  • did i hear paul mcganns voice at 0:06?

  • Holy moly.

  • Is there a name for the song that plays at the end? So epic.

  • If only the two episodes following this weren't complete kack. Doctor Jesus my arse.

  • I'm 47 and watched Dr.Who nearly all my life. I have to say that if I was asked what's the best clip ever it might very well be this. Though them old Tomb of the Cybermen clip is close.

  • Sir Derek Jacobi is absolutely brilliant. With nothing more than a blank stare he transforms himself from the kindly, avuncular Professor Yana to the cold-blooded deadly Master.

  • Oh no! the master returned!

    BARROWMAN! *shakes fist*

  • You Are Not Alone

    Y.A.N.A

  • gawd I wish Derek Jacobi was the Master longer, he would have been excellent.

  • EPIC!!!!!!

  • probably the best Russel T Davis ever did, only finale without the Daleks, they aren't needed but he always used them except for this story ark nd it paid off

  • Superb episode!!

  • This is a lot of good subtle classic references, such as : 0:03 - Stock audio of Anthony Anelies Laugh, 0:17- Rodger Delgato. 0:12 - New Master

  • You know, I heard people say that Jack should have reacted when Martha said "The Face of Boe" Weirdest thing though is that he does react. What do you want Jack to say? "Face of boe? Wait, that was my nickname! Does this mean I'll be a huge head one day?"

  • he should've stayed as the master. he would've been great

  • One of the best scenes from Doctor Who. Now if only I could find more music like that.

  • Gotta love the "Oh shit" look on the Doc's face when he only suddenly realises that the master is Yana's true identity.

  • Probably my favourite part of this scene is that poor Martha and Jack are trying to avoid being killed and/or eaten by Futurekind, desperately trying to hold the door shut to keep from getting maimed.... and the Doctor's busy having a personal emotional crisis!

Really Doctor, catching up with old school chums while your friends are in mortal (and immortal lol) danger? You should be ashamed of yourself!

Lol kidding. This was beautifully acted on David and Derek's parts.

  • Jacboi did the role too well here.

I screamed with joy as my 13 year old mind was blown. ( I used to watch classic Who growing up before it came back in 2005)

  • it still sends shivers down my spine

  • Utopia just finished on ABC2. This is my favorite bit from this episode. Just perfectly done.

Derek Jacobi was just pure evil at the end. A perfect performance. Wish he could of done more.

  • Loved this scene, the bit where he remembers Roger Delgado's Master gave me goosebumps - Derek Jacobi was brilliant, very evil, and showed that the Master didn't have to be a Delgado or an Ainley, but why, why John Simm??????!!!!

  • I thought he pulled off pure evil quite well, like I'm so evil I don't have to explain how evil I am - I just get on with something evil and amuse myself along the way, much more in line with modern evil where you can manipulate power more in a business suit than a pantomine costume. And no I'm not saying Del Gado or Ainsley are pantomine actors, just that Simm makes a more relevant portrait of contemporary evil.

  • Anyone know what the name is of that background music from about 1:05 on?

  • its called "Yana" or "All The Strange Strange Creatures"

  • Roger Delgado & Anthony Ainley both rule !! The new actor just didn't seem very menacing. Even Eric Roberts in the 1996 movie was menacing. Wearing dark clothing helps.

  • Why is that in the new sereis they always have such brilliant music over such awful babbled dialogue? In the old series they didn't have to spell everything out in such an annoying way, it's been totally dumbed down. Here's hoping that Steven Moffat and Matt Smith make the new series worthy to carry the name Doctor Who again.

  • you have to remember RTD wanted to aim this at a more modern audience, not many people were into the whole Sci-Fi thing so by turning it into a sort of dram (Sci-Fi drama???) it would attract a wider range of fans to gain popularity, also the dialogue does help to build the tension to when we see YANA/The Master open the watch...

  • The Derek Jacobi version of the Master was more of what the classic Master of the past was like. The John Simm version of the Master is a totally different version for a new generation of Dr Who fans - still loved them both anyway!

