  • To get captions in DVD Studio Pro you should export either a Sonic Scenarist (SCC) caption file or the STL format. STL will give you subtitles and SCC will give you closed captions. Usually people use the SCC caption file to import into DVDSP for closed captions. The .smi format (SMIL) would not be used for that purpose.

  • I get this message when i try to open the file in quicktime

QuickTime Player cannot open files in the “synchronized multimedia integration language” format.

  • @jaynajay11fly Make sure you have QuickTime 7 installed. QuickTime X, the default movie player in OSX does not recognize these files. You can either download the QT7 installer from the Apple site or from your OSX install disk. I don't know why Apple went with QTX. It's not "done". Doesn't support many things that QT7 does. Also, you'll need QT7 Pro for embedding captions. It's a $30 upgrade to QT Player from Apple - well worth it!

  • @synchrimedia Thanks! I will update to QT7. Every time I save the file, it saves with the extension .smi. I am not able to get the file in DVD studio pro. Is it because .smi is a windows extension. How can i get this to work in the DVD studio pro? Thanks!

  • I am following the steps as you are demoing, but for some reason, I can not preview in the Quicktime. FYI...I downloaded the demo version of the software.

  • Awesome! Simple, yet very informative demo.

  • @jaynajay11fly thanks! I am continually making improvements to MovieCaptioner. The version shown in the video is actually an older version. There is now a Windows version available as well. Thanks for watching and your comment!

  • What a kick ass demo. Thanks.

  • @preachinshawn thank you! I hope to redo these videos soon. the s/w has improved in many ways since I originally made them. i'm a one-man operation, so it's tough to do everything else I need to do besides improving the s/w. I have a Windows version that I"m working on as well. hopefully I can get that out soon, so more people can caption their videos.

  • Thank you, the repetition was driving me mad until I saw your video. Now I know exactly what I'm doing and really enjoy it. I hope to transcribe many of my movies.

    Thanks.

  • If you prefer, after you hit the Start button, you can hit Control+Spacebar to toggle the play on and off sort of like transcriptionists use the foot pedal. It will keep looping, but only if it reaches the end of the loop. So you can let it play till you hear a few words, stop it, type it in, then toggle it back on. Let me know if you have any other questions, and thanks for giving it a try.

  • One problem i'm having is exporting the right .scc file to import into DVDSP. My source footage is 23.976, and when I go to add the .scc file to the track in DVDSP, it gives an error when I build the disc. It says that there's a timecode difference between the .scc file and the video file. Does anyone know why this is?

  • Try going to the Preferences and setting Movie FPS to 25 and see if that helps. Most video is either 25 FPS (PAL) or 29.97 (NTSC) or 30 FPS. Do you see captions when you export to SCC in the QT Player?

  • thank you

  • This is awesome. How come there're no subtitles in the preview though?

  • This problem was addressed by my creating a version of MovCaptioner that is compatible with the German system language. The prveview is done via QT SMIL and it is dependent upon having the right country abbreviation in the .qt.smi file. Email Synchrimedia if you have similar issues.

  • Is there a pc based software that works like this? that interval thing is sweet.

  • I am currently working on a Windows version. It may not have all the functionality of the Mac version at first, but it does already incorporate the interval thing. And like the Mac version, all upgrades will be free for people who purchase the s/w.
