The Constitution protects the right to bear arms, so that the people can form militias, which can either fight the government, or at least, scare the government into not abusing the people. The Founding Fathers who wanted militias to have weapons would not have them be handicapped by having only obsolete weapons.

You can call if "reasonable" or not, but it's crystal clear in the Constituiton itself, though we also have the writing of Madison and Jefferson to back it up, that the 2nd Amendment is there so people can keep the police in line. You can go on and on all you want, but I would say, if they wanted only well regulated militias to have guns, they could have said, "the right of the people to form well regulated armed militias shall not be infringed". The expresss blanket prohibition on gun control is a protection so that the government can not disarm well-regulated militias by disarming the individual members. It's not me saying it, it's the Second Amendment to the Constitution saying it, "the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed". This right is about as clear as it can get. And "arms" still has the same meaning it did back then. Obviously, new and far more dangerous arms have been invented. Nuclear ARMS, can not really be used to make war against the government in a meaningful way.

Getting non-voters to the polls may be more important than militias, but that's the reason it's in the Constitution, despite what any may say. As to individual rights to gun ownership, the 2nd amendment gives them complete protection. All gun control laws, applied to people not guilty of any crime, are unconstitional. I am not saying gun laws are bad, just that they are blatantly unconstitutional. Someone charged with gun possession should say, "but how can I kill the police without a gun?"

Imprinted barcodes ensure than when a bullet is found deep inside some U.S. citizen's body, the police can track that bullet back to the gun that fired it and have a clue as to the perpetrator. If you're only using guns for defensive and sporting purposes, I can't imagine why you have a problem with it.

More people use them in defense then to commit a crime. This issue is not black and white. Restricting guns cannot change a culture. Mexico has a ban on guns and less guns per capita then the US but much more gun crime. Switzerland has more guns per capita then the US and less gun crime. The issue comes down to culture. 2/3 of all people murdered with guns each year are criminals according to the FBI and ATF.

The evidence is that there are very, very few examples of guns being used in the way you claim, i.e., to save people from criminals. That's NRA mythology. As for me I don't personally need a gun and I live in a safe community, but it should be a persons right especially if they live in a dangerous area to have a gun to protect their familys. If we do this it's one step towards a communist nation. Also studys show area's where guns are legal are generally safer.
