  • what do u use for the detail? do you still just use paper mache or something else

  • Do you use watered down black paint? It seems like it wipes off to easy to just be regular paint.

  • This is my new hobby.

  • @sweeterthancandtdeco he uses bed sheets dipped in mache glue stuff for the wings and his final layer of "skin"

  • Wow this is amazing!! I'm attempting to make a paper mache dragon myself so if you don't mind I have a few questions.

What's the dry time between each layer or paper and what's the layer you put on last along with the wings? Was it a different material?

Last thing, for coloring do you use acrylic paint?

  • damn, you... you're too awesome. I love you (and your work) <3 I like paper mache and I adore such... serious works <3 amazing

  • good

  • 2 fino.

  • Dan i think your work is fantastic . I am also makeing a paper mache dragon . It is comeing alone well . I just want to give a huge thanks ,for everything u have done

  • You're badass. You make decent money doing this Dan?

  • Wow! I look at paper mache projects and they are always so simple and child like. Finely something new and fresh! your imagination is your only limit with ANYTHING!

Ps that was a really cool technique you used painting black over it...

  • @funk3rocker

Thank you for the kind words. I really appreciate it. I think paper mache is an under-untilized, under-rated medium. I'm happy that you see the potential.

    Take care

    Dan

  • Oh wow that is amazing, Iv been working on making a dragon, but I am not nearly as good as you are. That looks absolutely fantastic.

  • @ABgarden

Thank you for the nice comment! I really appreciate it.

    Dan

PS. I've been doing paper mache for 35+ years. It's all practice. Good luck on your project!

  • @DanMonsterMan Thank you! working on the wing currently=D

  • @ABgarden

    excellent. Have fun!

  • wow you really are good :) I am so excited to buy your book. Thank you very much for show us how you did it.

PD. Do you have facebook ? I would like to follow your proyects really are amazing.

  • @nuttplate12

Hi there. Thank you for the nice compliment. If you want to see projects being made from beginning to end, check out my blog, PaperMacheBlog (dot com). I have more on my site, GourmetPaperMache (dot com). I also have a Facebook page. Search for Gourmet Paper Mache.

    Good luck on your projects.

    Dan

  • Your Art style reminds me of Jim Henson! It is so creative and detailed! You inspire me to make my own sculptures :)

  • @foreverqtpie

Thank you for the nice comment! I think the best compliment an artist can get is having inspired someone else to do art. So I really appreciate your nice remarks.

    Take care

    Dan

  • These are amazing! All of your sculptures are beautiful artwork. The blackwashing is a great technique, it adds so much detail. My art teacher showed me these, and we are starting a "paper mache monster" project inspired by these. You have a great talent :)

  • @georgiapeachXD

Thank you GeorgiaPeach! (love your login) I really appreciate the nice comment. It is really nice of you to write. Thank your teacher for me. And let me know if you have questions. You can contact me through my site too, GourmetPaperMache (dot com).

  • @DanMonsterMan

have you ever used mod roc??

    i heard that its good

  • @Bloodygeek1

Hi there. I've never used mod roc. But I have also heard of it. I might have to get some and experiment a bit.

    Dan

  • @DanMonsterMan

    cool

ive heard its makes papper mache easyer and more solid

  • @Bloodygeek1

I would use it for horns or big teeth or tusks. I'm sure it's like cement when it's dry. That's great for parts of things. But I couldn't imagine making a large dragon with it. It would be like manipulating clay. Then it would be really heavy and require lots of sanding. So for parts of things I think it would be great. Not sure about making entire pieces with it. Just thought I'd mention it.

    Take care

    Dan

  • @DanMonsterMan

    very true.

I just wanna thank you for making papper mahe an art instead of somthing kids do

    you rock man

  • @Bloodygeek1

You are welcome. And thank you!

    Dan

  • thats crazy work never seen something done in paper mache like that awesome

  • @SparkofDarkness1

Thank you! That's very nice of you to say. I really appreciate you taking the time to write.

Thank you! That is very nice of you to comment.

    Dan

  • cool but wish you could of slow down some

  • @stevensonmetal

If I slowed it down the video would be really long. This is meant to be for entertainment only. I do have slower, instructional videos on my site, GourmetPaperMache (dot com) if you are interested in my techniques.

