I have always found the smells of many perfumes to be nauseating. The same applies to some sweets eg butter balls.
The furry texture of peach skin has always made me feel as if I'm shivering very uncomfortably with goose pimples when biting into a peach. I prefer nectarines - same taste without the texture issue.
The sound of cutlery screeching on a plate makes me throw up and i dont know what to do - it is driving me insane. please any suggestions on ways to get rid of this because it is driving me crazy!!!!!!!
I have AS. I cringe when people sing off key...like an involuntary spasm that must seem awfully rude to the vocalist. I really can't help It. I think We have finer tuned senses in general and that sensitivity can easily lead to sensory overload. But isn't It wonderful when you get to wrap yourself in Good noises? Love acoustic guitar, cats purring, the soft rythmic breathing of a sleeping baby...
I remember this one time on a Metro where the PA system would not stop beeping. Constant "beep...beep...beep" right over my head, once per second, for an entire hour. I felt like I was going insane.
I have Asperger syndrome ! I know now i need train my rational brain for made ideas i have big fantasy but i find way i need train rational brain for my ideas made real!
Cotton wadding, velvet, board dusters, touching something when i've cut off too much of my fingernails, a train's brakes, crying babies, accelerating motorcycles,... makes me cringe
Stupid car alarms - people consistently blow car horns and loud motorcycles should are so disruptive.
I have learned to "deal" with low volume noise, but WHY do people have to suddenly, out of the blue blow their car horn? And motorcycle traveling fast so the noise rapidly increases.
Most states have laws making both illegal, but it doesn't change the way people carelessly act.
Finally someone who understand the feeling and texture of stuff on the hands and mouth. I hate the feel of raw meat, I cannot prepare raw meat cause i cant stand the way it feels. I also cant have lumpy mash potato... cant mix foods together on my plate have to have them all seperate. hate beaping sounds especiously if continuous...
What about buzzing/humming sounds when it's right by your ear? I hate when I am getting my hair cut, and they take out the electric clippers. uggghhh my body twitches just thinking about it!!!
Styrofoam is the worst, dry hands after washing, feel of pencil on paper, dry air around newspapers, tags on shirts, being in crowds at concerts....none of it I can barley take....some have become easier as Ive gotten older though...but still oversensitivity to certain things is a big prob for me.
Once during a Digital media class We were learning about how to make sound files. The teacher demonstrated sound frequencies that are dangerous to humans by asking us to plug headphones into the computer, told us not wear them and raise the volume all the way so we can hear bits of it. After the sound played I started to feel dizzy. I told the teacher that the sound made me dizzy and explained that I has Aspergers, my senses are fragile and the removed headphones didn't protect me from the sound
I've got that - anyone else don't like Woodpigeon noise? Or have that thing where you're teeth touch the wood of a lollypop? *cringing as I write* it really puts me on edge. Or really bad fake leather? I used to work in a charity shop and I could not touch jacket.
i can't stand touching paper, and i hate the sound of pencil lead scraping against it. i love petting cats cuz der so fluffy :) some metals are disturbing to touch and bright light hurts my eyes. on the flip side, i have an abnormal pain tolerance. i've been torn up pretty bad before, and i didn't even react, yet paper brushing against my skin makes me shiver and spazz out.
zomg! I have the same problem with sticky stuff! Like scotch tape and band aids...I hate them and when people leave tape or band aids on the table I freak. I also can't stand the sound of cars and other motor driven machines, I swear I could pummel those douch bags that make their motor bikes loud!
I have Aspergers and the things that bother me are; the feeling that my hands are dirty (i have to wash them and enjoy also watching the dirt run down the sink), the sound of people chewing food, the feeling of someone touching my face, the sound of someone raising their voice, the feeling of someone tapping me, and that's all I can think of right now.
