  • look down while you squat...??? not a good idea bud

  • he is not getting his chest up, is he?

  • watching the "fixed" squats hurts my back just to watch

  • LMFAO i found this video hilarious!!!

  • DONT BEND THE LOWER BACK........VERY IMP

  • see when i try this my hips rise too much and i fine i end up goodmorning the weight instead of squatting

  • @B2theYBroWny same, i think it might be weaker upper back/traps to legs...

  • Watching squat videos has made me realize that my form is terrible, I either hurt my lower back or my knees.

  • Wouldn't looking down cause you to lean forward more? That happens to me a lot when I squat heavy but that's from not always sticking my butt out. I've also used my knees to much which has caused problems with them too.

  • @crazygoat85 Just trolling to see responses ^^

  • A better way of describing it is to drive your hips forward to stand, rather than up. Seems more intuitive for the lay person.

  • Really helpful as I traing alone without a spotter. My gym is full with fucking curlbros(and freakin' cable machines lover) and no one even squats, so basically I am the only one doing this and none there can help me master the squat so I godda watch myself.

Many thanks for the upload good sir.

  • i found whattheholf91 comment look on page 4 or 5

  • Hey little bitch, is this the instructor commenting or the kid cause I have no problem with the kid.

  • I'm sorry but the guy teaching this is an idiot. Don't look down when you squat because then you bend your back and can hurt it. If someone were to watch you squat you want to be able to read their chest

  • @zeelandeastfootball fuck you

  • @zeelandeastfootball Are you really going to claim that Mark Rippetoe doesn't know about squatting? Are you familiar with his reputation in the industry?

  • everything looks good except his wrist. Locked wrist and he is set.

  • Wow I can't believe how misinformed I was, I never drove my hips up, I was up to doing 260lbs in sets without the hip drive, my weight went up almost 40lbs now that I added the hip drive, thumbs up!

  • @ZiItoid I know what you mean! I was finding the weight I was lifting getting too heavy until I fixed my hip drive during my last workout. Holy moly how much easier is it now hey!

  • this video, if seen properly, holds the potential to forever change ur life nd make you stronger for a lifetime

  • this is all wrong

  • This kid sucks with instruction

  • Dude, tight hip flexors are the problem.

  • This guy has nooooo idea!!

  • @1:05 Seems like Rip thought, "This is looking gay now. Awkward. I'll move to the side."

  • The old guy is a sexual predator the young guy is his victim

  • This is a great video for low-bar squatting. Excellent. For myself, I prefer a high bar squat for athletic purposes though. Go on my channel, just put up a 405x4 squat vid with perfect form. And by that, I mean perfect. Full squat too.

  • For one person to tell another person that their stance needs to be a certain width or that they need to point their toes out more is total crap. We all have individual body geometries and each individual knows where they are the most efficient and how to exploit the geometry of their frame. To all the newbies: Don't let some A-hole force you to stand in a certain way just because he happens to be considered a guru at the moment. Figure out what is right for you.

  • @mensacyclist

Yeah, every single person on Earth knows perfect form with free weights right from the beginning. Are you serious?

  • @Christheballer2 The whole point is that there is no such thing as "perfect form". There is such a thing as "bad form" and "good form". But not everyone's "good form" is going to look identical to the next person's. This is common sense. The day we all have identical stance, foot placement, and foot spacing is the day that we all have identical hip width, femur length, spine length, arm length, etc. etc. But mindlessly follow if it makes you feel good. What do I care?

  • I want to go squat now.

  • FETISH @ 1:29

  • when I raise my butt for the hip drive I end up in a good morning position, can anyone help me out?

  • @ddrchild Study the Diesel Crew and EliteFTS squat tutorials instead of this video. Also, don't look down. It makes the bar's weight go forward.

  • @ddrchild IF you end up in a good morning, your concentrating too much on your hips and too little on your back position. im not saying to forget about the hips, but be mentally aware of your back position. one thing you can do is push your traps harder into the bar and squeeze the bar very hard. also take a very deep breath before the descent. another thing, get back on your heels more, push outward with your feet not up, and initiate the squat by sitting back and shrugging ur trapsinto the bar

  • 32 people realized that there 430# globo gym squat was not legititmate.

