I always thought there was something amiss with Howard, I was only about 10 at this time.
Now I see a fully-grown 30 year old man finally trying to get away from his mummy's apron strings and chanting "momma look look momma momma look look momma look".
I hope she spanked his bottom, it's a terrible song, and he just wasn't ready to move away from home.
@apk1215 The British use to "liaise" two vowels with an R sounding sound. It's quite common, you'll hear that a lot in the UK. For example: ANNA AND MICHAEL >>> ANNAR AND MICHAEL
"Anyway If I Was, You've Gotta Let Me Be The One ..."
An album full of lush songs and lyrical content. Loved the beat when I was in my 20's .... now in my 40's and I'm in love with them all over again listening to those precious words full of spiritual genius.
I wonder what became of him? Surely he is still a songwriter somewhere in the music industry? Maybe teaching music? It would be so great to see him make a comeback!
@TheOceans674eva interestingly he is re-releasing his first two albums with some added tracks, and doing a US and UK tour next year. He's playing at the O2...
yes it was adressed to us - '80'ies kids, but it still rules, still thrilling, for young generation too, I guess, because there were greatest times in music
Same to me... he is a great and very under-rated 80´s artist! This song suited to us young persons of those times...as i remember! ;o) And that look... funny funny! :o)))
God I wish I'd listened close to these lyrics and learned this lesson when this song was first released. I regret living my life for my parents' approval.
Children are NOT property, there are boundaries that are healthy and those are knowing WHOM is our OWNER and who is OUR ruler, just because souls come from us we do not necessarily determine these, all we could do is hope the best.
All have to make choices, but their OWN choices, and many times choices do not necessarily coincide with the choices that our elders faced in their times. Not all members of a household have the same politics, and they do not necessarily have to have YOUR Politica.
The look I described last night is that abject fear mixed with exhilaration one feels when defying an absolute authority, simultaneously incredulous at his own actions, yet dismayed at how powerless he really is. I think that's what Howard is trying to convey across the board here..
I heard this song on a tape that was mixed by Peter Slaghuis ( Hithouse ).This tape was given to his brother in law in 1987...The 12 inch mix, on the tape, was genious!!
CRACKRZZ: I haven't read down thru the comments yet, but I wonder if anyone has asked about Howard's strange expression at the beginning of the vid, and at various places throughout. Knowing him, it's a look of fearful incredulity, as in, "I can't believe I'm talking to me mum in this manner!"
And don't be fooled, CRACKRZZ, nearly EVERYTHING HoJo does, whether in video or audio form, means something. This video is full of imagery that he's trying to convey. It's up to the viewer to decode it.
This reminds me of when I was in 6th form at School and I was off ill with flu for 2 weeks and this song was on the radio all the time. I love Howard Jones, love his hairstyle and love this era. Music today is SOOO dull and boring. Really miss the 80s
I'd forgotten about this one. Great stuff! They never play much Howard Jones on the radio. In fact, there's a lot of great stuff they never play. It's just the same old hits time and time again!
I was there too never left the area went to Littlehampton school, now live in Rustington, them were great days, everyone practically lived in Smarts lol
I was at this video shot - I got his autograph. It was on Littlehampton beach at Butlins (later became Smarts) funfare amusement park quite late one night 1984 (?)
Well ive only got into Howard recently thanks to a friend, and seen him live and i didnt have a clue really, but hes absolutely amazing! Ever seen him live?
Does anyone know which american movie from either 70s or 80s that quote is from? I remember in the late 80s when my best friend & I just watched a movie on TV, and suddenly he just jumped up and shouted "I know that phrase" and started to search through his vinyl LPs and actually found it. I was very impressed to say the least:)
"Honey, I think Audrey's a little mature for you. No I don't think she's mature I think she's nice. Hey mom when are we going"
Thanks for the great quality video - I was a big HJ fan, and this song really spoke to me when it was in the charts. Now that I am a mother, it's good to hear it again from another perspective.

Commercially in the US, it's available on the 1986 HoJo EP "Action Replay." I have a slew of 12" singles of this from various countries, too.
I bet eBay has quite a few. Check there.

Just a minor nitpick... the video has nothing to do with the song lyrics. Must have been freezing out there.
