My dad flew B-58's and B-47's. The B-58 did not use JATO but the B-47 did. There are several video's showing B-47 takeoffs with JATO. I remember when this accident occurred. The plane circled the air base several times before they decided what to do and we watched it from our back yard until it left the area. You could see the fuel streaming out from it the whole time.
I was a clerk stationed at Bunker Hill/Grissom AFB in Indiana. This was a B58 base. They had all kinds of problems with this airplane. I remember on takeoff end of runway the both port engines failed. Because I was assigned to the SP I got 1st hand info on this one. The SPs had to pick up all the pieces. One sgt told me that there was nothing left; couldn't even find body parts. He was upset. Another 3 crewmen bailed out. All 3 parachute systems failed & all 3 dead. They retired these aircraft.
I may be wrong, but that doesn't look like either RATO or JATO to me, and I can't find any evidence online that the B-58 ever used jet or rocket bottle-assisted take off. It looks more like an afterburner-ignited fuel leak to me.
JATO is an acronym for jet-fuel assisted take off. It is a system for helping overloaded aircraft into the air by providing additional thrust in the form of small rockets.
The term is used interchangeably with the (more specific) term RATO, for Rocket-Assisted Take Off
The story is that the left main tires blew and 1 wheel came off puncturing the fuel tank from Fort Worth Carswell. That's all the fuel coming out back. They flew on to Ewards AFB with gear down after about 7 inflight refuelings and landed grinding metal. They didn't use JATO on that aircraft. The afteburner lit the fuel off. They are very lucky they didn't crash like the Concorde.
@gbriff Can't go mach 2 without afterburner. They planned on using j-58 sr-71 engines for the b-58c and hit mach 3 to compete with the xb-71 but that deal was cancelled
Nope. Number 3 engine's starter was engaged and exploded, sending shrapnel into the giant underslung fuel tank. Fuel billows out and promptly ignites. SAC's finest got the plane back on the ground in one piece.
@zf4hp24 That's pretty amazing that SAC's finest was in the cockpit like you said, and not the 2nd or 3rd best. You'd think that SAC's finest would be in Mojave, or by chance out having a hamburger for lunch somewhere. .... Just having fun.

When I was about 10 yrs old, my dad and I were out hunting and I looked up and saw a contrail.
I was bored so I kept watching to see if I could identify the aircraft.
Not many plane left contrails back when I was a kid so it interested me.
While I was watching the plane blew up, disintegrated instantly.
Boom, gone, just bits coming down, almost exactly like the Challenger wreckage.
The News that night was full of the story of a B-58 exploding over Oklahoma.
I saw it from Flash to Crash.
