  • a brolly is slang for umbrella in England.....surely its the same in photography !

  • Is this just any random umbrella or is there a certain material the umbrella needs???????

  • I am watching CreativeLive right now.

Zack Arias: doesn't seem to have his own YouTube channel

David Hobby: same situation as Zack

Joe Mcnally: has a YouTube channel but isn't teaching much as lighting goes

Chase Jarvis (my fav): Same situation as Joe

Maybe I just missed their videos on it but none of them is really going in depth with the basics. Their workshops in the other hand, AMAZING!!! But again, not everybody can afford them.

  • @iamawinner2 I've never done studio lighting, and I never said I did. Actually, I'm just starting to learn all of this.

So if not expertvillage on YouTube, who on YouTube have posted videos on studio lighting and giving them out for free? Or are you going to suggest me that I should spend hundreds of dollars for workshops when not everybody has the luxury of spending that kind of money? Are you just going to tell me "Then this is not for you"?

How about this, please do a video and show us.

  • @iamawinner2 Don't get me wrong, I know she's not 100% accurate, but heck, I learned the difference between both umbrellas, that I can get an umbrella that has both versions, and also that it's a cheap alternative to a softbox. The rest, texasimagepro did point it out as incorrect, which I agree. But my point still stands, I still learned something which is better than nothing.

Now, to all the "pros", please do videos so that we can learn from "pros"

  • I have never in my life seen someone more confident -- and more wrong. A small umbrella will spread as much light as a large one -- the results on the subject will not be as diffuse. The white without black backing reflects just as much as the black backed one, the black absorbs light passing through, so the light is more controlled, and finally the black backed light is not a brolly. Thank you for taking your time to make this, but next time just point your viewers to the real experts!

  • @texasimagepro Please make a video and explain it the way it should be. Either than that, she's on expertvillage, not you.

  • @wilbertcs Sorry dude but texasimagepro is correct... EXPERTvillage should be full of CORRECT information!

  • @iamawinner2 Should but if they are not, who will do these videos? I'm just tired of people saying how it's suppose to be done but won't share that info by making a video.

At the end, I'd rather have any help than not to have any help at all.

  • @texasimagepro Brolly......English slang for umbrella.

  • very poor, very incomplete explanation of basic lighting tool. For example, she doesn't show the umbrella as it would look in actual use: on a light stand, with a light, aimed at or feathered to a subject. Almost no useful information.

  • Thanks chick !

  • hi. I am really new to the photography scene so can anyone explain to me how to use these umbrellas i.e where to place them and how to set them up and what they are etc

    Thanks

  • It's funny cuz the lighing on this vid is terrible xD

  • hey there,

    whats a soft box???

  • light from Umbrella's is very different to the purpose of a softbox!

shoot though Umbrella's scatter light over a massive area (forward and backwards), and soft boxes are all about directional light so you can have more control.

A reflective umbrella reflects light back in a more general way than a soft box (note the shape difference!!!).

Good introduction to light modifiers, but not great explanation ('expert'village? Really??)

  • @AndyBJ you're right!

  • Hate the text infront!

  • how can i get away the tekst in the front??

  • BAD LUCK lol

  • What about the strobe? Do I have to buy it separately? Can I sync it with any camera?

  • You're the sexiest chick I've ever seen, girl :D

  • Brollie is used when the umbrella has material that extends to the light sorce. Preventing light spilling out the sides. These two unbrellas are not brollies. The black one is called convertable not brollie.

  • Finally a useful video on expert village! Thanks for sharing.

  • Thanks. nice short video.

  • brollie -is english for umbrella- both sound strange.

  • Good stuff - I'll pass this along to all my newsletter subscribers.
