its probably about irational fear which endlessly adds up to the point where you cant run anymore. In this case runing would have been useles anyway and thats what he realises at the end. He would probably feel great relief and kinda elevated.

Or : he's runing from death and the closer he gets to the exit, the more it becomes real. At the end he's tired and can not run anymore. He then takes he's chances

and manages to survive somehow, which ends up in the same elevated feeling of relieve.
