you know, like, and all the rest of the words we commonly use as fillers while we attempt to think of what we really want to say. If you must slow down when speaking to achieve that goal, so be it. Be well-read as well. There will be many obscure references during your career where a broad-based overall knowledge will aid you in your endeavors. Good luck and study hard.
Forget the support system. You won't have it in the real world. Be ready to write accurately from the first moment. You don't have 20 minutes when the shootin' starts. I've been a reporter for 40... that's right. FORT... years, passed the Certificate of Proficiency and Certificate of Merit back-to-back, the same day. Don't set your goal at graduation speed. Set it at 240, 260, 280, and practice, practice, practice. If you're shooting for those speeds, 225 will appear one day effortlessly
Having been a court reporter for 20 years, I would not recommend it for you, only because attorneys can be brutal about their demands in having an accurate record. Not to say you wouldn't be accurate, but if it's a struggle in any way (it has been a struggle for me many times) it will just make your job more difficult. It's a very tough job anyway. Hope this helps.
Hang in there. It will get better. I've been an Official Reporter for over 7 years and freelanced for 2 years. Continue to perservere and pray for God's strength to get you through. And remember to PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!! God Bless!!!
your so rite im in schoo too nd im working so hard but people dont understand what we do is hard but the ones in school with us or people who made it im in 80........
Hey, I met her last week and she did a great demonstration of stenography for me. She was really good. I didn't understand the symbols, but hey, she knew what she was doing. I am really looking into entering in this field. Thanks Candice.
it takes discipline to do this job. i am looking at career change, i have college degree and looking at this field. when learning something new, takes time. takes practice practice, dont let others discourage you, some discourage you because they jealous. you are moving on and moving up, and they are not. i may do my studies online because of work. hang in there because each step is closer to the goal.
I feel you on this once I conquer a lesson it motivates you to keep going, and the sad part is that I have supported many of my friends and family in college and now that im finally in college where are they now?
Everything Candice is saying and all the comments are so correct. I've often said a lot of things she's saying. Nobody but other students really understands how hard this is to do and how long it takes. Sometimes, it really irritates me when people repeatedly ask me when I'll 'be done.' I just get a blank look when I explain that I'll 'be done' when I can certify at 225 wpm. A good support system would be nice. The people at my school aren't interested in being friendly or supportive really.
You are very right about people having no clue about how stressful this school experience can be. The support system is cool though, but I've had a couple of bad experiences with some. So for the most part I keep my distance, because this field is already stressful. Yo, I'm going to watch your other videos. This is cool I came across this. 1
You are awesome for posting! I am a court reporting student in houston and I just moved to 160s..Nobody knows what we go through accept other students. You are doing a wonderful job. What theory are you using?
