My parents were totally freaking out about Gilbert - but in their defense, that storm took up almost the entirety of the Gulf

When Hurricane Gilbert struck the Texas Gulf Coast, San Antonio was lucky enough to allow their schools to be in session notwithstanding.

School closed for all the same places just a couple months ago for hurricane Ike. Deer Park district was out for an entire week.

Actually, that's not the case. The area impacted by Ike locally was less than what would've been affected by Gilbert and several of the districts and institutions were open the entire time.

Still some districts were out for weeks.
Galveston ISD shut down, too (I was in the first grade back then). My family and I went to Texarkana. Good times.