The thing about dirt is quite true...I say that as someone also diagnosed with OCD. As far as noise...I hate the sound of basketball (both the noise of it hitting the pavement over and over and the loud screaming of the kids playing it). Especially in this neighbourhood where that happens in the middle of the night. My family seems to sleep through it more easily, anyway...
i have sensory issues in my hands sometimes. i have problems with touching metal sometimes especially with cold hands. there's other times my body feels more sensitive than others. i usually like to stay in what i wear to bed, because clothes are another thing with me. i don't like wearing jeans with the zipper in front. those drive me insane if they're too small especially. sounds can bother me too, but usually my sensory issues involve touch. i can't stand the feeling of dry hands or rough.
yea i have aspergus and yea stop the high frequency beeping in the background for god sakes and yes i hate stickiness and woolen clothes but regular wool is fine as i work in a shearing shed
Not sure if I have aspergers but I get low-latent inhibition really badly at times and end up with all the symptoms of tourettes. I either enjoy touching so much I want to touch everything or even the clothes I'm wearing drive me insane. Volume is the same.

Restaurants! To me, a busy restaurant is the epitome of sensory overload. Everyone is talking, (I can't help trying to process everyone's conversation at once) everyone is making noise with their cutlery, loud music is playing, everyone is moving. Servers are moving, talking. I can hear every noise in the kitchen, smell every smell. All the ceiling fans are chopping up the light into a strobe effect and moving the air. There is a constant fluctuation in just about every aspect of every sense.
I think the hand-washing thing would be considered OCD wouldn't it? It is for me anyway. I'm very neuro-atypical. I have Asperger's, Tourette's, OCD, ADD, and now that I think of it I do tend to experience sensory overload. My mind is messed up. Not in a bad way. I mean I wouldn't give up any of these disorders even if there was a cure. They just make me "me." Ever since I watched LotsOfCurls's Tourette's videos, I've been more accepting of my diseases and I now enjoy them.
This is like listening to my self. I hate touching rails in buses, not cause of germs but cause they are so smooth, and often greasy, it's like the metal of them is soft, gahh, it feels like my fingers are sinking into them. I also have problem with one colleague at work who never seems to shut up. Early in the morning, before enablers get in, he coughs like a sick horse, or whistles, I use simplynoise website to cover him up.
When I am surrounded by a lot of things going on, I don't know what to do. I either need to escape and collect my thoughts, or I sort of zone out to a safe place in my mind.
I used to act out, so I wouldn't notice all the craziness surrounding me, but I learned to just vocalize that I'm uncomfortable and cope with sensory overloads more appropriately. Most of the time people don't even realize that I'm freaking out on the inside because I cope so well.
I'm a 32 yr old female and I think I had/have AS. Re the sensory overload, I can't stand crowds, get physically sick from sensory overload (usually fairgrounds etc), I now wear earplugs a lot of the time. Can't stand wool, it's disgusting thinking of it prickling skin, agh! OCD about hand washing. Sensory overload makes it so hard to communicate and even just walk, but I think I've learnt techniques where I break up the walking, talking, listening into manageable segments. Does that make sense?
Also, if these things you describe are 'symptoms' of Asperger's, then I must have it, which is not a total surprise as I knew I displayed some characteristics of OCD.
None of this bothers me in the least however, I've never found it to a problem and the modern obsession with these so called 'mental illnesses' are blown way out proportion.
I am the mother of a child who is "autistic-like" (he has yet to be diagnosed). He will be three in April. I think people should be more understanding because we all have some of these quirks. For instance, I absolutely cannot stand it when someone sits near me in a quiet room and starts to eat......it makes me squirm, it's so gross! Mikey is not yet verbal, but I know he does not like the texture of pudding, yogurt, or ice cream. We are still experimenting with the rest.

I have asperger's syndrome and I know chewing on meat especially overcooked red meat is awful my parents had to force feed me meat to get me to eat it. I live in a group home with four people and my one house mate's voice is loud and nasely . Just hearing his voice ticks me off. People say I should just use ear plugs but I say is it would be nice if people had a better understanding of asperger's syndrome.
I don't have the condition, but I find it really annoying when someone's a singer and they have a really shrill voice, especially when they sing high notes. It really pisses me off.
The absolute most important thing to remember about any sensory over-load is to keep in mind that the problem is internal, not external. Take it from a fellow Aspie, whenever I get the insaciable urge to do or fix something I focus as much as I can on the fact that whatever needs "fixing" is internal, not external, and that the only way to actually fix it is within me.
saliva, the drug-thing, is said to do the same thing. You merge with reality. I'm not autistic, but they seem to have somethign else going on where they can't sort reality. They don't have a flow.
some people seem to have an anxiety disorder that is different. THey're just emotionally reacting to things. When I say that the table and trashcan are part of me, I mean it. It doesn't mean anything to my emotions.
it's when the world goes through you, and you can't tell the difference between a table and a trashcan because they're both inside of you like breathing. It happens to me sometimes. I think ancient people would have though that it was a curse.
