This is something I do unconsciously just because when I stretch it hurts my hand.
When I was in music class playing the clarinet my teacher used to say "practice doesn't make perfect, practice make permanent" meaning if you practice the wrong thing it'll be hard to change. It's always in the back of my mind when I practice guitar.
basic guitar, they taught me to use my left hand like that when I was 10, very beginning of my classical guitar training...but I can understand that people learning with no teacher and watching the wrong guitar players can develop bad habits! :-P
honestly, i did not realise this was a technique. when i play guitar, i move my thumb up and down unconsciously all the time to relieve pressure on the left hand...
Awesome! Been playing for like 12 years and have really small hands...so I've always had a ton of difficulty reaching frets further down. So simple and I didn't think about it. Thank you good sir.

I like how in the title it's called a simple technique and then at the end it says advanced.

lol I just realised that my pinky is reaching 3 frets with the thumb up there.. and I've been playing just 4 years now..
but I'm playing hendrix/srv/clapton/mayer style, and I have a pretty big hand, so I know why is that so. lol
