My parents don't have conversations anymore, because my mom says my dad is under Satanic attack; that they're 'not on the same page' anymore - because he has been questioning his beliefs and doesn't want to attended church anymore. My parents have no connection anymore. My dad thinks and my mom doesn't.
It seems to be tribal. But, before being a tribal attitude, there seems to be this plain desire to feel good, and outside of the tribal thinking there seems to be an ego coating.
It seems like the tribal thinking is generally unimportant for whoever believes. It seems they don't care about those attitudes and it seems that those who can realize its lack of meaning, they find it easier to stop believing.
I wonder if religion is simply the result of basic human processes for understanding and dealing with reality, associated with copping, comfort and fear.
It seems many aspects of religion end up inhibiting people's ability to reason. Most of these people seem to be generally reasonable except when under a religious context, but little by little that religious context seems to spread into other areas of their life and affects other processes for understanding.
it might in some cases like they are only together because of their religion and staying together for the kids. I don't agree with it but it does happen there should be love between the couple. Its not really healthy, but it happens

I think people become (and remain) religious for the very fact that it does separate them from others. Let's face it -- humans, by and large, are a neurotic and insecure group, and who doesn't want to feel superior to someone else? It's really just human nature at work. I also believe that God did not create man -- quite the opposite, in fact. Man created God because he needed to explain the scientific nature of the world (ie, where does the sun go at night).
I was devastated to find out my wife was having an affair, but by turning to religion I was soon able to come to terms with the whole thing. I converted to Islam, and we're stoning her in the morning!
And atheism is just one more world view that divides people. I'm sure atheists will claim to be the only critical thinkers in the world, but they are not. How many atheists have really critically examined the claim that their great ancestor looked like a mudskipper? Or they evolved from single celled sea slime? Clearly preposterous ideas held in the face of empirical evidence to the contrary. I'll even use the word credulous.
@gaeaandproud Alright. It is assumed that 99.9% of all species are extinct. Not because we have found those fossils but because macro evolution assumes that many missing fossils. And yet upwards of 60-90% of current living animals are represented in the fossil record! A known factor we can check rate of fossilization against. Thus we have EMPIRICAL evidence the fossil record is not 99.9% incomplete based on animals we know exist! Thus we know those needed missing animals never existed.

@thewordofgod2010 Macro-evolution has quite a lot of evidence. Porpoises and whales have a very clear fossil lineage, showing mammalian evolution from land-faring creatures to sea-faring creatures. A simple Google search will clear this up.

Fortunately my religious family and friends have more "secular" morals than "biblical morals", even though they wouldn't like to admit it or just don't realize it, so they haven't turned their back on me. There is a question i would like to ask christians and i think it is a good one. If god had the same exact deal as he has now, but YOU personally would not get to go to heaven for believing in him but everyone else who did would get to go there, would you still be a christian?
Family pressure can drive a person nuts.... I am obsessed with finding the truth for myself and undoing all the brainwashing that my moms religion has caused me. I am told just about every day that for me questioning her faith that I am going to hell.... her thinking is so irrational and angry that she has almost struck me (I am 50 and live across the street from her) during our conversations about it...that she always brings up. I want it to stop but it goes on and on. Help.
The only way to deal with domineering people is to clash head on with them. Stand your ground absolutely. That puts the ball in their court.
If they are truly a loving family worthy of your affection they will eventually come around in some way. There will be some sort of compromise at the very least if not eventually full acceptance.
But if they reject you and stick with it, then fuck them. If that's how it's gonna be, then screw 'em you don't need them in your life then.
The way I see it with family is that either you accept eachother, or you don't. And if people can't accept your right to be who you are, well good riddance to them. That's how I do it, and I don't regret any of it, you know who you can count on that way. And who should be able to count on you. And you remove nonsense from your life.

when i told my family that im an athiest, they nailed a freaking cross on my door and punished me for something that i believe or think. thats plain ignorance. eventually they accepted that fact that im an athiest but they still hold that inner grudge and fear against me. i dont know why but im guessing they were raised as kids to believe that 'anyone' who strays away from religion is a satanists which is bullcrap. i see everything in a logical manner and dont kneel to fear or superstition.

