Yes, Wolvy, I hear what you say, BUT..many people will visit your video and leave with the wrong impression of the song. Er..I don't want to sound like a pedantic folkie here, but...John Tams wrote the song *specifically* to highlight the lives of FISHERMEN, not the D Day Landings. You'll find the quote from Sir Walter Scott, which prompted the song, on his CD...The Reckoning
@LizzieCornish Thank you for another great comment, I have updated the discription of this vid, I hope it infoms people what the song is about, though that depends on people reading the discription I guess lol.
This song has nothing to do with the D Day Landings. It's about the danger our fishermen put themselves into, each and every time they leave port, never knowing if they'll make it home again. It relates to fishermen throughout time..and John Tams always tell the story before he sings the song...Thank you for posting the song, but the slides do misrepresent the meaning of it...
@LizzieCornish I have said a few times now, that yes this is a song about fisher men, the danger they faced day after day. Yet I use this, and the slides in the vid, as, when combined they sum up my feelings about the D-Day landing's. I am sorry you feel i misrepresent the meaning of this song however, and will try harder next time. Thank you for the comment.
Too many people die in the name of the cowards running these stupid and pathetic countries! we need a new way of thinking, trouble is they think as long as there is people willing to die for the "Cause" it'll never change! RIP to the people who died in all wars and future wars!
Well said, for as one of the last british soldiers from world war one said "remember the Germans, for they went through it all as well" or words to that effect.
Comments have been made, about this being a song about fishing in the north sea, etc. While that's true, I use this song, for a few reason's, because it focuses on the sea, also it deal's with the fear these men must have faced "some planks of wood no thicker than your thumb, it's all that keeps the telling of our story from being lost, or maybe being won" say's it all really, but enjoy it for what you take it to mean. Thankyou to those who took part, and paid the highest price. R.I.P
agree with you playstationgamer44 they were all brave men, my own father was a medico with the british army he landed on sword beach he lived to tell the tale. He was never really able to tell us exactly what it was like, emotion would overcome him, I dread to think what he saw. We all owe them so much let us never forget but learn from this NO MORE WARS
The Normandy invasion had nothing to do with Germans developing missiles it was just Operation Overlord and the Allies needed nORMANDY TO PUSH TOWARDS bERLIN
Allies had to go into Europe, since Germans were creating their new missiles. God knows what would have happened if D-Day failed and Germany would have been able to launch their missiles to England (it would take some time for Russians to get all the way to France to stop the missiles).
would like to say thank-you for posting this. Now i understand why my Husbands Grampy didnt like talking about the war. He was there during this terrible day
Those men were the bravest, to run on a beach were bullets fly everywhere, to free Europe from the Nazis. Those men who fought that day will never be forgotting.
Today I was listening to interviews with some of those brave men. They are such great people. I think the way our country is today makes them sick sometimes. We still have so much good, but it's just not like it used to be.
How many people today could be in a landing craft hearing a machine gun hitting the front door, knowing that when it opens, those bullets are coming in. Brave, brave souls.
Remember, we can sit here and hash over this and other great battles in both Europe and the Pacific because of the sacrifices of brave men from several countries. We owe each of them a great debt that can never be repaid.
what was the purpose of the aryan nation? too rid the world of all non aryans? so what happened? i am just curious bcuz i have two boys that are less then ten years old who would happily give there lives to make sure that the holacaust will never happen again and i will be proud of them because you lost. it is that simple. who was hitller and the nazis but an idea that got there ass whipped by men named stalin, roosevelt and churchill.
Beautifully done. I am going to post this on my Facebook tomorrow in remembrance of Douglas C. Taylor who was there. He survived and came home to devote his life to teaching peace. "The northern sea knows well the sound of weeping." Indeed.
Hmm i dont thinks so because Russia would come and defeat Berlin. And Hitler could not invade Russia because it was to cold thats what i am thinking... -.-
I kind of doubt Hitler would have gained contol of Europe if d-day didnt go through, it think it just sped up the process. Thinking about it Hitler was running out of men after Stalingrad. The allies could have gone on the defense and Hitler's Germany would have withered. What do you guys think?