    Take care

    Dan

  • If you don't mine me asking what's that wipe-off black paint substance you used for the shading?

Also this was beastly. Good job.

  • @UncleShoveit

    Hi there,

I don't mind you asking at all. It's actually just black paint with some water added. I paint it on and then wipe it off before it's dry. I've coined the process "blackwashing". It really brings out the details.

    Dan

PS. Thank you for the very nice comment.

  • i would really love to see u make a full size animal of some sort!

  • @stewdemonkey like a big animal,

  • @stewdemonkey

I also think it would be fun. I've made some pretty large beasts in my time. Problem with big things is they take up so much room. I have an alien fighter in my studio that is bigger than I am. He's really hard to move. So he just sits until I have a show.

    Take care

    Dan

  • awesome!!!

  • @joe49997

    Thank you!

    Dan

  • You are an amazing artist! This was inspiring and fun to watch! Thank you for sharing :)

  • @LaakeAbstracts

You are very kind to take the time to write. I really appreciate your comment. Thank you!

    Dan

  • AGAIN EXCELLENT!

  • @ccz1826598

I'm glad you like the videos. And thanks for taking the time to write.

    Dan

  • wats that white thing u put on the dragon for his skin called and were do u get it?

  • @ven0m34

That is just cloth (old bed sheet) dipped in white glue. If you are interested in the process, check out my site, GourmetPaperMache (dot com) and my blog, PaperMacheBlog (dot com). I have instructional videos and instructions on those sites.

    Dan

  • your dragon is so beautiful! I'd like to have one on my balcony)

  • @chateaudelamer

Thank you for the nice comment! I'm glad you like this dragon, although I just finished one I like much more. You can see it on Youtube. It's called "Paper Mache Sea Dragon" if you are interested.

    Take care

    Dan

  • That are made teeth?

which is the white coating before painting the dragon?

excuse my bad English, thanks from Mexico

  • @88Talbain88

Hola.

    Dan

  • @DanMonsterMan Also use google translator.

Thank you very much! You are very friendly, your work inspires me

you're a great artist. Greetings from Mexico.

  • I have too often tried but my dragon like a cow steet owja and what is da black stuff that you always gain last ophet

  • @pdg40800

That is black paint that is watered down. I paint it on first then wipe it off before it is dry. Keep working on your dragon. Patience is the key.

    Dan

  • @DanMonsterMan

    ok thanks

  • WOW just WOW! can u make a lion and post the vid by wednesday? i have a project i nid to make a paper mache "lion" and i dont know how to do it ,it will be passed next week pls help!!! thank you!

  • @TiAmAtRiA07

Hello there. Of course I would not be able to make a lion by next Wednesday. It takes time and effort to make a project like that. I just have to say that a project like that is probably unrealistic in that time frame. It takes about three days for the paper mache balls to dry. Sorry about that.

    Dan

By the way, I do have a video of me making a little lion cub (along with a dragon "cub"). It's callled "Parallel Paper Mache". It is on Youtube. Check it out.

  • @DanMonsterMan i saw it THANK YOU!!! :D

  • I love you, i mean this! You are well appreciated!!!

  • @jcdoris

What a sweet comment! You are too kind. Thank you. I'm very flattered that you like the videos and the art.

    Dan

  • i apreciate all ur time on this and i love ur art take care too and i hope u make like a bear head or somthing next!!!!!!!!! i appriciate it

  • @SuperSteelers65

Thank you again. You inspire me to make more. I just uploaded a video tonight. It's my best dragon yet. Hope you see it. It's called "Paper Mache Seadragon"

    Take care

    Dan

  • This is an amazing sculpture! You're very good at what you do. How much does a finished paper mache sculpture of this size weigh?

  • @weirdmisty

Thank you for your nice comment! This project probably weighs two or thee pounds.

    Take care

    Dan

  • I think all of your pieces are absolutely fantastic. I'm high school student and I'd like to give paper macheing a go, so can you tell me a good project to start on? Also, is that masking tape you put on over the newspaper? and if so, how do you make it so smooth?