I can't scratch or even touch those gift cards, or any plastic card that has the fine ridged surface... so when you tilt the card to another angle, it shows a different image.
It freaks me out. Seriously. I also have the thing about chewing meat.
Well sweety, I hope over the last two years you have discovered the 'miracle of meds' ... the fact is that if you are feeling like crap then it is your Jesus-given right to make yourself feel better ... such pills can be bought online easily if your doctor is an arsehole who won't write you a script. As I like to say, 'For every ill, there is a pill' ... and if anybody stands in your way, the best thing to do is force them away and make sure they never come back.
The noise on buses makes me panic to the point where I just have to get off and walk. I can't stand touching anything with a rough texture. I have problems with food that has the texture of jelly or porridge and I can't eat anything that's really cold or hot. I also can't stand the noises of people eating, it makes me so uncomfortable and worked up. The list goes on... I hate it how these things affect me
Honestly I'm still discerning whether I have it or not, leaning towards yes. Toenail clippers have always made my tongue get the same stiffness as it would eating something sour. I cant stand tight or itchy cloths around my neck or anything touching my neck when I'm sleeping. If too many things are occurring at once, loud noises, a panicking thought, + some kind of commotion as well as odd light situations all combined together, I have an internal nervous breakdown from sensory overload
i find noise and light a real basterd like people yaking on a bus and mobile phones i pods all at the same time and screeming kids i just go into a shut down an stare then i get a funny look..jeff..aspie
This is an example of why I can't stand going to clubs or bars and hearing the blasting music, lights, and shoulder to shoulder crowds and then trying to talk to a potential friend over the music and everyone else, it irritates me. I hate how so many people like to meet up in these kinds of places!
I can relate to this. For me the sound is whistling, I absolutely hate it, it makes me want to scream and hit a person when they whistle. My husband thinks I'm a bit strange and overreact to the sound of whistling, but it really drives me crazy.
I also hate the feeling of makeup on my hands after I put makeup on.
Texture - I hate anything around my neck, can't wear turtle neck clothes - feels awful!

moisture on hands, I agree completely. Sometimes, for no reason, a strange, twitchy feeling and an intense anxiety tied to tactile input or lack thereof. A solution is often just a few deep breaths, or little hand flapping, or rubbing hands over a coarse fabric to get more sensory input. It really can be pretty quick and over with in no time.
I am VERY sensitive to sounds, but I never thought it was a problem until I realized I had AS. People scraping silverware on plates or metal against metal makes my skin absolutely crawl and makes me physically shutter or jolt. I have more of a problem with information overload, though with respect to questions, demands, etc. I avoid foods for certain textures, including mushrooms, cottage cheese, ANY seafood, and cooked veggies like tomatoes, carrots, celery, etc. It's squishy. I hate it!
Metallic sounds such as bells and wind chimes do it to me and sometimes I get that feeling when in a moving vehicle though I'm not sure what it is because sometimes I don't feel it.
Velvet. That stuff is horrible to touch. Baking tins are also aweful to feel. Chalk, dust, i even end up having to wet my hands because I hate the dry feeling of dust.
Polystyrene rubbing together freaks me out too!! I can't even touch it. It's just gross. I can't stand silk or satin against my skin either and I used to really hate wool, but I've found some softer wool that I like okay, which is good because it gets cold and damp where I live. I have recently been relegated to public transport though and the sounds and smells are going to get me arrested any minute now. It's awful and I can't stand it. Especially the little kids popping balloons. Sheesh!
I am extremely grateful for your videos. I, too, get sensory overload problems, especially when in crowded, noisy areas or if too many people are trying to speak to me at once...
i dont hate loud noises as such, but i hate particular noises, like people making tapping noises, people talking loudly or lots of people talking around me at once, and the worst one of all MOUTH NOISES, which can range from someone coughing, to chewing, teeth grinding, sucking noises, slirping. if i am subjected to any of that i have to leave the room before my feeling of sickness and rage get beyond control
For me, water dripping off of my face and nose can drive me crazy, which is a pain when my mom perms my hair. And I also hate the feel of dirt on my hands. Smells of chemicals like cleaning fuid can almost make me vomit. For noises, classrooms can make me have an emotional breakdown. Near the end of the school year, I even had to be taken out of my English classroom because I started crying and insulting students, along with throwing my pencil bag.