Hitler could not fight on 2 fronts,Germany had already lost the Battle of Britain so could not invade without air superiority,he simply had to attack Russia, his war machine needed the Baku oil fields to keep them running,he thought{against the advice of his Generals}that he would steamroll Russia, simply bad planning on his behalf.
At that point, there were no longer countries fighting, It was Axis vs Allies. To say one country contributed more cannot be compared. Every Country gave what they could. Every life lost for the cause was equally important. An Americans soldiers life was no more important than any other Allied soldier's life lost.
From a military view of WW2 in Europe you can quite easily conclude that the Red Army contributed the most to the end of Nazi Germany since 86% of all German casualties were inflicted on the Eastern Front.
This is something that has been discarded in US history teaching.
I am not, however, discarding the importance of lend-lease to the USSR.
i hate it when people fight over whos country faught the best, i respect all who died in the war, doesnt matter about country all nations took casualties and deserved victory against the nazis.
this song, infact, has nothing to do with war, it's a tribute to those who go to sea to seek the fishing grounds. It was written for a play named The Good Hope, which featured John Tams in a very crucial role.
Yes, that is true, and, as I have said before, I made this as a tribute to those who willingly risk their lives. The pictures of the D-Day landing's seem fitting to me, for the song focuses on the sea, and the sea played a large part on that day, indeed the whole war revolved around the sea.
Yet, if you see it as a song about fisher men, or as a tribute to those who gave their lives, and those willing to do so, just enjoy the song for what it is, a hauntingly beautiful song. :D
I agree with you. I have said things that I regret, and to all decent Americans for this I apologise. I have as I've said many good friends 'across the Pond', who I have the greatest respect for. And we do appreciate the help during WWII. But it just makes me see red when the minority always start having a go at my country. I'm sorry, but it's out of order. I'm not that patriotic, not anymore, but I won't sit by and watch somebody bad mouth us either.
At Least the British shoot the enemy 90% of the time, You Yanks really need to learn how to shoot straight. 1944.. hundreds of your own dead, and it was only an excercise. 1944, hundreds of your own ... again, bombed by B17's, trapped on the beaches and had to have your sorry asses bailed out by.... Oh yes, the British.
Shut UP scaryguy, if we're that bad, how come we didn't bomb the living crap out of Ireland? It works for Isreal..
And if we'd lost how long do you think you'd have lasted, wake up and smell the Sh** idiot. You guys only fought one war on your own, and you freaking lost it.... VIETNAM
clearly jboweruk you know nothing about history america did not lose the vietnam war. In fact its safe to say atleast they made the effort unlike the uk who pulled out of Indochina during the Geneva Accords. While America was in Vietnam. South Vietnam did not fall into the hands of Ho Chi Minh something that would have happened in the 1950's had America not intervened, granted the US did pull out and took huge casulties but while they were there they did not lose.
they were FORCED to pull out by extremely heavy casualties, they did not win, erego they lost. And commited attrocious acts of inhumanity both there and in Korea. My point was we did not NEED the help of the US, Germany was already on her knees when they entered WWII, if anything they need us more than we'll ever need them. Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of good American friends, for whom I have the greatest respect and admiration, and so too for the men who died in the name of freedom.
they should have pulled out a lot earlier and i'll agree with you their but they didnt lose because they did what they set out to do while they were there however they didn't win either just prolonged the inevitable. True they committed atrocities and i'm not justifying it but nearly every nation has. But i will disagree with you over WWII. The British although winning the battle of britain were only saved by the english channel had it not been there the German army would have destroyed Britain.
english got a fucked up attidtude anyways because they made errors in the past they wanne hide it up with tough talk, how come the black prince of england died on a assasination raid against him then? because they were ambushed at night idiot so go fuck urselfe
I have to wonder why anybody posts these type of vids, their intention is good, but for some reason it always turns into a bun fight, and it's always a yank who starts it. This thread was full of pretty decent comments remembering the fallen, until a yank came in here and started slagging off the brits.
My last comment is this, without us there would have been no America. We created you. We're supposed to be alllies, but it's the attitude problem you guys have.
I feel you are forgetting it was not just the British, US and Canadians my friends.
Poles, Checkoslovakians, Australians, South Africans and many, many more were involved in bringing Hitler down. You think Britain could've fought alone for so long without our commonweath Friends? We held Hitler for 3 years, and to do it we had a lot of help, from survivors of the invaded countries, through most of the old British Empire. We are eternally grateful to all of them. We shan't forget.
