@FreemasondWreAwsome what do we have today? Are you relly going to ask that. Well because the union won i can do what iwant instead beieng forced into slave labor and working all day and night, and bieng whipped beaten and deprived. How about that.
Lol I'm glad my head doesn't do that on camera! :D We started watching Glory in Social Studies about 2-3 days ago, and we didn't get far but I really love Col. Robert Shaw! Daym he is hott! ^.^ ♥
Your right bout this scene. It was always one of my favorite parts. All these actors give great performances, Kennedy, Freeman, Broderick and Denzel. But after growing up and getting more into history. Its really irritateing that they distorted so many little facts about the 54th that are so important just for the sake of makin this movie. The true story is just as heroic.
@cf117119 It's not beethoven because they are singing gospel which is of their roots. Some white people kill me with your idea that everything you think is right is the end all and be all. I know so many white churches that try their best to mimic black gospel music and how we sing it but just can't quite get it right. Last I checked, the majority of society wasn't check'n for classical music my friend. Hell, I'm a professional piano player, I play classical music and I think it's dull.
@EvilSiper to hate someone is wasted energy b/c most likely you can hate the person but that's not going to change who they are. Someone could say they hate you b/c you appear to be athiest yet we don't even know you. Hate derives from ignorance. I suggest you live your life focusing your energy on things that are positive instead of hate, b/ c you can hate until you are blue in the face and it wont change one thing. You seem like you may be a bit unstable and need some therapy.
@EvilSiper why do you hate christians?? The problem is religious intolerance. Please realize that you live on this earth with billions of people from all walks of life and they are not going to all be the same. That's the beauty of it. If we were all the same this would be a pretty boring place. Obviously you aren't a christian and I don't hate you. I simply don't care. You have just as much right to believe/not believe in whatever you want. Live your life and stop worrying about others.
I'm just a middle-aged white man from a typical suburban upbringing, but everytime I watch this my eyes tear up. What people (black and white) did for this country was amazing. Or just the thought of going into battle and knowing you'll likely die, wow. So much love for all the people who have/are/will fought/fighing/fight for this country.
I first saw this film 21 years ago. Have seen it again many times since, and I've always found it moving. Certainly one of the best films about the American Civil War. Then again, I brought some backstory with me to "Glory." As a lifelong Civil War buff, I learned about Shaw and the 54th in 1969, when I was not quite 10 years old. So it was kind of a culmination for me to see this excellent film, nearly 21 years later:).
Can't believe Denzel didn't receive and OSCAR for this Emotional Roll. He carried the film with Morgan! And I can bet they felt these rolls deep in the Hearts and Souls!

such a good scene. so impowering of what it was like for the African American's in the US during that time. how even though they had next to nothing they still had faith in the lord. such a good scene and such a good movie:D
my favorite one is pay day id love to say (10 doller a lot ov money ) no im not makeing fun of it it just sounded kined of neet the way he said it ten doller a lot ov money
Every now and then I start singing the song that they were singing and it all comes back! I will always admire their courage and sacrifice for freedom.
It's good the Union won & the slaved black people had their turning point from their white kidnapers. I just wonder if the Confederates won, history today is much different. Are both racist Confederates & Nazis alliance is possible?
is a confederate and nazi alliance possible? in my opinion, abso-fucking-lutley! think about it. Nazi-Killed Jews, Confederates-Killed Blacks. If both parties were still alive and running well, our world would be SCREWED. and oh, read Harry Turtledove, he made a novel about what would have happened had the CSA won the war.
@hencura Correct, If you happen to visit Hattiesburn Mississippi, you might get a tast of the beginnings of such an alliance. Each year they parade throughout the city of Hattiesburg. However, they have managed to draw the wrath of such diverst groups that it looks like they've picked a fight with the United Nations. Strangest thing about it is the fact that they demand the right to bear arms and get mad when their foes do the same.
This is also my favourite part. It is brilliantly written and naturally acted, almost as if it was not scripted, but the actors are speaking from the heart. Denzel, the main star of the movie has the least to say in the scene. He simply cannot find the words to speak. His tears represent a turning point for him. The sad things is that it is too late. He is killed in battle. "Cuz we men," is almost a justification for war. We know not why we fight, other than that we are men.
@peckamite Uh, I disagree with your take on the last battle. There was a color guard from the 54th that was given the Medal of Honor and I was under the impression that the Denzel Washingtin character was the portrayal of that individual. It was a brilliant movie regardless of it's historical accuracy.
My favourite scene as well. This is the point the whole film leads to and it does so exceedingly well. I remember knowing what Denzel was going to say after he says it doesn't matter what happens tomorrow. "Cuz we men."
This was the climax of the movie. But it could not end here. The final slaughter had to be shown for theatrical and historical purposes.

