i read the books haha. I think that master chief and the spartens that were with him were the first one. many of them died. In one of the missions the master chief sent his sparten to protect some thing and the were all killed. master chief thought that he gave them the easy job but he didnt.

Actually, the Spartan 2 project was funded for 300 children, only 75 were picked and only 33 made it through the augmentation. 3 spartans went missing behind enemy lines, another 4 died in combat, and 25 Spartans died at reach, 2 in orbit and 23 on the ground.

The Spartans in Halo Wars are Spartan IIs, which is what the Chief is. The game wasn't based around the Chief though, that's why he's never referenced, and that that game is early in the Human-Covenant War.