I am a 52 year old guy, who was diagnosed with the condition of asperger's just a few years ago. I have a high I.Q. and am considered to be a high-functioning aspee! I have extreme anxiety and turned to drugs and drinking mostly for self-medication etc. This has lead me to bouts with the criminal justice system here in the U.S. Be thankful you were diagnosed at an early age and live in a slightly more civilized country than the U.S. I'm guessing you're Australian.
@theworldsgreatest111 well its no better in the uk they think i am an aspie but what the hell i did the tests myself 6 times came out aspie 6 times, went to 3 special schools but i am a tech into ham radio and computors so i know what you are going through....jeff...the uk they treat disabled people like shit over here and call us all lazy scroungers,,basterds,,,
@theworldsgreatest111 I am terribly sorry for you. I am a non-alcoholic, not because I think alcohol and drugs that effect the brain are sinful or evi, but because I do not like the taste of most alcohol, and loath the smell of cigarettes and tobacco. . .
hairs tickling me or water dripping on the back of my neck. my mother's voice more than half the time. bugs crawling on me or the sensation of it. the sound of a squeaky lisp, ya know when it's like almost whistling. i dont like anything slimy or snake/lizard-like.tags on clothes. if my arm touches someone else' and they have prickly hairs. someone's teeth on a metal fork. plates clingy together. metal scrapping just about anything hard. teeth grinding. there are others but im over listing them.
@420kdougs Yes exactly! That noise when people lisp gets to me also! Sometimes I even get a huge shudder down the side of my body that has my sensitive ear. (only one of my ears is super sensitive)
i don't like complete silence, crickets, screeching especially with doors, i can't eat seafood because of the texture and i used to have problems with bananas but it's fine now as long as i eat it a certain way. i cant drink water too cold or milk if i didn't just poor it. when it's cloudy outside and the sky is white, that's the worst for me. it's almost immobilizing. i HATE the smell of peanut butter. i can't handle nausea. when people whisper while i read or write.
Also when I'm watching t.v. or playing a video game someone will turn on music, turn on another t.v. that is louder or similar volume, someone talking on the phone all at the same time, it all comes in at once and I can't nearly stand it. It almost makes me want to yell at the top of my lungs.
Usually I am overwhelmed when I receive too much information at once from someone or from multiple people. I become confused and easily frustrated, resulting in a complete shut down. Other overloads include sometimes when I am by myself and I want to do something, like cooking. I have to actually think about what I have to do and sometimes forget something simple like getting out bread for a sandwich. As for other overloads, my entire five senses tend to be affected. Mostly my ears though.
i feel like i can sense anger in some peeople. like if i see someone who is crying out of sadness i would just avoid them because i feel like im going to get yelled at if i try comforting them, like this onetime my sister was crying becuase of her band teacher that was awsome left to another city and the band class was falling apart. so i decided to comfort her and then she yelled at me for annoying her while she was trying to pray. i yelled back at her that she should pray in secret.
my son has AS. I completely understand what you are talking about. food textures are a big deal. he paces A LOT in the house. he also hates the way certain material feels. he is sensitive to sound and light. it's like he sees light we don't see and hears loudness that we don't hear. thank you so much for posting this video.
I wrote earlier today, before I read all of the responses I still have not finished). I see that women are not usually diagnosed until later in life because it is rare in females. I am not an expert, but I am a 57 year old male who was just diagnosed. I have spent 3/4 of my life not knowing what was wrong but knowing something was, and most of the symptoms of AS have manifested themselves in my life and who I became. I am still working through this 'awakening.' Its hard to look ahead.
@gtysz Hi there, I'm an Aspie woman who was diagnosed later in life. I don't believe it is rare in females; rather, it is expressed differently and therefore underdiagnosed. If you do a Google search for the Autism Women's Network, you'll find a lot more information on that topic.
By the way, I don't think there's anything "wrong" with me, nor anyone else on the spectrum. We're simply wired differently. That difference may be disabling, but it's only a difference..not "wrong".