Well, i would say, seeing as it was an allied victory, that all of those involved owe a debt to the other nations, yes the UK owes a debt to the nations of the old empire. Yet, without the K fighting on, the Polish, French, American, Canadian, New Zealand, and all the other nations would not have a had a front to fight on, Russia may have become involved, but that would only have been a war on one front, not two as it turned out. All in all, I feel i owe a debt to all those who fought and died.
Well put my friend, we all owe a debt to each other. Because no one country could've done it, much as our American cousins like to think they can take on the world alone, as many other Empires have one day they will find out... You can't.
scarygary, lets just clear one thing up by the time the americans landed in france in 1944 the war was as good as over the Russians were driving the germans back towards Berlin. Whether the allies landed troops wouldnt have changed the outcome of victory it just sped it up slightly.
I've got to disagree. American support to the Allies by direct involvement came in many different forms other than man-power. If the D-Day invasion failed, there's no telling what that could have done to skyrocket Nazi morale. As for the Allies, D-Day took 2 years to plan. The loss of equipment, morale, and expedience could have had devastating affects. It also would have given Stalin all the cards in Europe, a thought equally as terrifying as Germany holding all the cards.
Hell, i was so relieved hearing this nice nice song instead of that gotdamn clichê, requiem of a dream soundtrack, that is on every video on youtube! Good job :)
You can tell how much History has been re-written when you have posters say "The Germans never killed Jews" what's this world coming too! Lord have Mercy.
The helmeted GI standing in front of Eisenhower, then directly in his back froe ground is a GI with a full head of hair. This was my great uncle Patrick Jay Lyman. As a child I always looked up to him and his accomplishments. As an individual he was as mean as a dog from hell but a good loyal man.
My grandfather was a tail gunner in a B-17 in this same war and actually made it home. My dad fought during Vietnam, I fought during desert storm.
Well, let me say, as much as I dislike war, I have a lot of respect for anyone who is willing to go and fight, and that your family has a long history of warfare, well, you have my respect and thanks.
Lucky yes, the actual life span of a tail gunner in a B-17 was 11 seconds after combat initiation. Lucky because after a few missions my grandfather hurt his back during a mission and was removed from the service. Luck wears different masks eh?
I read that a tail gunner was lucky if they survived 10 missions, and that was it. That was when they usually expected to replace the tailgunner. Plus and whenever i play a game in a bomber the tailgunner is the first one killed. :P
There are still USA soldiers today that tell lies about witnessing a "Holocaust" at those camps even though it was the russians who liberated all the camps in Poland. USA govt no longer makes any claims that the Germans ever gassed any people inside Germany's borders but the USA soldiers still tell lies in order to give themselves fake hero status. Otherwise, all that the USA soldiers would be able to say is that they assisted in turning over all those nations to the evils of jew communism.
Wow, you arebrillant. I loved to meet any of the WWII soldiers that lie about the holocaust. Any way you can set up a meeting for an interview with any of them for me? That be great.
Time magazine gives them all space to spout their lies all the time. What happened at the protective camps of the Germans such as Auschwitz was that The Allies bombed the shit out of all the German supply warehouses and railways which was the cause of all the suffering the last few months on WWII. The Allies didn't want the outside world to ever learn that they intentionally caused such starvation and disease so they agreed to make up lies about defeated Germany doing it on purpose.
Sweet. Time magazine. Which issues? I would like to learn more about this. Do you have dates and article references? Please post specific references so I can research this for myself. Thanks
Time gave Iowa mailman James Hoyt an entire article to spout his propaganda lies in early Decemeber of 2008. He was dead fo course so couldn't hook him up to a polygraph unfortunately. There have been numerous jewish scam artists who have gotten caught red-handed telling lies about WWII such as Jerzy Kosinski, Elie Wiesel, Primo Levi, Mischa Defonseca, Herman Rosenblat and of course Anne Frank was a total hoax.
Thats interesting the work camp that James Hoyt was liberating,Buchenwald, had excuted over 1,000 soviets soldiers in 1941-1942 two years BEFORE the Americans were in France. (he Americans had to go to France first to get to Germany.) Before the American bombed the supply warehouses and railways humans were executed at "protection" camps. Nice theorys except... YOU FAIL.
