The problem with Yma Sumac is that she sang mostly weird stuff, and most of it seemed to just be a pretext for her to sing really high and low at some point. She could have been a lot more successful if she had been more mainstream and spent less time on the vocal acrobatics.

Wikipedia claims she was a soprano. She actually was a contralto as you can clearly hear in the early part of the recording at 0:30. She was able to expand her vocal range upwards. You can hear her change from contralto to soprano at 0:53.
The Black Eyed Peas used some of this in a song they did a few years ago called "Hands Up" from their "Elephunk" album! I love the mix of old & new sounds together!!!

@BrightonBeachBabe Actually her voice is a result of being born and raised in very high altitudes. Of course it is also a very musical culture and inhereted genetics play a part. Not to say every person born in her area can sing like her, but it certaintly allowed that to happen. It had nothing to do with anything supernatural. Biological chance gave her the capacity and experience gave her the character she is known for.

Yma Sumac passed away on November 1, 2008, aged 86 at an assisted-living home in Los Angeles. She had been diagnosed with colon cancer only nine months earlier.
On May 6, 2006, Sumac flew to Lima, where she was presented the Orden del Sol award by Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo and the Jorge Basadre medal by the Universidad Nacional Mayor

She is unique!!! I understand she said that her first audience was the birds of her Andes. And she atribute her voice because when you are born there in the highest montains your lungs are wider and the air is pure.
She has the purest voice and the highest ever... Marvelous!

My friend, from Romania. Ima Zumac was Peruvian, she spoke Spanish, as her native tongue. if you have no knowledge of Spanish , then you're fucked up..