I have AS. I can relate. I cannot eat fried eggs-they make me gag. That slimy texture. Anything dry against my skin like painted surfaces make me shudder. I can't stand anything touching my feet, intentionally but more when accidental. I can't stand lawnmowers, hammering, jackhammers. Light that others see fine is too bright sometimes for me to look at. I see visual noise, and color where there is none.
I have AS, and I'm very sensitive to loud noises. The noises that bother me the most are dogs barking, the noise of the sink garbage disposal, and a hair dryer. I'm also very sensitive to the feel of lotion and wooden popscicle sticks. I hate mayo with a passion.
I agree, She is a cutie. Where are you from AspergersGirl? LOL! You should see me when people have their Car Bass on. I go crazy. I hate the feel of Paint on my hands and I love to paint. This makes so much sense. Thanks for the video!
i cant stand echos and avoid going into town i cant go clubbing or do "normal" things for my age like that, i often melt down or as i say freak out i used to have very violent episodes but id not feel conscios and i wouldnt be able to remember what happened after im not as bad now i usually just get on the floor and cover my ears and eyes untill i have calmed down enough to get away or stop what ever it is upsetting me.
im the same but id like to add that once iv touched something that feels horrible i can shudder on and off for upto two hours after even after washing my hands several times and knowing its gone, sometimes its even hard to eat like i have a sauce phobia because it feels so horrible i cant have it anywhere near me and the only thing that soothes my skin in running my hands under warm water.
that's kinda strange. noises that usually bother others (ie: chalkboard screeching, crying babies, etc) don't bother me. I do have aspergers, but sensations don't really bother me at all. is it normal to be super sensitive to different senses? Because I'm pretty neutral.
Wow, I really love your voice and how animated you are with explaining things. I can't believe you were 13 when diagnosed. Why so late? I have a 7 year old son who has high functioning autism. He was diagnosed when he was 3. I live in the UK, and he lives in the US with his mom, and I haven't seen him since he was 2 :( I only get to see him through you tube videos, and that's how I came across you.
@xxoxia We girls are usually not diagnosed until later in life because autism is rarer in females. They say the odds are 1 in 150, but only 1 out of 12 of those cases is a girl. Just thought you should know.
i am not autistic nor aspergers but even us neurotypicals can have issues
i dont like the feel of woollens.food on my hands esp gritty foods or slimy foods.i cant stand loud noises.i hate people eating because i can hear them doing so and it sounds disgusting,i cant stand balloons either mainly because of the noise they make when they pop.
how ever i love the smell of plastic.petrol.freshly cut grass and i love the feel of velvert
@kazza224 OMG I HATE POPPING BALLONS....it scares the SHIT out of me, i feel like my eardrums are about to explode!! and I don't like people being too close even my b/f of 3 years...
arrrrrrgggggggggggg hve same problem. ANYBODY HELP? i hate noises, i end up in mental institution 4 times because of extrasensitive hearing. im just hopeless, dont know why i ever gave this up..
I'm particularly sensitive to clothing on my chest and waist and try to ensure it stays away from my skin. Usually this results in my shirt/jacket pushed near my neck or shoulder region. Or pants near my stomach region, but not in public.
I can't stand a lot of light. I wear sunglasses all the time, and I keep the light off in my room unless I need to look for something, or clean. I also cannot concentrate on something when someone is talking to me. I'm sure that's not limited to AS. When I was a child I went berserk to the sound of vacuums, hair dryers, and sirens. That doesn't bother me anymore. I also hate sweaters. They are the most uncomfortable piece of clothing ever made.
I keep sound silencer ear muffs available around the house. I have two sets of comfortable ear plugs out in my car.
I wore sunglasses for the brightness of the computer monitor, but then I found I could adjust most of the blue out. I still have to "select" blocks of text so it is white letters on a dark background.
I think the problem is often seeing your surroundings as a complete chaos. For an aspie it takes a lot of puzzling to see this as one situation.
All this puzzling often gives me a sensory overload, but also a very clear view of the situation. This puzzling also works in social situations. Lack of social skills when your an aspie is just nonsense. It just works different.
My compliments on your explanation! I hope people will understand us someday.
