LOVE DANIEL--in both forms--Spader in the movie and Shanks in the series. Daniel is my perfect man and whoever originally created the character read my mind. Kind, smart, not arrogant, respects women and GREAT HAIR. Oh to be 19 and have someone like him come along (sigh)
I REALLY liked this movie...and agree with anyone who believes Michael Shanks was the perfect successor to James Spader for the part of Daniel Jackson. He had the look, though he was so adorably bumbling, something Spader's version of Jackson wasn't. He was bumbling enough, but Shanks, probably because he was so young at the time, just looked so adorable when he was getting on Jack's nerves.
And Kurt Russell...yowza! I know his treatment of Jack depicted him as a jerk, but damn he was hot!
Stargate is real underrated masterpiece with unique storyline, visual effects and acting. James Spader was perfect for this film - believable and really phenomenal acting. Kurt Russell, Viveca Lindfors, Alexis Cruz, Erick Avari and Mili Avital did a great job too. The 90's were really the Best era. Other underrated SCI-FI films of that era - Lawnmower Man, Alien 3, Virtuosity, Space Truckers, FutureSport, RoboCop 2, The Time Shifters, The Arrival, Mimic, Sphere
"It's locked itself onto a point somewhere in the Kaliem Galaxy. It has Mass--it could be a moon or small asteroid." They figured out all that from a probe that never left the Abydos pyramid? How the hell do they figure mass? Also, how do you even track and object *across the universe* in real time?
@mysterio5005 The probe was probably fitted with a gravimeter so it could determine that there was a significant gravitational force acting on the environment in which the probe arrived. Sounds like something you'd want to know. So yeah, there's the mass. Since the symbols themselves are supposed to define points derived from known stars it should be fairly easy to track where it's going (but during it...?). The "galaxy far far away" thing makes a feat like that highly implausible anyway.
James Spader brings such a delicacy and stilted brilliance to every role he plays, whether it be hero or villain or whatever Alan Shore is. He's a gem in the acting world.
The General - West ? - in this movie was a real bastard. He was deliberately sending the team on a 1 - way, suicide mission, hence the choice of a suicidal, " depressed - over - the - death - of - his - son " Jack O'Neill, & sending a nuke along.
Now what should really annoy you is (according to the show anyway) that the symbols on every gate are the same (apart from the origin symbol), this means 2 things. 1 when they get to the planet in the movie they just needed to dial the address from the cover stones and the 7th symbol was whichever one wasn't on the earth gate. The 2nd thing this means is that the earth was the origin point for the entire gate system, due to the constellations being ones viewed from earth.
@archer49d Actually, the series fixed the location of the Stargate from the fictional Creek Mtn to Cheyenne Mtn. Also, the Ancients are essentially humans, and originally from Earth, so why wouldn't they make it so that the Gate System is as easy to use as possible? They then carried that on to whatever galaxy they visited, pick one planet to base that galaxy's gate system on, and pick the right constellations. Simple, yet highly effective.
Another thing that bugs me about this part of the movie is that the old lady claims that getting the 6th chevron locked in is "as far as they have been able to get."
BUT...if that's the case, why not just try every symbol on the gate to see if it works as the 7th? I mean, if you know the first 6 symbols, it would only have taken them a short amount of time to try each symbol on the gate, until they came across the point of origin for earth symbol.
nono ok if they get a wrong code the 7th is always and i mean ALWAYS the earth symbol so get wrong code and earth symbol at end and th 7th chevron wont lock get a right code and earth symbol and it will lock the cords and you will have an cords adress
1) they had no idea what this device is or what it does (they didn't even know it was called a 'Stargate' until Jackson corrected their translation)....yet they have all this equipment set up for tracking a probe through space.
2) The movie states that the probe is in another galaxy, yet in the series they specifically say that Abydos (where the probe went in this movie) is one of the closest planets (with a stargate) to Earth...and certainly in the same galaxy.
1) Well they don't know what it is or what it does, but it is a big circle... like a doorway, so one of the things they could be prepared for is having to go "through" that doorway, I'd be able to figure it out from looking at it.
2) And O'neil is O'neill, just accept the canon of the movie as being true canon and the canon of the series as being "fan-fiction" I can accept them getting things wrong, the guys who made the had nothing to do with the series. It's like non-Lucas Star Wars or Jones.
Also, regarding point one... Creek Mountain, CO is fictitious, could be a deep space tracking facility, etc etc which already had said tracking equipment in place.
i love this movie, but what is totally dumb is that probe...I mean its man made but has the power to send back a signal from millions of light years away? I think not...
They both sound alike and look alike, especially when shanks first took over as daniel jackson in SG1. I always hoped they woulda made a parallel universe episode with the original cast of the movie and stargate sg1 meeting up,
well, the equipment they had in the movie was very old, so the discrepancies could be accounted for as mistakes. This was new technology to them at the time, so they calculated wrong the whole khaliem galaxy thing.
Excellente série de SF, malgré de nombreuses invraisemblances, bien sûr, mais c'est juste pour se distraire... La vérité est ailleurs... comme chacun sait.
hm, it's been a long time since I've seen this movie, especially when you toss in cramming all of SG1 in recently
but I totally agree w/ one of my friends that although Kurt Russel is drastically different (at least in looks) from RDA, James Spader totally digivolves into Michael Shanks....
Being an old buddy of Erich Von Daniken i wouldn't say this film was all that innovative but it WAS a lot of fun to watch & James Spader's still the one 'n' only Daniel Jackson!
well the aliens that are not humans speaking english makes sense.. they studied us and are far more advanced. However the other cultures speaking english.. i think that the tv show just did not have time to have daniel jackson interpret them haha
@AnonVonZilch Yes well, in the Movie, Abydos is on the other side of the Universe. Which is inconsistent with the show. I prefer the series to the Movie. .
Actually, Abydos being in the same galaxy as Earth is inconsistent with the movie =P. Personally, I prefer the movie. Gate travel in the series is just too commonplace. The series is good, but the excitement and wonder of traveling to other worlds is something I really miss.
@AnonVonZilch But then you would need more than six symbols. Because along the axis of the seventh symbol it could be in any galaxy so it dosn't make that much sense. The 8th symbol for a different galaxy makes a lot more sense to reach another galaxy. Alos, the Goau'ld are extremely different in the movie.
You can say whatever about movies that win the Oscar. Far as I'm concerned, these 10 minutes are among the most powerful and fascinating in any movie. The great adventure. And not only, but wrapped in a fantastical sci-fi premise, about the possible alien nature of our science and tech.
Jeez, even I recognized those signs as constellations the first time I saw this movie. Who doesn't remember Orion's familiar shape from when they were kids?
Even people familiar with hieroglyphs, and other writing like hieratic, demotic and cuneiform know those symbols don't look like anything like the standard alphabets.
Don't blame me if James Spader is a large celebrity, and Michael Shanks is a minor figure that is only popular within the Gater community who OWES any fame he has to Spaderhimself.
yeah, ole chubs is Large in the sense of size, compared to the ever so fit Michael Shanks, as far as his carrer goes, it was lackluster, at best. the TV show and all its people was way better than that of the movie.

wow. Somewhere in the Kalium galaxy. On the other side of the known universe. SG1 said it was in this galaxy and relatively close.
They dealt with the shaking, something to do with buffers.

And they upgraded the screens from those bulbous CRT dinosaurs.