  • this guy is a genius

  • greg plitt will blow this fat dude out of the water...

  • Mark Rippetoe is the fucking MAN.

  • fuckin hate low bar..

  • BOOM

  • I would kill for that amount of one on one time with Rippetoe.

  • I hear squatting's bad for your knees...

  • @whattheholf91 lol.

  • @whattheholf91 Are you from Planet Fitness? lol :P

  • @whattheholf91 Squats are bad for your knees, if you're using improper technique. That's the whole point of this video. We live in a quad-centric society. By lifting your chest prematurely, you take the power out of your hips/glutes and apply the tension to your quads and knees. If you're taking the full weight of what should be a complete lower body workout and putting it squarely on the knees, you will destroy them.

  • @PorkChamber

Tell that to Glenn Pendlay. Oh yeah, Pendlay's produced more successful lifters than Rippetoe ever will.

  • @Draykid Show me where Pendlay says you shouldn't do squats and your comment will make sense. In the Pendlay 5x5 for beginners, he schedules squats on days 1 and 3. Were you just trolling Rippetoe vids to tell us all about your hard-on for Pendlay?

  • @PorkChamber

Uhhh, are you retarded? Pendlay has his guys do Olympic style squats- squats which are quad-dominant in nature, with a lot more knee flexion than hip flexion. In other words, Riptoad has people do LOW BAR squats, and Pendlay has his guys do HIGH BAR squats. In other words, you seem to have completely and totally missed the point of my comment. Which, in case you don't know by now (seems likely), is that Pendlay would seem to fundamentally disagree with you.

  • @Draykid Okay, my bad. I thought you were commenting on squats in general and didn't realize you were making this a High vs. Low argument. If you aspire to be an Olympic lifter, high bar is obviously the way to go. Pendlay has it right, there. Practicing low bar doesn't improve strength needed to do high bar lifts, but high bar practice does help in strength for low bar lifts, according to Pendlay. But we're watching low bar coaching and the comment was about knees. Not which is better.

  • can someone please point out the main differences between no hip drive and hip drive in layman terms as i could not really find any differences between the two cheers

  • @leeming68 You look forward and keep your chest up the whole time, not looking down, and contract your glutes and hamstrings to stand up, instead of bending and contracting your back. This prevents injury.

Ripp's guys negate the benefits of this because they try to do low bar squats ass to grass as if they were an Olympic high bar squat, instead of to parallel like a low bar squat should. So they do a good morning out of the squat and aren't very erect.

  • inb4 shitstorm from diehards he's not the fucking holy grail, fantastic coach but not the word of the lord.

  • god he teaches horrendous squatmorinings,

watch elitefts "so you think you can squat?" for good tekkers.

  • @thegreathistorian7 lol boxsquatting 5 inches above parallel and "adding" 50 pounds to his squat.

  • @inoxx lol guess you did not watch it haha

  • Is someone going to do a "drive that ass up" and "struttin' that ass" mashup for me or what? Get on this.

  • wow, mark rippetoe sure is fat

  • He nearly did a good morning with one of those.

  • Comment removed

  • I use hip drive but I would never force my butt up to early after almost tearing my disk accidentally going into a good morning from the squat. Since then, I keep my upper torso up a bit more but still use hip drive. Different people are built differently so one size does not really fit all. I will say these tips, with some caution and practice, are solid.

  • Crossfit t-shirt lulz

  • So you think you can squat

  • The truth about low-bar squat:

    rookiejournal . com / low-bar-squats-and-gomad-suck-and-will-give-you-a-big-butt.html

  • Using hip drive and face down I always end up good morning and it forces me to lean forward.

@ 4:22 this dude is also kinda good morning.

    How does one overcome this?

  • Comment removed

  • The way Rippetoe touches that guy makes me uncomfortable.

  • @awesomeninjahacker Yeah lol me too.

  • "now bounce" lol

  • i hurt my lower back when doing squats in the gym yesterday and ive realised im doing it all wrong fml lol. Damn I wish Rippertoe could teach me how to do em properly. Its hard to practice this with a bad back.