I get sensory overload quite easily. It's rather unpleasant, to say the least. Thankfully, the only thing I have a major problem with is sounds. Textures do bother me a little, but it's not nearly as bad as sounds.
I'm an apsie and I think the only thing that I have problems with, sensory wise, would be light. other than that I can handle my surroundings. By the way you are are very beautiful (you probably get that a lot), and its nice to see another aspie on youtube.
my bf's an aspie and he can't STAND the feeling of that ultra soft, microplush that they make socks and stuffed animals out of.
I'm not one, but I relate completely. I have REALLY sensitive hearing. Babies crying gives me migraines and sends me absolutely ballistic. I want to claw my skin at the sound.
I don't have aspergers but I know exactly what you're talking about in this video - I feel exactly the same way. I actually despise noise. I am always telling people to do things in quieter, more gentle ways so as not to cause a disturbance in the auditory spectrum. This is one of the many reasons why I can't stand the thought of going to a party or club - lights, noise, people... not fun.
If some men fancy this lady why do they not post private messages to her, instead of leaving messages on here for all to read, please. I think that it is inappropriate to the discussion here.
Hey roid rage take a chill pill. This is a video post to help HFA individuals. If all you have is negativity maybe you should take it elsewhere, I believe I speak for all mature parties involved when I say your opinion will be ignored.
seriously, attention-seeking hypocondriac blonde sluts need to drink methanol and end their fucking whiney lives. LMAO! seriously, shut the fuck up. lol.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i'm surprised. i keep dirt on my hands all day. in fact, i like to touch other people and their clothes with my snot that i leave dried on my hands. i'm utterly SHOCKED that you wouldn't just LOVE the feeling of dirt on your hands. hahaha.
now FUCK OFF, bitch. you're a hypochondriac. you don't have assburgers. you're just a WHINEY COW. you have WHINEY COW SYNDROME. fuck off. get off the interwebs, cow. moo cow moo.
Well from a very young age i had to see a specialist as i was not doing my work in class at school and would just day dream out the window, and i would have very what i would call "strange" obsessions and interests, i.e. i would sit and draw electricity pilons, collect padlocks and keys, and would go mad if a train was to go past the house, i would run out just to see it go past, i have a speach impediment (stutter) and i blink my eyes alot, i thought it was just bad nervs
I have certain sensory issues these can include sounds for example I hate the screeching sound of smoke alarms, car alarms etc. I do not like being shouted at I really hate mash potatoes the thought of them makes me heave. I do not mind being touched if the person doing it is giving affection. I like wearing fluffy jumpers.
I cannot bear stuff on my hands, i have to wash them straight away. Loading a dishwasher and getting a bit of food on my hands makes me cringe. I also hate woolen clothes or seams brushing me. The sounds of alarms or phones drives me crazy. I hate to be tickled or touched unexpectedly it is more painfull and unpleasnt than being hit, pinched or slapped. Light is bad in supermarkets so i normally wear sunglasses if i go.
I am the same way with getting dirt off my hands. Also my big issue with meat is the chunks of skin, fat, bone, or grissle. If I bite into something in food I do not like, I can not eat it. It is so off-putting that the food is now disgusting. Another great example is biting into an egg shell, or a crab shell in something made with these contents. Food texture is a huge issue for me. Clothing causes irritation of my skin, tags, stitching, thus I generally wear cotton and tagless when available.
whenever Im seasoning meat, or working with anything mushy, I feel the overwhelming urge to quickly clean my hands. As for sounds though---I happen to be partially deaf and alot of sounds and noises don't disturb me.
My mother is obviously an Aspie too! There's no doubt where I've inherited mine from. I wish she could show more understanding to my being so emotionally sensitive. She's never been able to show such to me and can only scream at me in the most hideous manner possible. Viciously accusing me of being a selfish and abusive monster. Whenever I talk back, defend myself, or do anything other than agree with her.
sensory overload i know it to well, smells get me the worse i hate the smell of cirgetts after i have gone to my neigbours i smell like cigs i hate it. i have to change and wash the clothes.when i was a kid i use to smell my hands alot and i hated the smell of them i have no idea why, i use to wash my hands all the time but they still smelled i had to learn not to smell my hands untill i forgot about it
i like your vids...im still not getting the aspie thing tho...the symptoms of this sensory overload, for example, just seem like pretty common things that annoy people. the human condition
@AspergersGirl from another Aspie, it 's like the sound (say styrofoam chunks rubbing together) is amplified a bunch to an intolerable squeal. there's also the weird habits and interests, inability to interact in some ways, basically missing most of the social stuff that normal people have.