The USA sent medical teams led by Major Charles Larson into those camps to do autopsies and they never uncovered even one single person who had been murdered by the Germans. All those who died were the result of malnutrition and disease caused by The Allies when they bombed all of the German supply warhouses and railways. "The Final Solution" had nothing to do with jews but was the German plan to resolve all of the territorial disputes. jews are all pathological liars and thieves.
Awesome I didn't even bring up the Jews. EwaAulin said that the Allies had caused all the suffering at 'protection' camps. WRONG!!! The Germans were MURDERING humans at the camps before the allied bombing of supply warehouses and supply lines. On top of all of that how do you win a war? KILL the Enemy! Kill the enemy! Kill the ENEMY! Destroy as much of your enemys people, supplies, troops and everything else in between. I'm not defending the Jews. You both are WRONG. YOU LOSE!!! -1000 internets
My Great Uncle Jay Lyman stands in the crowd of 82nd Airborne in the picture with Eisenhower.
He made it home, many did not. My grandfather flew missions over nazi Germany as a tail gunner in a B-17, my father fought in Vietnam, I am a Desert Storm Vet.
Freedom has a flavor the protected will never know.
If you can read what I am writing, thank a teacher.
Thank you very much for taking the trouble to reply WF1, and thank you for putting the song up here for many people to perhaps hear for the first time. John Tams has written some wonderful songs about England, as well as won many, many Awards for his songs. People should check out the new Radio Ballads (just google) done by John and the BBC, absolutely wonderful.
Thank you again for letting everyone hear John's music.
This song is about fishermen, not about the D Day Landings. If you go and see John Tams singing it, he'll tell you all about it. It tells the story of how tough a fisherman's life is, how their families wait at home for them, not knowing if they'll ever see them again. And they do it all for us, as well as to earn a meagre living. It truly has nothing to do with D Day. But it's still lovely to hear it. You can hear this song on John Tams beautiful CD 'The Reckoning'....
Yes the song has nothing to do with te D-Day landing's, and upon reflection, i feel that picture's of the evacuation at Dunkirk would have worked better. For those few day's at the start of the second world war, the crew's of fishing, naval, and other boat's took on extra danger's to save as many lives as they could. Thank you for your comment, it is alway's good to hear from someone who enjoy's this beautiful song :)
so the leader in all the nation who love war,my message for you is if you want to start a war, why don't you feel it by your self what the feel in the front liner, you love war is because you only sit in write, and get the benefit of all the victim of war, hopefully all the leader in the world think only for peace, and there will be no bloodshet.we all are brother and sister. thanks
my message is only for remainding people do not ever start a war, and do not forget that german army have a family like american soldier, the german soldier is fought for their freedom too. so you cannot blaim the german soldier, the people should blame is their leader,
So many young men gave their all upon the alter of freedom on June 1944 that it is up to us never to forget them. 1,000 WWll vets die every week if you know one ask him to tell you a little history they carry of the greatest war of our time.
Some find it hard to though, joevet66, My grandfather was an abulance driver in the war and if my mother, who was a nurse for a time, talked about her day to him, say there was a particularly nasty accident or something, he would simply reply 'You know nothing' in a very angry tone and walk away. She asked him once what it was like...she had exactly the same reply.
i'm from indonesia,i think war is shit, people who love war is because they never been in there before,so why you like war?? this movie show us that war is never ever good. may peace be with us forever
It is the soldier, not the reporter who has given us Freedom of the Press.
It is the soldier, not the poet who has given us Freedom of Speech.
It is the soldier, not the campus organizer who has given us the Freedom to Demonstrate.
It is the soldier, not the lawyer who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It is the soldier who salutes the falg, serves under the flag and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who gives the protestor the right to burn the flag.