I live in SC & visited near where this battle took place. It is now underwater due to the erosion. There is not a marker or monument that I know of there. It's a shame. These men made the first major advance for the black man & they are mostly forgotten.
Why couldnt they just show 1 guy who said when it was his turn "Hell with you all, I aint dying for nobody, I want my gov check and my free food for my 8 kids, Im gonna go spend my money on 20inch rims!" Think thats wrong? We ALL know that this fictional guy does indeed exist. He needs to watch Glory and stand up like men, LIKE MEN! Where has the nobility of these singing men gone to? Why is entitlement and you-owe-me mentality so common? Freedom = Nobody owes you shit, you have to earn it.
The 54th had more soul than any European composer, I doubt the hater of this scene could even keep rythem with the GREAT song....Oh my lord lord lord lord.....
ah you don't like it when black people sing. would you rather it be, backstreet boys or nsync? maybe new kids on the block. sounds kind of racist to me. what was your favorite scene, all the black people getting killed at the end?
no i would rather see the scene where they read the speech from the confederate armed forces and the next day there is still a full battalion of soldiers with hardly any deserters. so why don't you go fuck yourself - let me guess your black and are trying to get reparations or something and yes i do hate that kind of singing, like i hate most black music - lets face it, its hardly Beethoven or Vivaldi is it! Oh and i do think the end scene is very good and if you don't like that then oh well.

ahhh you sound so angry. i am black and i'm proud of it. no i don't look for reperations because i work hard for my money. nice try though. i like this scene because they're expressing themselves the way they know how and expressing they're human and scared but they went anyway. that's called courage. i myself like beethoven and stravinsky. i also like old motown, which a lot of rock groups were influence by. have a good one. sir.
This scene and the scene where the white soldier says"Give 'em hell 54th!" always brings tears to my eyes. This movie forces people to see that we are all made from the same mold and that color means nothing when it comes down to our souls. We could all learn a great deal from this movie.
Let me tell you, I was about 10 when this movie came out and me and my cousin who was a couple years older then me went to see it at the show and when this movie was done and the people were walking out the show, they were BALLING, SNIFFING AND CRYING, white and black, without question the most powerful movie I have ever seen, I had to fight back a few myself but let a few go for sure..
I live on James Island, SC where they fought in their first battle. The courage and bravery they had is something 99.9% of us will never comprehend. One of the top ten American films ever made
Morgan freeman is the best. He could probably make an orange jucie commercial sound epic. "If tommorow is our great gettin up mornin"...lol yes. gotta love it. best before battle speech in movie history, rivaled only by king Theoden's speech in "Return of the king".
It's amazing that a film clip of a film clip can draw almost 12,000 views. It just shows that this scene really strikes a chord in people. They really had faith in God to endure as they did. I love it when Denzel says "y'alls the onliest family I got..."
i felt like a tool i cried at this part and wen they were marching towards fort wagner and the asshole at the beggining who said "Give them hell 54th" ur rite denzel did a hell of a job in this scene
I love this part! My friend finds it annoying. I used ti think that the first guy to talk said "I may know that You, blessed Jesus all muddy, are with me!". "Oh my Lord! Lord, Lord, Lord! Mmhmm... Mmhmm... Mmhmm".
Excellent movie. The cast and director really brought it home. I love history when it is upclose and personal. This scene is one that speaks of the inner conflict, building courage and unity. Nothing you would find in a history book. This scene really reached out and touched my heart.
I don't think they prayed bc they believed they would somehow win...but to settle their hearts. They knew that a lot of them were not going to come back. It was an effort to accept their coming fate...that's what i think.
This is definitely the best part of the movie. Thanks for posting it. Robert Gould Shaw is such a bad ass for going to the front of the line, and being the first to die. He could have stayed in the back, and hid, but he was a man. I admire Gould Shawm and I am not going to lie, I actually cried the first time I saw this scene because it was awesome, and I get chills every time I see the other soldiers cheer for the 54th right befor Wagner. Thank you 54.

ah you don't like it when black people sing. would you rather it be, backstreet boys or nsync? maybe new kids on the block. sounds kind of racist to me. what was your favorite scene, all the black people getting killed at the end?
drumfoomaster 3 years ago
no i would rather see the scene where they read the speech from the confederate armed forces and the next day there is still a full battalion of soldiers with hardly any deserters. so why don't you go fuck yourself - let me guess your black and are trying to get reparations or something and yes i do hate that kind of singing, like i hate most black music - lets face it, its hardly Beethoven or Vivaldi is it!

"If tommorow is our great gettin up mornin"...lol yes. gotta love it. best before battle speech in movie history, rivaled only by king Theoden's speech in "Return of the king".

lol...true that

It's amazing that a film clip of a film clip can draw almost 12,000 views. It just shows that this scene really strikes a chord in people. They really had faith in God to endure as they did. I love it when Denzel says "y'alls the onliest family I got..."

yea that gets me too. and you're right about the film clip...i don't know how to get it directly to my computer...

Excellent movie. The cast and director really brought it home. I love history when it is upclose and personal. This scene is one that speaks of the inner conflict, building courage and unity. Nothing you would find in a history book. This scene really reached out and touched my heart.
Thank you for posting it.

Great movie, too bad they actually thought praying was going to do them any good.
NickDanger0001 4 years ago
I don't think they prayed bc they believed they would somehow win...but to settle their hearts. They knew that a lot of them were not going to come back. It was an effort to accept their coming fate...that's what i think.
browns42 4 years ago
I meant that they were silly enough to think there was anyone listening.
NickDanger0001 4 years ago
Praying was a big thing back then. And they also were saying their good-byes to eachother, because they knew that most of them wouldn't make it back.