  • @artguy96

    Hi there,

Thank you for the nice comment. For a beginning project I would try making a basic monster. Can't go wrong (no one will tell you that the lump is in the wrong place). You will learn the techniques making that. From there the sky is the limit. For more info, check out my site, GourmetPaperMache (dot com) and especially my blog, PaperMacheBlog (dot com). You can see projects being built with commentary there.

    Yes, that is masking tape.

    Take care

    Dan

  • @DanMonsterMan Thank you for the advice, also, what kind of paints do you use? is there any way paper could replace the cloth layer too, or is that a must? are there any good substitute for those glass eyes?

sorry to pepper you with all these questions, I guess I'm just very curious and excited! Its great to have found a new project!

  • @artguy96

I just use latex paints. There are many paper mache techniques. I invented the cloth mache. It's what I do. Most paper mache artists don't use the cloth at all. You can use anything round for eyes. They don't have to be glass.

Good luck with your new venture.

    Dan

  • hey I made a papier mache work and when it dries smelled disgusting. What I can do that does not happen again? you are a great artist!!! you have the best videos in youtube bye and please answer.

  • @gregoC13

    Hi there,

Thank you for the nice note and kind words. Your project must not have dried completely. Paper mache paste will not smell good if it doesn't dry fairly quickly. But the smell should go away once it it thoroughly dried. If you can, put it in the sun, or in a window with sun coming through or over a heat vent to get it really dry.

Good luck on your art work!

    Dan

  • also, how do you make the teeth? what are you using? and did you have to bake them at all?

  • @Dezi3110

I use Fimo for teeth, but there are many other products like Super Sculpey. It is polymer clay you bake in the oven.

    Dan

  • THAT IS AMAZING!! I have been thinking about trying to use paper mache as my next medium and because of this video I now know I definitely want to try it out.

  • @Dezi3110

Thank you for your nice comment! And yes, you definitely should try this medium out. It's great.

    Good luck on your venture.

    Dan

  • wow I rally like it =) !!!

  • @aupaysdesmangas

I'm very happy you like the dragon. Thank you for commenting.

    Dan

  • what is the white paper you were using

  • @evilB300

In the end I use cloth dipped in white glue. That is what you are seeing.

    Dan

  • where did you learn and how?

  • @jessemaik

I used what I remembered from elementary school as a start. Of course over the years I developed different variations of the technique. I learned by doing.

    Thank you for your interest.

    Dan

  • awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @jessemaik

    Thank you!

    Dan

  • Awesome stuff! I'm an artist as well, so I know the work it takes to get project completed!! I give you credit for making the video as well! I know the video alone took hours of editing!

  • @MrJustinMiner

Thank you for the very flattering comment! It's especially appreciated coming from another artist. Like you said, you understand the time and effort involved. Good luck with your art. Making art makes the world a better place I think.

    Take care

    Dan

  • Wow this is really amazing

How long did this project take?

  • @TDHReviews

    Hello,

Thank you for the nice comment. A dragon like this would take a couple weeks working an hour here and an hour there. There is drying time between steps.

    Take care

    Dan

PS. If you are interested, you can see more details of making dragons etc on my blog, PaperMacheBlog (dot com).

  • whats the paste that u use?? i have a project in my dance class N i have to make a bug based off the movie TRON..and i decided to do paper mache...so id be very thankful in knowing wat materials u used in ur vid..thanks

  • @jinxsayonara

I have all the information you need at my blog, PaperMacheBlog (dot com). Good luck!

    Dan

  • @DanMonsterMan

where do you get the eyes (and what are they called) and do you just use white papper to cover the newspapper.

    you are inspirational !!!

my boyfriend tols me papper mache isn't art, and then I showed him this vid......now he sees it our way =D

    thanks man

  • @Bloodygeek1

Thank you for your kind words. I really appreciate it. Those are taxidermy, glass eyes. If you google, "glass eyes" you will find several companies who sell them. I put a "skin" of cloth (old bed sheets) dipped in white glue (like Elmer's). That is the white you are seeing. Good luck on any project you are making. You can see more of the process on my blog, PaperMacheBlog (dot com) if you are interested.

