This is a great DG. With a superb cast with Thomas Allen as the Don and Gwynne Howell as Commendatore two great British international singers of there time.
je viens de découvrir les videos magnifiques de Don JUAN de Mozart. BRAVO, c'est magnifique, grandiose, et l'interpretation si belle, si belle. MOZART est le plus grand, merci à vous pour vos videos
You may be right, actually. I made that comment having only had an opportunity to listen to the Furlanetto recording I have sparingly. I've heard it a few times over since and I'm inclined to agree, although what I like of what I've seen of Dean (both times on video) is how his expression appears to add a bit of humor to the role, at least to me.
The first recording of Don Giovanni I watched had Stafford Dean as Leporello, and he's best I've seen or heard so far at the part, altho Furlanetto is a close second. Really dig this opera lately.
Thank you so much for uploading these clips. I saw the same production back in '88, and loved both Joan Rodgers's Zerlina (I wanted to be her!) and Allen as Giovanni. It was the first opera I had seen performed 'live' and the production itself, in particular the costumes in particular, has stayed with me all years. You have bought back so many wonderful memories. Thank you! :-D
@antmusique I was 8 in 1988. I wish I could have been an adult in my 20's in the 80's. All the great stars singing then! Joan Sutherland was still doing her thing, Leontyne Price, Lucia Popp, Gundula Janowitz, Grace Bumbry, Shirley Verrett, Jessye Norman, Mirella Freni, Placido Domingo, Pavarotti, Thomas Allen, Kiri Te Kanawa, Ghena Dimitrova, so many countless stars both old and new then. The 80's was truly the final era of good opera singers
Ah, I didn't realise there was a playlist for this production until just now. Lol...how silly of me. I'll look forward to seeing more and definitely will check back. Just out of curiosity, how did you get such a good quality copy of the production? Is it on commercial release?

Counsel for basses: never make Thomas Allen angry. He can kill you even without a weapon, but with a sword, it's just a play.

But only when the libretto makes him do so...
BTW, it WAS foul play!

I understand what you mean. I think we have held the first civilized discussion on YouTube lol. Thanks for the response!

I've realised that, in my excitement I've typed "in particular" twice! LOL!

Oooooh, that's a nice story! I'm glad you got to see the production again, even if it's just in a crappy YouTube format.
I want a time travelling machine! I was far too young to go to the opera in 1988.

You're welcome! Allen and Te Kanawa are brilliant indeed.
I'm uploading more videos of this same production. It'll probably take me a couple of days to get to the end, but keep checking back.

I got it some time ago from a Yahoo group called OperaShare. The YouTube clips are misleading - they look okay-ish because the screen is so small.