On this day the most Germaan troops in russia. The USA and The Britains have stolen europa from germany. The Britain Bastards have Bombs of Dresden ,and killed Childs and Old Peoples.i hate usa..usa have killed the indians people...i hate you so usa....fuck greetings from god old GERMANY..
kilterfine, what you on about .stole europe from you ,europe didnt belong to you ,you invaded it , who started it ,you did, who bombed warsaw.rotterdam,london,liverpool,birmingham,belfast.portsmouth,newcastle,leningrad etc etc , dont come here moaning about dresden, goebbels wanted total war, and he got it .you killed 20million soviet civilians, 6million jews and destroyed most of europe ,without us ,germany would of been completely taken over by the russians,go and cry somewhere else
Nazi's killed 6 million innocent Jews, including women and children. Nazi V-1 rocket killed many innocents in London. I hate you and so does everyone else.
wow kilterfine suck my left nut cuz my grandpaw lost 2 of his best friends in market garden and got shot in the shoulder. and im proudly goin to serve my country the day i turn 18 i will skip school that day to go enlist so fuck the terrorists and the nazi scum
yes the allies american, british, soviet saved the world by defeating nazi & japan, otherwise more japanese, korean will be chosen as kamikaze pilots, more jews will be killed.
Digitalunderground2, thank you for your comment, and I know what you mean, and i have the utmost respect for all who fought in that war, however this video, while it does contain image's of the D-Day landing's is not just about the second world war, it is about all war's. I use these image's to illustrate the massive undertaking that is war, and the high cost of that undertaking.
America didn't win the war they didn't even join in WW2 until pearl harbor got bombed. I'm not saying they didn't help but they certainly do not deserve all the credit.
Thank you to all the brave souls that fought the forces of darkness. Thanks to them I am writing this as a free soul. Long live the allies and God bless the beautiful United States of America!

Great song and pictures, war is terrible 5*
STUGAUF01 2 years ago 8
At that point, there were no longer countries fighting, It was Axis vs Allies. To say one country contributed more cannot be compared. Every Country gave what they could. Every life lost for the cause was equally important. An Americans soldiers life was no more important than any other Allied soldier's life lost.
surfnturf1384 2 years ago 8
From a military view of WW2 in Europe you can quite easily conclude that the Red Army contributed the most to the end of Nazi Germany since 86% of all German casualties were inflicted on the Eastern Front.
This is something that has been discarded in US history teaching.
I am not, however, discarding the importance of lend-lease to the USSR.

who is john tams!!!
richieboy12549 2 years ago
this song, infact, has nothing to do with war, it's a tribute to those who go to sea to seek the fishing grounds. It was written for a play named The Good Hope, which featured John Tams in a very crucial role.
themotherofallmorris 2 years ago

It works for Isreal..

jboweruk 3 years ago 2
clearly jboweruk you know nothing about history america did not lose the vietnam war.
AshleyH91 3 years ago
they were FORCED to pull out by extremely heavy casualties, they did not win, erego they lost. And commited attrocious acts of inhumanity both there and in Korea. My point was we did not NEED the help of the US, Germany was already on her knees when they entered WWII, if anything they need us more than we'll ever need them. Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of good American friends, for whom I have the greatest respect and admiration, and so too for the men who died in the name of freedom.
jboweruk 3 years ago
they should have pulled out a lot earlier and i'll agree with you their but they didnt lose because they did what they set out to do while they were there however they didn't win either just prolonged the inevitable. True they committed atrocities and i'm not justifying it but nearly every nation has. But i will disagree with you over WWII. The British although winning the battle of britain were only saved by the english channel had it not been there the German army would have destroyed Britain.

We shan't forget.
jboweruk 3 years ago 2
Agreed teh UK is forever in debt to the other countries who saved their ass.
Obliterate7676 3 years ago
Well, i would say, seeing as it was an allied victory, that all of those involved owe a debt to the other nations, yes the UK owes a debt to the nations of the old empire. Yet, without the K fighting on, the Polish, French, American, Canadian, New Zealand, and all the other nations would not have a had a front to fight on, Russia may have become involved, but that would only have been a war on one front, not two as it turned out. All in all, I feel i owe a debt to all those who fought and died.
WolvesFanNo1 3 years ago
Well put my friend, we all owe a debt to each other. Because no one country could've done it, much as our American cousins like to think they can take on the world alone, as many other Empires have one day they will find out... You can't.

You God damned redcoats, don't think we forgot what you did to us...1776 never forget the brutality of the British.
scarygary76 3 years ago
scarygary, lets just clear one thing up by the time the americans landed in france in 1944 the war was as good as over the Russians were driving the germans back towards Berlin. Whether the allies landed troops wouldnt have changed the outcome of victory it just sped it up slightly.