    Take care

    Dan

  • @DanMonsterMan

    thanks man =D

I'll be sure to check out your blogs.

though way do you hallow your stuff out??

  • @Bloodygeek1

I do hollow some out, but only if the project is really large. I just cut a hole and pull out the paper from inside. Then patch with masking tape. Good luck.

    Dan

  • @DanMonsterMan

    why do that??

  • @Bloodygeek1

It's not necessary, but it makes it lighter.

  • @DanMonsterMan

    ok cool

    thanks man!! =D

  • Hi Dan,

your work is absolutely amazing.. its very inspiring.. i have actually bought your books and read them.. i have started yet as i dont know where to get the eyes from.. ive searched online for taxidermists but i was wondering if you know a good website to use.

    Thank you

  • @gemenism

    Hi there,

Thanks for the kind words (and the plug for my books). For eyes, I use vandykestaxidermy (dot com). Good luck. Let me know if you ever have any questions. If you want more detail, I'm currently documenting a dragon build on my blog, PaperMacheBlog (dot com).

  • @folken555

Muchas gracias por sus amables palabras. Realmente lo aprecio.

    Dan

  • I am learning about genes in science class and we got our own dragon dna and we "mated" with other classmates and we are assigned to make our baby dragons. By far the COOLEST video ever!!!!! Love it!!!!!!!!!! So amazing! I have been taking art for 9 years and was so not able to do that. haha ;)

  • @keepurpwsoffmyundrwr

Thank you for the nice comment! I really appreciate it. Your science project sounds fun. Good luck!

    Dan

  • that was sooooooo nice but i wish theere's an explaination for each step

  • @titabarcelona

I do have instructional videos and demonstrations on my blog, PaperMacheBlog (dot com) if you are interested. More information on my site as well, GourmetPaperMache (dot com). Thanks for your nice comment.

    Dan

    Dan

  • 1:05 Goatse!

  • @prick20

I'm sorry, but I don't know what that means.

    Dan

  • dude your work is amazing! every sculpture has like its own personality you know? its like im expecting one of them to wink at me XD, but in your opinion what kind of project should a beginner start off with?

  • @mmmmmwaffles

Hey there (I love your login),

Thank you for the kind words. I always encourage people to start off with a small monster. A monster so that you can't do anything wrong (no such thing as the lump in the wrong place). And you'll learn the techniques by doing that project. As you work you'll get ideas for something more elaborate if you want. It just works that way. Give this medium a try. It's fun and very satisfying.

    Take care

    Dan

  • @DanMonsterMan

    thnx for the info :D

  • Hermoso!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @MrMardesi

    Muchas gracias por el comentario!

    Dan

  • great work... i really love your work.. what are those teeth made up?? is that paper also???

  • one more question does the clay recipe stick to cardboard or do i need to use some glue?

  • @hoboninjas

I'm pretty sure it will stick. She uses toilet paper, Elmer's glue, joint compound, and a small amount of linseed oil (or mineral oil). This will certainly stick to cardboard. Sounds like a great project. Good luck.

    Dan

    GourmetPaperMache (dot com)

  • can someone tell me if i can sand paper mache and paint over it? I made a very complicated car out of cardboard and there are some holes in it, that i want to fill wilth paper mache and then sand it so that it will become smooth before paint. .

  • @hoboninjas

The kind of paper mache I use can't be sanded. I use the paper strip and flour and water paste type of paper mache. But there are paper mache artists who use actual mashed paper type mache which can be sanded. Check out Jonni's paper mache formula. She is at ultimatepapermache (dot com).

    Good luck

    Dan

  • @DanMonsterMan wow thx for the quick reply, and for the tip. Were making RC cars in my highschool engineering class and we can only use cardboard for our outer cover. Im all about aesthetics, so instead of just making bocxcars, i made mine with curves. And it is pretty hard to make a detailed shape with cardboard, but i did it after many hours. Now with your tip i can make it better, and after i airbrush it, it wont look as messy. thx again

  • That is just amazing !!

  • @taniushka332000

Thank you so much for the nice comment! I really appreciate it.

    Dan

    GourmetPaperMache (dot com)

  • what is the white stuff you use for the scales?