  • last 10 seconds gave me goosebumps

  • those eyes he is truly the master

  • martha: 'Thing about the face of boe said.'

    jack: 'hey?'

    martha: 'His dying words...'

    jack: 'what...?'

  • "StraightEdgeUK"...I don't think Capt Jack WOULD have reacted to the mention of The Face of Boe at that time as he was in the thick of things as to helping save the humans of that period (trying to escape to Utopia) and also in the thick of it as Martha explained to The Doctor about her realizations on Professor Yana, which seemed to be taking some root with The Doctor as she told him of her thoughts.

  • Surely Jack would have reacted upon Martha mentioning the face of boe?

    Still, fantastic episode.

  • Jack's too busy staring at the Doc to notice anything that Martha says. <3

  • @StraightEdgeUK not if he isn't yet. he becomes it in his future

  • @OmegaShenron6574 Jack/Face of Boe must exist at the same time, yet differently ratioed. Jack is aware of the UTOPIA event, and later as Face of Boe, serves a warning...

It would seem that an incarnation of the Master prepared the events at UTOPIA as Prof YANA, via a form of time travel. How could YANA know to find the Doctor's hand and utilize it at a later time?

I would suspect some form of of worm-hole effect or similar event.

    Just curious.

  • @upallhours9 its called bad writing.

jack didn't know about the utopia event. but Boe did. so when he met the doctor without rose he knew it was close.

as for the master thing. well he is a genius. plans ahead. usually.

    the rest is plot holes

  • @OmegaShenron6574 I get it, I just think about things too much, sometimes. :P

  • @OmegaShenron6574 Jack was still known as "The Face of Boe" when he was a kid, though. He says it at the end of the season.

  • @TheKip349 yeah but not as the entity, as a poster child

  • @OmegaShenron6574 He'd still remember the name though

  • @TheKip349 since when has RTD ever explained his plot holes.

  • @StraightEdgeUK Only if she'd have finished her sentence XD

  • Jacobi IS the Master and always will be. He only other actor I wanted to see in that role is Terrence Stamp.

But Simm has grown on me after a couple re-viewings. I hated him the first time because I felt so cheated when Jacobi regenerated.

Simm brings a new energy to the role.

  • Undeniably the best of the Russel T Davies cliffhangers, although I'll never know why he chose to get an amazing actor like Derek J and then get rid of him just like that. John Simm was a good master, but Jacobi is just perfect for the role. Why Russel why?!!

  • He obviously asked Mr Jacobi because he, as a very well-regarded actor, would bring in some major respect as regards to the role of "The Master". It worked.

  • I think Jacobi only wanted to be in one episode as much as he enjoyed it.

  • I wasn't commenting on the amount of episodes Mr Jacobi had been in. I think he served his purpose as to the gravitas of the role of the lead-up to the reintroduction of The Master which was, in my opinion, superlatively played by John Simm.

Mr Jacobi was primarily playing the human role of Professor Yana and the turning-back into TimeLord mode. He played his role excellently but not to the detriment of John Simm's (masterly) portrayal of The Master.

  • jacobi was certainly more scary than john simm, but john simm was good

  • I liked Simm's Master okay, but Jacobi totally got ripped off IMO - I would have loved it if he had played the Master through the end of the series.

Best part is the last 10 seconds when he turns around after "awakening" his Timelord essence - you take one look in his eyes, and it's "ooooooh shit!" time! O_o

  • This whole part, from Martha and Yana talking about the watch toright then...is the best part of series 3, hands down. Always gives me goosebumps watching this bit.

  • I loved this part, but he should never have regenerated. I didn't like John Simm's master much at all, and the last two episodes just sucked. DJ's acting outshone everybody else's in this episode.

  • this is possible the best moment in new who history

  • This is quite possibly the best villain return on any program ever.

  • the best return ever, cos lets face it we all knew it was coming at some point, and this just happened so suddenly sp it still managed to be a surprise

  • well of course it topped barbossas return

his return was pretty lousy actually

  • Best comeback scene ever, topping even Barbossa's return at the end of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 2.

  • and wot a comment it is

  • lol