AshleyH91 3 years ago
I've got to disagree. American support to the Allies by direct involvement came in many different forms other than man-power. If the D-Day invasion failed, there's no telling what that could have done to skyrocket Nazi morale. As for the Allies, D-Day took 2 years to plan. The loss of equipment, morale, and expedience could have had devastating affects. It also would have given Stalin all the cards in Europe, a thought equally as terrifying as Germany holding all the cards.

Tailgunner? Seriously and made it? He must be one lucky man.
arksolo2 3 years ago
Lucky yes, the actual life span of a tail gunner in a B-17 was 11 seconds after combat initiation. Lucky because after a few missions my grandfather hurt his back during a mission and was removed from the service. Luck wears different masks eh?
sealion1962 3 years ago

EwaAulin 3 years ago
Wow, you arebrillant. I loved to meet any of the WWII soldiers that lie about the holocaust. Any way you can set up a meeting for an interview with any of them for me? That be great.
BostonMohawks 3 years ago
Time magazine gives them all space to spout their lies all the time. What happened at the protective camps of the Germans such as Auschwitz was that The Allies bombed the shit out of all the German supply warehouses and railways which was the cause of all the suffering the last few months on WWII. The Allies didn't want the outside world to ever learn that they intentionally caused such starvation and disease so they agreed to make up lies about defeated Germany doing it on purpose.
EwaAulin 3 years ago
Sweet. Time magazine. Which issues? I would like to learn more about this. Do you have dates and article references? Please post specific references so I can research this for myself. Thanks
BostonMohawks 3 years ago
Time gave Iowa mailman James Hoyt an entire article to spout his propaganda lies in early Decemeber of 2008. He was dead fo course so couldn't hook him up to a polygraph unfortunately. There have been numerous jewish scam artists who have gotten caught red-handed telling lies about WWII such as Jerzy Kosinski, Elie Wiesel, Primo Levi, Mischa Defonseca, Herman Rosenblat and of course Anne Frank was a total hoax.
EwaAulin 3 years ago
Thats interesting the work camp that James Hoyt was liberating,Buchenwald, had excuted over 1,000 soviets soldiers in 1941-1942 two years BEFORE the Americans were in France. (he Americans had to go to France first to get to Germany.) Before the American bombed the supply warehouses and railways humans were executed at "protection" camps. Nice theorys except... YOU FAIL.
I award you -100 internets
GOOD DAY, SIR!
BostonMohawks 3 years ago
The USA sent medical teams led by Major Charles Larson into those camps to do autopsies and they never uncovered even one single person who had been murdered by the Germans. All those who died were the result of malnutrition and disease caused by The Allies when they bombed all of the German supply warhouses and railways. "The Final Solution" had nothing to do with jews but was the German plan to resolve all of the territorial disputes. jews are all pathological liars and thieves.
NewFromDisney 3 years ago
Awesome I didn't even bring up the Jews. EwaAulin said that the Allies had caused all the suffering at 'protection' camps. WRONG!!! The Germans were MURDERING humans at the camps before the allied bombing of supply warehouses and supply lines. On top of all of that how do you win a war? KILL the Enemy! Kill the enemy! Kill the ENEMY! Destroy as much of your enemys people, supplies, troops and everything else in between. I'm not defending the Jews. You both are WRONG. YOU LOSE!!! -1000 internets

LizzieCornish 3 years ago
This song is about fishermen, not about the D Day Landings. If you go and see John Tams singing it, he'll tell you all about it. It tells the story of how tough a fisherman's life is, how their families wait at home for them, not knowing if they'll ever see them again. And they do it all for us, as well as to earn a meagre living. It truly has nothing to do with D Day. But it's still lovely to hear it. You can hear this song on John Tams beautiful CD 'The Reckoning'....
LizzieCornish 3 years ago
Yes the song has nothing to do with te D-Day landing's, and upon reflection, i feel that picture's of the evacuation at Dunkirk would have worked better. For those few day's at the start of the second world war, the crew's of fishing, naval, and other boat's took on extra danger's to save as many lives as they could. Thank you for your comment, it is alway's good to hear from someone who enjoy's this beautiful song :)