  • You say a word and he will hit you on the lower back :) Its better to be quite when working out with him.

  • lower faggot

  • wish i had rippetoe to fix my squat

  • Rippetoe = pimp

  • That kid is rounding his back

  • i'm impressed by how patient Rippetoe is. he must seem like he's giving too much information, but there are a few points about the movement that the kid is getting wrong. but instead of overwhelming the kid with too much info at once, Rippetoe gives him 1 or 2 points to work on at a time.

it's difficult to be patient like that.

  • dem bent wrists

  • 1:05 LMAO

  • This is how a nice safe squat is done.

    Great video.

    More upright stance=knees forward.

    NOT good.

And hip drive is the way to go.

Utilize core strength, especially the obliques.

When the core strength is exhausted the legs will come into play and only then.

And never use a belt, let your natural strength do the lift and your core get stronger.

Caution though:Do not force yourself lower than your flexibility will allow.

It will get better with time.

  • @christosswc fuck off faggot

  • @christosswc i dont see how the focus here can be on hip drive rather than the hip mobility this kid is lacking. i think the real problem here is taking a kid who can't do a proper bodyweight full squat and putting him under a bar.

  • @christosswc This is how a powerlifting squat is done.

Powerlifters tend to have a certain arrogance about them, like their way is the correct way. It's not, it's just the way to lift more weight within competition rules. There are other ways just as correct, it's just a matter of the exercise's goal. There's a reason why you won't find an olympic lifter or a jumper squatting like this.

  • I'm a bit confused on Rip's advice. There are numerous videos of elite Olympic lifters, back squatting BIG weights, ass to calves, and their upper bodies are nearly upright. Search in YouTube "Chinese lifters squatting", and you'll see what I mean.

  • @mrkitanai1 He is talking about low-bar SQ. What he says stays true for the low-bar SQ which is hit in general. High-bar ATG all the way or you are a pussy.

  • gotta work on the buttwink

  • why the hell is he telling him to look down.. what horrible form, when you keep head looking up, it forces the chest to spread up and out, putting maximum tension on all muscles of the leg, *quads hamstrings calves and gluteus)

look how his back arches when he does his *hip drive* this will cause so many injuries,,,, if any beginner watches this video please erase every thing you just saw it will kill you!

  • @fuzzychangsta

hes telling him to look down so his neck is in a more natural position because when you look up ur sort of hyperextending your neck and THAT can cause a neck injury, Also he was just focusing specifically on the hip drive, not the entire squat. His book clearly states so keep your back extended and a slight arch in your lower back.

  • @corycoryinthehouse

yeah i was a little confused at first of the purpose of the video untill i saw your comment, the hip drive is more of an olympic technique however, so this video should not be quoted "fixing the squat"

hip drive is essential in the power clean and snatch but in a squat not as much...

and as for beginners watching this video if you tell them to look down, when coming up their back is gonna look like a rolly polley thats all im saying

  • @fuzzychangsta As a beginner, I'm thinking he JUST wanted him to do that only to drive the point home that he needs to drive from the hips... most of the time, he still did the squats facing straight forward...

  • @fuzzychangsta Your an Idiot, Unlike you who has an unseen resume...Mark Rippetoe is one of the leading lifting experts in the world. You would know that if you knew what lifting is. Ask any pro powerlifter about Mark Rippetoe and they would be happy he was their trainer.

  • @The2010DC Self proclaimed. There is no pedigree really.

  • @The2010DC Most Elite powerlifters think Rippetoe is a has-been that hasn't kept up with the science of lifting. As of right now Rippetoe is a joke among the powerlifting community. Years ago his knowledge of biomechanics was top notch, but he has been passed up and his day is over.

  • @shawn06m1 Did not know that, thanks for the clear up. He cant be that far behind though right?

  • @The2010DC He is pretty far behind, he still considers biomechanics and physiology to be seperate, when most Elite powerlifters now a days consider them one unit to achieve maximal power. Plus if you look at how he teaches the squat it is almost in two parts, when it should be one. Not to take away what he has done for the sport "Starting Strength" was an excellent book, it's just outdated now

  • @shawn06m1

Except I don't think Rippetoe coaches powerlifting? I just bought his book, and read through the first chapter about the squat.