Its not because im an athiest, but because im tired of seeing children get bullied, neighbors harrassed, and seeing children with no homes. It seems to be tribal. But, before being a tribal attitude, there seems to be this plain desire to feel good, and outside of the tribal thinking there seems to be an ego coating.
It seems like the tribal thinking is generally unimportant for whoever believes. It seems they don't care about those attitudes and it seems that those who can realize its lack of meaning, they find it easier to stop believing.

I wonder if religion is simply the result of basic human processes for understanding and dealing with reality, associated with copping, comfort and fear.
It seems many aspects of religion end up inhibiting people's ability to reason. Most of these people seem to be generally reasonable except when under a religious context, but little by little that religious context seems to spread into other areas of their life and affects other processes for understanding.
Like a malignant syndrome... weird.

I think people become (and remain) religious for the very fact that it does separate them from others. Let's face it -- humans, by and large, are a neurotic and insecure group, and who doesn't want to feel superior to someone else? It's really just human nature at work. I also believe that God did not create man -- quite the opposite, in fact. Man created God because he needed to explain the scientific nature of the world (ie, where does the sun go at night).

@gaeaandproud Alright. It is assumed that 99.9% of all species are extinct. Not because we have found those fossils but because macro evolution assumes that many missing fossils. And yet upwards of 60-90% of current living animals are represented in the fossil record! A known factor we can check rate of fossilization against. Thus we have EMPIRICAL evidence the fossil record is not 99.9% incomplete based on animals we know exist! Thus we know those needed missing animals never existed.

There is a 'ring' of this species in the California Central Valley, and within that ring scientists have observed almost every step of speciatian- including the two resultant species, Ensatina eschscholtzii on the western fringe and Ensatina klauberi on the eastern fringe, being unable to interbreed- a clear marker of macro-evolution at work.

I am told just about every day that for me questioning her faith that I am going to hell.... her thinking is so irrational and angry that she has almost struck me (I am 50 and live across the street from her) during our conversations about it...that she always brings up. The only way to deal with domineering people is to clash head on with them. Stand your ground absolutely. That puts the ball in their court.
If they are truly a loving family worthy of your affection they will eventually come around in some way. There will be some sort of compromise at the very least if not eventually full acceptance.
But if they reject you and stick with it, then fuck them. If that's how it's gonna be, then screw 'em you don't need them in your life then.

The problem is, most folks have too much pride to humble themselves before the Lord. They do not want to submit. Of course, the Lord has not given them a new eternal soul. If He had, they would be in love with the Lord. The goats have hearts of stone, and hate the Lord. Only the Lord can give someone a "new" heart (Ezek 36:24-27)

The biblical timeline of history comes from the bible it is not added to the bible it is figured out by taking all the verses that have time and date info and putting them all together to form a calendar by which we learn all the dates of the important events in Gods salvation plan. nope. i knew of utube, but didnt use it until recently. i was doing online witnessing on facebook and myspace. but, i didnt know who harold camping was until recently either. back in 1994 i was a member of a charismatic church. In 2008 I began reading my bible more and more, & AlmightyGod by His mercy and calling led me into truth, gave me eyes to see, and ears to hear. when i told my family that im an athiest, they nailed a freaking cross on my door and punished me for something that i believe or think. thats plain ignorance. eventually they accepted that fact that im an athiest but they still hold that inner grudge and fear against me. i dont know why but im guessing they were raised as kids to believe that 'anyone' who strays away from religion is a satanists which is bullcrap. i see everything in a logical manner and dont kneel to fear or superstition.

Ofcourse I don't need full evidence for absolutely everything, there's alot I take for granted. However, when you're talking about something as major as the creation of the universe and the process by which life is in its current state on Earth, you need to look at facts more closely. Also, there is reliable evidence to suggest that the Big Bang Theory is true and apes ARE still evolving to this day.

The reason you dont see half man and half ape is because there arent alot of them because they arent suited for the modern environtment of the earth. We made it here from those "half-man half-ape" creatures because that was a long time ago, and the world was very different.

Kids are rejected, abused, and sometimes beaten by their own parents for being homosexuals. Cases of homosexuals being murdered have risen lately too. Its not because im an athiest, but because im tired of seeing children get bullied, neighbors harrassed, and seeing children with no homes. I live in a neighborhood where children without homes are a daily occurence, most of them being neglected by their parants for being gay. I have a neighbor who is constantly harrassed by local christians, and i lose my freinds each time -
