He loves the crickets, but we have to hold on to their legs and feed them to him because he gets scared when they move around him freely. I suppose we'll just have to cut them in half or something. He's so spoiled, lol. Apparently he doesn't like junebugs either. : /
My hedgehog hasn't grasped the concept of hunting the crickets yet. He just freaks out when they're near his face, and puffs into a ball. Any tips on how to get him to hunt them?
@ShottyFantastic The first time mine saw a live cricket he devoured it, so I can’t be much help to you, but I've heard of people putting mealworms in their new hedgehog's food bowl so they can figure out that it’s food. Maybe if you kill a cricket and put it in with his usual food he'll develop a taste for them.
@ShottyFantastic get reptile feeding tongs. then the cricket seems less like a living creature that could pose a threat and only appears as a mean. Perhaps even get fruit and rub it on the tongs so that it smells super yummy. Never had a hog, but it seems worth a try right?
@veryberrybread1 I always gave mine live ones, so I don't know first hand, but they'd probably eat the packaged kind. (not a dead one of the live kind, though. That might make them sick.) If you are getting a hedgehog, be sure to do lots of research on how to take good care of them first, and find a good vet ahead of time. They're learning new things about them all the time, and it's important for vets and owners to keep up to speed. Congrats, and good luck! =D
@veryberrybread1 They really like live food as a treat, but yes, I think they could live without it. Their staple food should be the right kind of high-quality dry cat food, plus a variety of chopped vegetables and fruits, if you can manage it. I could never get mine to eat his veggies. Mealworms aren't as creepy to handle as crickets are, and some pet-stores have them canned too. Hedgehogs LOVE mealworms.
lol I guess they put other videos made by you in their "Related Videos" section, lol. That's just my guess. Either that, or YouTube just doesn't make any sense, lmao. xD
I keep the crickets in a big Tupperware container with food and egg cartons for them to crawl around in. It's like keeping pets to feed to another pet. It's kind of creepy, actually. I feel sorry for them. I haven't bought him crickets in a while, but there are meal-worms hibernating in my refrigerator. They're his favorite. =S
Oh I get it. At first, I literally thought they were from the egg carton (in the first place)... which would've been disgusting to me. :P If he likes crickets, does that mean maybe he might like a few other bugs as well, or no?
He'd probably eat just about anything with six legs (and a few things with four) if given the opportunity, but I don't feed him wild bugs for health reasons. Crickets and mealworms are pretty standard feeder bugs in pet stores so that's what I usually get for him. His staple diet is a specialty cat-food, though. Live prey is a treat. ^^
Most dog foods don't have the right nutrition for a hedgehog. Neither do most cat foods, for that matter. I feed him a very specific, low fat, high-protein cat food which I buy in bulk from a pet-food supplier in another city, and even that's not ideal.
Hedgehogs haven't been on the market long enough for much research to be done on their nutritional needs (compared to cats and dogs) but we do know that certain types of pet kibble will leave them malnourished. For now, experts recommend variety.
anyone else notice the cricket that is catching a ride on its side? ;)
at least that is what it looks like.
i just adore them! -3

@veryberrybread1 My hedgehog loves eating freeze-dried meal worms. So yes, at least my little guy doesn't care whether they are dead or not :P

...How ...the heck ...is my Sally and Sonic video related to this? The only commonalities are the "hedgehog" tag and my name. 0_0
... 7 of the 20 related videos are mine. I don't remember saying "Fiona Fox eats crickets" in that description...
Mario? Indiana Jones? Pokemon?
(sigh) I will never fully understand you, YouTube.