He says that powerlifting squat is totally different to the squat he teaches, he explains how the powerlifting squat is all about lifting more weight, not nessacarily being stronger.

Same with other exercises such as bench, he specifically states that he does not teach a powerlifting bench press because they are two different things.

  • @shawn06m1

Any good squatting videos that is up to date?

  • @DjiEnn Try "so you think you can squat", it is filmed at Elite in London, OH. It is instructed by Matt Wenning a former World Record holder in the squat

  • @shawn06m1 are you a powerlifter? i don't think so, but you just sound like a nobody bashing on someone like rippetoe... he is not outdated for me, his tips are great for developing functional strength! :o powerslifters can say what they want, but i'd rather lift 300 and lift them correctly and get results for what i need than lifting 450 wrong and just for the sake of it

  • @alejandrothefader Actually I am a powerlifter, I also have a 700lb raw squat at a bw of 250. And you don't put that kinda weight on your back and squat it wrong, and the way Rippetoe is teaching the squat is outdated. You have proven your current knowledge by your previous statement, a squat is a purely functional movement, you can function at a weak 300lbs and I will function at my level

  • Terrible form...

  • This is very help me with my squat. Thank you, timdonahey, for video. And thanks for Mark Rippetoe, of course.

  • 24 crossfitters watched this vid. but seriously what did people not like about this?

  • hence why he's still a fatass

  • That rough guy is my idol. i wish i'd be as dumb/confident when i'm older as him

  • 24 people curl in the squat rack

  • DRAIVE YAH AYSEE

  • RIP is just checking out his ass, prepare your anus

  • He's a dousche, but he sure knows what the hell he's talking about

  • 23 people do 1/4 squats

  • driiiive your ass up, just driiive your ass up, nooww, dont drive your ass up at the expense of standing upp, finish standing upp, finish standing upp, two more, driiive ok? driiiive your ass

  • This doesn't look right. It seems like Rippetoe wants to put more emphasis on hips, lower-back and glutes while leaving quadriceps and hamstrings out of the squat.

  • @DimebagVision He is doing a beginner seminar showing trainees where they need to drive first. That is why he keeps touching the guy on his lumbar. He wants him to push his hips up first. The trainee wants to lift his chest so he is teaching him not too. Once the hips come up the back will come up and straighten at the end but he isn't teaching that yet. Teach one thing at a time. This is hip drive. It's pretty clear.

  • i agree with this but if you dont lift through the chest at the same time doesnt the lower back end up taking 100 % of the load at the end of the lift ?

  • @kirkoswald21 I may be wrong but It might be negated by the fact that it's a low bar squat? Doing such exaggerated hip drive would probably injure you with a high bar oly squat.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

  • @adamvandyke2 Good point, i didnt notice how far down his back the barbell was.,

  • M'kay

  • Aren't not the wrist spoze to be straight? Just sayin'

  • @onegaisti Yes, wrists should be straight. However, in coaching you find that correcting one thing at a time is enough for the novice trainee. For example, had Rip corrected the wrists, we'd find that the guy would forget about driving his hips up. Then Rip would correct the hips and the guy's wrists would bend.

One thing at a time, that's how coaching is done. Begin with the most important stuff first, and since the squat is a hip exercise not a wrist exercise, look at the hips first.

  • @greenwithagun Good, I just had to make sure. I'm no pro either.

  • correct me if i'm wrong but the bar is too far down on his back no? i mean shouldnt it be directly aligned with your feet over your center of gravity?

  • @snatcherofpeachs it's a low bar squat. bar rests on back of delts and feet are wider apart.

  • i find going atg makes it easier to drive with the hips you don't have to think about it it just happens

  • Maybe I'mn confused, but isnt that teaching promoting the lifter coming up butt-first?? I thought you WEREN"T supposed to do that?? I thought it was one uniform motion, and if you come up butt--first like that then you under-use the glutes and overload the back?? Can anyone enlighten me please??

  • @blingzip

did you miss the "you kill your hamstring's tension" thing?

