  • really love this

  • Very distinctive sound ~ powerful!

  • Oh yea!! Turn it up!

  • Only heard this song by Brook Benton before. The Larks make his version (which I always loved) seem like bubble gum music.

  • This is GREAT!!

  • Some long legged madonna keeps calling me Shadrack.

  • This is BRILLIANT! .......LORD HAVE MERCY!!!

  • Excellent! I second the Elvis comment, he was actually a big fan of vocal groups both gospel and secular and both black (including the mills Bros.) and white (the Blackwood Bros.) so it's likely he did hear of this group.

  • just an incredible performance here! WOW WEE,what an effort. boy oh boy were they ever versatile and immensely talented. thank you sooooo much for this truely great "view". tom d brick,nj

  • they're so beautiful

  • how can u not love this?

  • Probably the best version of this tune. Awesome.

  • oh, thanks for posting this-they are great-right on!!!

  • in the house.....cool

    respect

  • All of the great black gospel groups could light their fires and heat their skillets with very minimal accompaniment. A guitar or a piano--if that much--was all they needed to cook. And some sang a capella, of course.

  • You can grab the audio-mp3 of this tune at grabyouraudio doht cohm.

  • No , Ray Charles got 'Hit The Road' from Percy Mayfield , who wrote it and recorded an early demo. Similar feel to this , like a thousand other tunes.

  • OK, I may have found a new obsession.

  • still looking for the original. this is the closest.

  • god they do remind me of elvis !!

  • too cool! and yes, it's no secret that elvis was greatly influenced by church and gospel singing.

  • there is a record that has this song its called "up with the larks"

  • killer harmony...............

  • Love this. Any one knows if this has been released on record . Just getting better better each time you listen to it. Look at the sheer fun they are having.

  • This track is cookin

  • awesome

  • don julian was the meadowlarks,.the was another group called the larks

  • This group evolved out of the amazing "Selah Jubilee Singers" and later formed the core of the equally stunning "5 Royales"...

  • A Capella group "Cadence" from Toronto Canada does an unbelievable cover on their frost free album!

  • Is it me or do I hear the birth of the Elvis singing style here?

  • @threadgillb nice suggestion.[observation here]! if this dosn't move ya', you may need a labotamy. tom d brick,nj

  • @doowopman49 Too right.

  • @threadgillb I believe you are Correct, sir!!! I mean, madame.... ; )

  • @phemohilia Thank you!

  • @phemohilia Thank you!

  • Actually there was a third group, called the Larks,a caucasian group. This is a great version of Shadrach,Meshach and Abednigo, the 3 Hebrew children who were placed in a boiling cauldron by Nebuchadnezzar for failing to worship his pagan Gods, yet they failed to burn! This was one of the earliest miracles recorded in the Bible.

  • repris par Louis Armstrong ça donne pas aussi bien finalement !

  • who is the one actually singint the lead on shadrack. I know it's not eugene mumford

  • your are right that is not Gene Mumford singing lead that is Allen Bunn

  • I think that he is Orville Brooks. He was member of Golden Gate Quartet.

  • You are Correct Allen Bunn sand lead on the Apollo record released in 1952 This version from the Filmcame out in 1954 and it is Orville Brooks doing lead

  • according to uncle marv's this killer thing never got into record, did it? has some crazy people ever got this into a record??

  • Oh yesss!!! This is so great!! I love the Golden Gate Quartet version, but this is also really fantastic! Thank you VERY much for sharing this :).

  • This is my introduction to these guys and I can highly recommend them. Such style.

  • Nice, a rich sound!!

  • Does anybody have 'Stolen Love' by the Larks,

that they could put on youtube for me plse??

Its my all time fav. song

  • @doowopsylv Stolen Love by the Larks was just posted by "TheNickNicola" Enjoy! BTW, I agree with you that this is a great song, but I've always preferred "My Reverie" with Gene Mumford on lead.

  • @HeywoodJadumi Hi, thanks for the notify!! Have found it. Absoloutely Love *Stolen Love' - my all time fav. Doo Wop classic. Yeah, like My Reverie as well!! Thanks for letting me know!!

  • @HeywoodJadumi My Reverie is the best song I've heard by this great group but I must admit I haven't heard many of their songs more than a few times (except for 'Reverie'). This one is really good and quite different from others I've heard by the Larks.

  • This was a very popular song during the 1960's. Several quartets covered it, as well as groups like the Clara Ward Singers, and soloists like Louis Armstrong (as some people have already mentioned), Brooke Benton and Cleophus Robinson.

  • Love it

  • I've got The Larks singing 'Shadrack' on the old Apollo label. Never imagined that there'd actually be footage of them singing it. Five solid stars!

