  • I watch it at least twice a day!

  • @latinobwoy69 There is also an issue where the masculine dance moves has been totally eroded. Pls take a look at "Havana Rakatan". See their dancers : huge differences between male and female body motions and movements. Here i dont see any difference. Pls clarify. Is latin dancing turning androgynous now?

  • I was checking the salsa wikipedia and suddenly a new entry been made on NY Style -> Abakua School. Did some private research and found out that Abakua is a afro-cuban fraternal organisation, a secret society.

How come none of the dance member here are cubans/ have afro roots, or have afro-cuban training from original source? On top of it the music is NY mambo, developed by puerto ricans. I check Abakua website and Frankie Martinez is definitely not afro. Can someone frm Abakua School clarify?

  • @AfroMalaya I didn't know that you had to be of afro decent to be able to dance afro cuban.. Furthermore,If you do more of your "private research" you will realize that Puerto Ricans are of afro decent too.

  • @kenimoli Stop insinuating, i am asking for clarifications. But what i am saying is there is NO link to afro-cuban dances at all but utilize the name Abakua. At least have decency to have the real Abakua dancing or heritage - e.g. pitting kukluxklan looking effigy against oppressed afros, etc. What i see here is NY 2nd Hand Mambo (not even real mambo) masquearading as Afro-cuban dance. And changing the name to Afro-Latin Funk which is is closer to musicality of the Timba than NY Jazz Mambo.

  • @AfroMalaya Yes you're correct it is a secret society, which has it's roots in Calabar Nigeria where I'm from! The language is a mixture of Efik,Yoruba and Spanish.I guess within this context, they are taking the dance style from Abakua, and improvising it, hence the 'Abakua School' It is quintessentially an Afro Cuban fraternity, however those non Afro Cubans may have had African Ancestors, and have passed on the tradition, so now colour is not necessarily a big deal.

    PEACE!

  • More angry Cubans upset because a music form they (Europeans/Africans/Indigenous) created has been popularized, transformed, and improved upon by other folks. GET OVER IT.

  • @lhaire its timba time now. 1,000 timba songs every year. Puerto Ricans are going reggaeton cause its all about selling for them.

  • This is how missinformation is widespread. Some fucking ignorants who have no clue what the fuck they're talking

about come to the internet to mislead people who might not know any better.

So-called "Salsa" didn't start in NY or PR.

Stop taking credit for something other people created and you borrowed and made your little version from it!!! Cause that's what y'all did!. In there's nothing in that bullshit video wich identifies the ABAKUA!!! Do some fucking non-bias research first!!!

  • what an eloquent point.

salsa is a mix of cultures and music from all over. it is still developing like a language. nobody owns it. we all share it and add to it.

salsa is a made up term anyhow, much like 'pop music'. it is term used to mean a huge range of musics and styles.

the ability of these dancers and creativity of the choreography are stunning to me. the mix of influences shown here is immense. any musician or dancer can appreciate this.

¿Cómo no?

  • The dude Zafito is correct. Abakua are a secret society of a very macho mens only club of witches.

  • wwaaooo frankie siempre impresionante

  • Johnny Colon's 'Merecumbe' is one of my favorite salsa tunes of all time...and the choreography is awesome as well, Juan Martos and Frankie Martinez together..I don't know the other dancers but they are all pretty awesome!!

  • the principal girls is Lori Perez.

  • Excelent dance group, Clasical song!

  • chequen el minuto 4:39. upss se kayó jijii

  • I loved it

  • sorry...REALLY liked it :P

  • I realy liked the fusion

    por mas cultura latina :)

  • wow that was fantastic. so professional. you can dance salsa but the afro-cuban sabor isn't something you learn - you feel it. well done. made me want to dance!

  • It's funny you should mention that because every single person on that stage LEARNED the AFRO-CUBAN body motion.

  • Abakua performed in Madrid last year their pieces, Raices, Children of a Groove, Stills with poetry during intermission. I heard it was awesome! They have been invited back to Madrid and are now adding their latest piece to perform a full 2 hour theatre show. However, they are going to perform the entire show in New York before they take it on tour. I am holding my breath!

  • how can it be so perfect?!?! ohhhhh...love it!

  • I wouldve scored this choreography in a 50's palladium zoot style setting. With the guys being zoots or "pachucos" like they used to call them in the 50s doing various complicated footwork and tricks and drops. Now that i think of it. I might do it.

Que viva frankie, hes still an excellent dancer.

  • I love your idea for the choreography but getting back to Frankie Martinez, he mixes and matches traditional and modern dance and has succeeded in taking his style to another level.

  • i m agree with u ,im modern dancer and i had the honor to spoke with him and he told me that he mixs afro , modern (contemporaneo) and mambo ..but he still lookin for new mixes..like plena bogaloo and funky.. he is awesome.. that style he called afro latin funk..sorry for my english ..saludos

  • I love frankie martinez , i just didnt appreciate this show. If i wouldve choreographed and done customes for this show I wouldve done it differently.

  • frankie martinez number one

  • Frankie isn't even trying to do traditional salsa, so it makes no sense to compare it to salsa. As he says in his DVD, he calls what he does "Afro-Latin funk" now.

  • ah pipe...Abakua can dance boogaloo if they want I just saw them...Salsa is born in NY ...they can own you because they dance many styles (newyork, los angeles, on clave, ...) and you???

  • first time I saw this video I said..ok it's ok, second time wow..that's cool...third time woww hilarious...forth time WOW INCREDIBLE...fifth time I fall down from my chair :D....every single movement of their body worths all salseros moves in the earth, this is music this is dancing without turning around 1000 times it's just body moves I love it it's an example. ps: frankie is a gay? you must know that every dancer on these levels f00ked over 5000 girls in his life.

  • plx nothing like colombians.... no footwork?

  • you mean like salsa boricua !!! Lujoso

  • pipe, what do you mean colombians? Can you do the footwork on this video? I really don't think so and can you choreograph something like this? I really doubt it. It is said that all Latin countries are linked, your comments intend to separate and that is really sad.

  • i dont really want to separate nothing.... its just that i think the colombians really feel the music, what kind of choreograph is this.. thats not salsa!!!! and yes you are rite.... i cant do a choreograph like that... because i know how to dance salsa!!!

  • Pipe, let's see your work in the theatre!

  • Merecumbé/ Johnny Colon

  • omg who is the artist for this song? i need to no

  • This song is the BEST. This choreography is weird, but very VERY good. I see them mark the 2nd beat very little, they step a lot on 1, 3, 5 and 7 but little on 2 and 6. That's why it's a bit strange, but these guys can dance!

  • I would like to dance with you! For sure...that's awesome.

  • very good

  • Holy shit, that was great. :D

  • I agree, that video blew my mind!

  • Now that's what I call a Salsa Preformance!!!

  • Very Nice.

  • This performance is incredible...Frankie Martinez's choreography is amazing....Lori as the lead is fantastic!
