  • hello, not that you could make a tutorial of this song? where you look at all the electric bass.

  • Wow, I haven't seen many people messing around with the fantasia solo in the beginning. I like it!

  • this isnt marilyn manson fight song im guessin

  • no, charles mingus' haitian fight song

  • One of my all-time favorite songs.

What makes Mingus' solo here so great isn't the scale he uses or the complexity of what he plays (it's physically challenging/difficult to play esp. on an upright, but not very complex. he only plays outside of the scale I described before once in 11 minutes,at the end of the intro solo.) It's that he can play the same three or four notes a hundred thousand different ways. Listen to Mingus' phrasings and forget about the other bullshit. Just git it in yr soul.

  • First off, I don't understand how anyone can play this song on an upright, but not on an electric. Doesn't make sense to me.

Second, since there's so much confusion about the scale, here it is: it's a G blues scale with a minor sixth added (G, A#, B#, C#, D, Eb, F, G). he also sticks a major 2nd in there a couple places (A natural).

Nicely done, but could def. be better. Figureout acouplemore of Mingus' phrases and pay attention to the little things he does.

  • I think it is pretty bad ass. I couldnt do it on electric like that. Nice stuff. I am actually playing this song in my big band right now but hella fast. Keep it up.

  • ugh try to learn another scale... endless pentatonic gets very boring very quickly when you just play it through so fast.

my sdvice is to either slow down and try to play more melodic lines or (an even better suggestion), learn some new scales

  • omg... i can do it on upright. sorry.... not bad. i cant play it on electric. you should really learn real jazz harmony though. listen to the way mingus improvises. there are certain elements you are missing. and your technique is aweful. just trying to help. move here to new orleans and play trad for a few years.

  • Well mr Kirknasty why don't you stick up a video of yourself then let us all have a good comment on you

  • lol

  • awesome.. respect for playing that, i wish i could do that ;]

  • love it. shame the sound is so-so. good stuff!

  • very very good, play it a little faster on an upright and it'll be insanely good

  • good job with the tone on that song! sounds almost like an upright!

  • yep all by ear. i kinda got lost in some parts and forgot where i was going but sure it's an alright one. I'll have to stick up some slap/funky shit!!!

  • thanx man,

haitian fight song is one of my fave mingus tunes.

been wonderin how to play this for a while.

to heck with all the nay sayers, sometimes ya gotta let it out.Good Tone, good heart.

    we all can't be Mingus!

  • It's a nice jazz! Pentatonic is the pillar of all music! And the blue notes are "that" thing makes difference on jazz, blues and break songs. Your video contains a lot of nice riffs! The only problem it was the quality of the record.

  • You guys got it mixed up.

There is the Pentatonic scale and there is the Blues scale. The only differens is that the blues scale has the blue note and the Pentatonic does not.

  • hell noo! you can never have too much pentatonic dude! Charles Mingus he was the man!

  • Very nicely done - all by ear?

  • Pepow doesn't know what he's talking about! you can never play too much pentatonic

  • Good performance but a little too much play into pentatonic