  • @Mahassiah ??? I guess so....don't know what you're talking about.

  • Clearly this guy squatting is not an expert or is fairly new. Obviously he will have some technique problems and not be flexible enough to get LLLLLOOOOOOWWWWWW

  • i likes boys

  • I don't care how much of a "god" Riptoe is, this guy is going to have major lower back issues with all that butt-wink going on.

  • @ds1973a You're an idiot whose knows nothing of exercise.

  • @livingdeadmoose Uh no. I'm someone who's had back issues because of trying to go too low and having the wink issue. It's fine when you're in your 20's but not so good in your late 30's.

  • @ds1973a You can do this style of squat into your 50's, I've seen plenty of olds dudes at my gym squat like this. You only hurt yourself if you don't use correct form. You obviously made a mistake. But it's a huge myth that only young guys can lift like this.

  • @ds1973a I'm 50 and still squat deep. I'll hit 700 early next year. No back or knee issues. Many of the great lifters in the world are over 40.

  • @efeldman1165 That's inspiring!! Wow!

  • his grip is terriblle...

  • @Jograndable he's teaching the kid slowly; im sure he'll correct the grip later

  • @vccmax

well, ofc he noticed it. but isnt the grip more elementary than the hip drive. you can squat well without a hip dirve but how can u do a proper squat when ur upper back isnt tight cuz ur grip sucks?

  • Just like that.........

As he said in the DL video, "That's all there is to it."

  • "drive your ass" lmao!

  • isn't the way the guy is doing it bad for your back?

  • @TownPiligan No

  • @TownPiligan No it's not, as long as you keep good form.

  • somewhere down there is a raging homosexual

  • at 3:45 he gets out of the camera view so he can jerk it

  • God that southern twang just drive me crazy. I'd take his whole throbbing cock down my throat and gladly swallow every last drop.

    No homo.

  • @scooter4LYF lol, misc?

  • @scooter4LYF LOL WOW

  • @scooter4LYF wtf?

  • @scooter4LYF most hetero thing ever said

  • he comes off harsh. but he gets the job done.

  • @kertcobainSA Harsh? Lol, all my past coaches were demons compared to Ripptoe.

  • How much weight is on that bar?

  • We should all agree that there are hundreds of styles of squatting and that this is only one of them. Personally, I agree with his concept of hip drive. I do not condone looking downwards, but I am not Mark Rippetoe and do not have the experience he has. People should try different squats and find out what works for them, but a few general points will always be true...IMO...squat deep, push hard.

  • That's some funky lookin' butt motion going on there...

  • @daluke61

haha, you are right. a good trainer once said that the squat is like doggystyle. when youre going down you think of being the woman and when youre going up you think of being the man :D at least, this picture makes you use your hips... :P

  • rippletits is so dreamy <3

    no homo

  • Just driiiiiiive your ass up! Tappppp it in! Tap tap taparoo!

  • @1:00 No homo

  • This is equivalent to doing squats with satan.

  • @DangerVanGorilla hhahahhaha

  • if rip tells me to look down, and not up in a squat i guess that means i gotta start looking down

  • RIPPLETITS IS SOOO SHITTY. WHO WANTS BIG LEGS I MEAN OMG REALLY?? DO MORE CURLS SO IT LOOKS LIKE YOU ACTUALLY WORK OUT

  • @2312marshall trollolol

  • continue the drive with this insertion

    ...thats what she said

  • his form isnt good, he sahouldnt be teaching him to look down.

  • Its all about driving your butt!

  • You know why his 3rd set was the best? Because Zep is playing

  • Scooby's who you'd go to for power? What's he done that's impressive? Who's he trained? Seriously, name me one person whose power is world class as a result of Scooby. The man throws away egg yolks ffs.

  • So... If Rippetoe punches the top of my ass it'll fix my squats? :D

  • The Triforce of Fitness:

    Scooby1961 = Power

    Mark Rippetoe = Wisdom

    Jack LaLanne = Courage

  • @PalerLaze

    scooby = power?

    what

  • @tehmini I know that comment was stupid ignore it lol.

  • @tehmini Scooby1961
