Why would Claw need to get rid of his claw? It's doesn't make much sense to have a move that detaches his claw.

No, he doesn't. All it does it lower his reach and priority when he loses the claw. Throwing it away is purely to taunt the other guy.

He does more damage without his MASK, but takes more damage. He only has less reach without the claw.
