Part of the natural process is for predators take down the weaker members of a herd. Left to theire own devices (without human interference) nature tends to balance things out. Predators can't live on grass. They need to eat too,

The lions are really taking chances dealing with a full grown cape buffalo. It's dangerous. On the plus side, if they make the kill the pride gets to eat pretty well for a while. Sentiment has no place in the wild.
