This trailer is hilarious, but even more hilarious due to the lack of narration and dialog and the overdubbed sound effects. Not to mention the title cards (SOON! COMING!). Good stuff.
This movie used to show on KTTV chanel 11 in Los Angeles the first week of every February during the early 1970's during the early morning weekday. One had to skip school to watch this movie.
Didn't the American kids watching this in theaters in the late '60s,or the early-to-mid '70s---the golden age of the low-budget kiddie matinee---wonder just what the heck THAT was all about?
I've seen the MST3K version multiple times and found the unedited film on eBay. I like the Russian-Finnish co-productions on MST3K a lot - this, Sinbad, The Day the Earth Froze, Sword and the Dragon, etc. They're fun fairy tales that are neat to watch even without a human and his robots making fun of them.

this film is virtually unknown in the usa. If it aired at the time of its original release, that would be shocking to me since the russians were communists at the time. It aired as an episode of a comedy show called "mystery science theater 3000" on tv in usa in 1997ish and that was how I saw it as a kid. I freaken love Natalya Sedykh in this. She was surrealistically cute in this movie. I watch it every once in a while just to see her eyes.
I absolutely remember this when I was young, but they never play it in the USA anymore. It was one of my favorite holiday movies back then (1970s). I haven't seen it for close to 35 years. I looked it up on the chance it would be here on youtube. I'm glad I found it.
I saw this on MST3K. The girl is so beautiful! I wonder if the film itself is available on DVD. I have always remembered seeing something similar to this in theaters as a child during the children's matinees.
the slowly floating feather shot from the arrow. classic. hm. most Mysterious. but i like "maria and the magic weaver" better. is alexander row some kind of pseudonym for alexander ptushko, or is it a remake of ptushko, or something he only helped w/ concerning the screenwriting/ or design/effects?
Aleksandr Row is a different person than Ptushko and he made his own movies. The feather is from a bird the guy killed with his arrow. They didn't show graphic violence in Soviet movies for kids.
i think blandness+apathy r a form of social violence too that can enter kids minds thru bad movies(kids movies+tv included)some kids stuff recently lacks magic+the true stuff of bein a kid, w/characters,animated or live-action that r as devoid of expression as robot zombies. the kids movies,sci-fi+fantasy in general have recently lost alot of magic, awe+wonder, corrupting ppls minds for big $
okay gotcha so he didnt shoot d feather but an arrow-but i still like the idea of a feather bein shot outta the bow cuz its childish+silly.&yeah violence aint4dkidds,only w/mature supervision+hopefully not 2fuckedup ¬ in a kiddie film.man i like the ptushko+row shit, fantasy directors should b studyin them 24/7.like d stuff of dr suess,80s d&d cartoon+what made speilberg, lucas+cameron at dheight of their creaive powers, ptushko+rows visions make u wanna b a kid
You gotta know your own country's mythology if you're gonna' massacre it so efficiently. The director threw every Russian legend and superstition into the stewpot and turned up the heat. It made for an adorable mess, but I still can't figure why the Czechs love it the most. They're supposed to hate russkies.
One of my all time favourite movies! Watched it every Christmas season!!

@TlalocW I totally agree. I LOVE all those movies just on their own merits (although I find the MST3K versions hilarious too).

the feather is not shot from the arrow... and the film is very old, it was made in 1964, so it is classic.