  • @zunoman14

That is cloth dipped in white glue. I call the process "cloth mache".

    Dan

    GourmetPaperMache (dot com)

  • Cool...

  • @mrdarklord102

    Thank you for commenting!

    Dan

  • @arteryfuter

Sorry, I meant to say, sounds like you've been making outdoor paper mache too. I do appreciate the cement tip.

  • @arteryfuter

Thank you Arthur! I really appreciate the tip. I'll give it a try. Sounds like you are doing paper mache too. Thanks for commenting.

    Take care

    Dan

  • hey will u sell any of these?

  • @flipflopfloop1

    Hey there,

I do sell some, but they are pretty expensive. They take a lot of time. That's why I encourage people to make a dragon themselves. All kinds of people have done that and love them better than if they'd purchased mine. I have a how-to book showing how to make this exact dragon.

    Just a thought.

    Dan

  • ill send you a pic of my version of your fish so. i bet you have never had a 14 year old's work put up on ur sight lol

  • @stevezillaful

That would be great. And yes, I have had 14 year olds (and younger) post on my site.

    Dan

  • Hi! This is great! I have a question though about the colors.. What paint did you use? And what is the process you did? I can see you painted it with base colors first. And then you added black then wiped it off.. Is that right?

  • @ColorfulGobstoppers

    Hello,

I just used all purpose, water based paint from Home Depot. Any water based paint will work. You are exactly right. I paint with a base color. Then I "blackwash", paint with watered down black and wipe it off before it dries. It really brings out the color.

    Dan

  • @arteryfuter

    Hello Arthur,

It's always nice to meet another paper mache artist. I appreciate your kind words.

Do you have photos of your work anywhere? I'd love to see them.

And thank you for the outdoor suggestion. I have been experimenting myself.

You can always contact me at dan (at) GourmetPaperMache (dot com).

    Dan

  • @ScoobySnacks6624

    Hello there,

Those are strips of an old bed sheet dipped into Elmer's glue. I call that process "cloth mache" and I add it as a "skin". For the paper mache part I just use white flour and water. Nothing more exotic than that.

    Take care

    Dan

    GourmetPaperMache (dot com)

  • I'm seriously considering dropping some money and time into learning how to do this. It looks like a great way to add neat things around the house, and have fun while doing it. Keep the videos comin'.

    -Peter

  • @Denominator90

    Hey Peter,

Well, I'm biased, but I think this medium is worth the time and effort. It is a very satisfying activity. Good luck!

  • @LewieEvans

    Hello Lewie,

Thank you for the nice comments! This dragon probably took about three weeks to make. That's working a couple hours a day. I was filming too, so that was part of the time it took.

    I appreciate the kind words.

    Dan

    GourmetPaperMache (dot com)

  • WOOOOW!

  • @MajorBerto88

    Hi there,

You can do that! I sell a how-to book that shows in in detail how to make this exact dragon. It is this dragon being built in the book. Just visit my site to find out more.

    GourmetPaperMache (dot com)

You should give this medium a try. You will love it.

    Dan

  • one last question xD

when you painted the dragon with paint and it was time to paint it black to make the "burn" effect thingy how did u wipe the black paint out and some stayed there to make that effect??is it black paint or something else?

  • @Sh4dowsUnited

That is just watered down black paint. I call this process "blackwashing". Paint it on, wipe it off before it dries. It brings out the details.

    Dan

  • whats that white stuff u use to cover those leg stuff at 0:19

  • @Sh4dowsUnited

That is cloth dipped in white glue. Makes the project very strong and allows detail you can't get with just paper.

    Dan

  • now this is really fucking hard work

  • @Sh4dowsUnited

lt is definitely time consuming. Thank you for the enthusiastic comment.

    Dan

  • @jonaldization

That is cloth, an old bed sheet torn into strips, dipped into white glue (Elmer's glue, but PVA wood glue works too). I call the process "cloth mache".

I have more information on my site and blog, GourmetPaperMache and PaperMacheBlog (dot com) if you are interested.

  • This was very amazing! Shear talent!!! I love how the colors turned out, and the detail is astonishing! Being an artist myself, I enjoy spectating other people's work, but if it were a real life dragon, do you think it can fly?