  • I would say the exact words that have been said by Scarlett24ca... I would listen to Louis' version all day through!

    Thanks for the upload.

  • I enjoyed that!

  • I am so glad I found this song! Thank you for posting it. I typed in the title and got the Beastie Boys. How is that possible? I got religious talks and other stuff. I almost gave up when I thought I should try one more time. There it is. Thank You! Not the version I grew up listening to, but wonderful in its own right.

  • Jen, uh... because the Beastie Boys have a song called "Shadraq Meshaq and Abendigo", perhaps?

  • I was refering to the fact that the Beastie Boys are not known for religious songs so it caught me off guard. Glad I didn't give up because it was worth the time.

  • I love hearing different people sing songs that I love. I grew up with Brooke Benton's version. That version is also on You tube. Both versions are fabulous.

  • damn! that was good and they dressed sharp to

  • It is amazing. I will pay more attention to a well dressed group than one that isn't. I didn't realize how sharp they looked until you pointed it out because they sang so well. (I agree with you)

  • where did you find the footage?

  • I am not the poster, but I first saw this on the USA Network as part of the "Night Flight" program. They used to show the old "Showtime At the Apollo/Harlem Revue" shows which were a combination of studio performances and Snader Telescriptions (when it's a Snader clip, look closely; you will see a short cartoon of curtains parting). There is no audience, but the performances are live in the studio. I have not seen this for over twenty years, so thank you very, very much Fair DealDan!

  • good gawd!!! this is makin' me shake my ass and I'm WHITE!!!!!!HALLELOOOOYAHHHHHJEEEZUS

  • A devine spirit moving among us...my great-aunts song this kind of gospel.=> Thanks for sharing!!!!!!!!!!!

  • What WONDERFUL singing! I've never heard anyone sing this song better than the Larks.

  • How about Louis Armstrong; that version is just awesome.

  • OMG! I love the Louis Armstrong version, he sang it 2 perfection. Okay- the legend sang the best version. But these guys where pretty good.

  • I totally agree with you. Do you also have the Louis Armstrong album with all the swinging spirituals?

  • No but, I will own it soon:)

  • If I am not mistaken, this group sang background vocals on some of Mahalia Jackson's biggest hits on the Apollo label. They're smoooooooooooooth!

  • Fantastic!!!!!modern & actual!!

  • would make the GOLDEN GATE QUARTET proud...tenor eugene mumford would briefly join THE GATES in their adopted Eupopean homebase....gene sang a stunning version of white christmas that appears on numerous GATES albums that were issued and reissued for decades throught europe....a briilant quartet it is wonderful to have this pricelees footage that captures their AWESOME talent

  • i love it!!

  • quality

  • This is INCREDIBLE! What artistry. (by the way...kinda sounds like Elvis bit sumthin off of these singers. Hmmmm) Just incredible.

  • oh wow, i'm in heaven

  • Say wait a minute Dan - are you talking about Gene Mumford's Larks or Don Julian's Larks? Two separate groups. This looks like Mumford's Larks and nothing to do with Don Julian, or do I have this backwards?

  • great to see you still here FairDealDan. Everyone else is being wiped out. What the f*** happened to the extraordinary archive put together by innercalm? everything, Sandra King, the Impressions, Barbara Lynn, The Spidells... everything gone, closed down. What's going on?

  • 1954 at the Apollo Theater

    Gene Mumford

    Orville Brooks

    David "Boots" Bowers

    Isaiah Bing

    Pianist Glenn Burgess

  • I was good friends w/ the late Don Julian. His group-"Larks" --backing him on his 1965 song and album-The Jerk-- was a COMPLETELY unrelated group- I don't think Don even knew of the original Larks.

  • My favourite version of Shadrack is the one from Louis Armstrong. Try to find it; it's just great

  • I have it on CD, Columbia House has it under Louis Armstrong complete hits. It's pricy but worth it for any Louis fan

  • totally excellent, and try the version by brooke benton on p2p if you fancy another twist.

  • Great to see/hear this. I wasn't familiar with it, only have the easly available reissues of Don Julian (& The Larks) stuff - Shorty The Pimp and Savage soundtracks.

  • Thanks this is great!

  • HIP!!!

  • Great to see this! If you ever have the chance to hear The Ames Brothers version of this song, it's an AMAZING rendition! I highly recommend it!

  • Until now, the only version I was familiar with was the late Bobby Scott's (of "A Taste of Honey" and "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" fame) - his recording was the flip of "Chain Gang" (not the Sam Cooke song, alas) which was released as a single in late 1955 on the then-new ABC-Paramount label.
