well the barrel doesnt so much melt (im sure the gun would stop functioning well before that point)

but when a gun barrel heats and cools rapidly or repeatedly it can develop cracks and fissures alone the length of the barrel. making it less accurate and certainly less durable.

one thing that can happen over time or if you really lay some rounds down, is that those fissures and cracks can get bigger and longer,and that that starts to make the barrel sag or curve to the left or right..