Erm, well imagine a really unpleasant sound, like a loud high pitched siren, that's blasting really loudly right next to your ear. Now imagine that sound is so loud that it makes your nerves twitch in a painful manner. Now imagine everyone around you can't hear the sound as loudly as you can and so your feel like a crazy person when they tell you 'it's not that bad', but to you, it's horrible. And it's just random sounds, not ALL squeaky or loud sounds, just certain ones. Hope that helps! =0)
@JOEYGOLDCOMEDY You just feel things 10 times more than most people do. For example I have an excellent sense of smell. I can smell a chewing gum on the steps like 10 steps away, I am serious. And it's disgusting.
Also even if a sweater has only like 1% wool, it feels to me the same as 100%. It suffocates me.
So you could say we're more sensitive to things, and the important thing to know is that we're never exaggerating.
Yes i have the symptoms! but i smoke a lots of weed and thats helps to enjoy life with less friends.the future is unsure maybe i need a good girlfriend but its hard to act and do normal (going out,do dinner .. boring stuff that girls want) I'm only intrested in very smart ppl ... ?? is this normal?? thanks
I've been a vegetarian for over 20 years, because of my concern for how animals are treated on factory farms. I highly recomment a vegetarian diet, as it has many health benefits, as well as being kind to animals and the environment. I've even heard that it helps to reduce some of the symptoms of autism.
i cant stand loud high pitched tones or very loud low tones like planes or telephones, cellphones or ipods, clothing labels, bright coloursor extreme contrast. i also hate perfumes. i also have aspergers but not formally diagnosed.
There is an annoying electric ticking can be heard in the background of your video that hurts my aspie ears. ;)
Anyway - I still don't get what is sensory overload. Despite that I'm an aspie, I've never had one - or possible I had, but I lived it as natural. Or is it so memorable? One gets really sick of it?
I know that I'm an aspie for a month, so I'm still learning about some aspects of Aspergers.
With me, it's certain buzzing frequencies, like motorcycles, weedeaters, wasps, bees, flies buzzing, or when certain male speaking voices are talking. Ane time a cow mooed and that made me shudder. It makes me flinch and grimace. Oh, and an airplane one time.

There is a constant fluctuation in just about every aspect of every sense.
brainburrito 9 months ago
I think the hand-washing thing would be considered OCD wouldn't it? It is for me anyway. I'm very neuro-atypical. I have Asperger's, Tourette's, OCD, ADD, and now that I think of it I do tend to experience sensory overload. My mind is messed up. Not in a bad way. I mean I wouldn't give up any of these disorders even if there was a cure. They just make me "me." Ever since I watched LotsOfCurls's Tourette's videos, I've been more accepting of my diseases and I now enjoy them.

Are you GP user Sweetheart?
Also, if these things you describe are 'symptoms' of Asperger's, then I must have it, which is not a total surprise as I knew I displayed some characteristics of OCD.
None of this bothers me in the least however, I've never found it to a problem and the modern obsession with these so called 'mental illnesses' are blown way out proportion.

I have asperger's syndrome and I know chewing on meat especially overcooked red meat is awful my parents had to force feed me meat to get me to eat it.

If too many things are occurring at once, loud noises, a panicking thought, + some kind of commotion as well as odd light situations all combined together, I have an internal nervous breakdown from sensory overload

moisture on hands, I agree completely.

Clapping is one of my biggest sensory irritants.
Also when I'm watching t.v. or playing a video game someone will turn on music, turn on another t.v. that is louder or similar volume, someone talking on the phone all at the same time, it all comes in at once and I can't nearly stand it. It almost makes me want to yell at the top of my lungs.
BL00F0X 1 year ago
Usually I am overwhelmed when I receive too much information at once from someone or from multiple people. I become confused and easily frustrated, resulting in a complete shut down. Other overloads include sometimes when I am by myself and I want to do something, like cooking. I have to actually think about what I have to do and sometimes forget something simple like getting out bread for a sandwich. As for other overloads, my entire five senses tend to be affected. Mostly my ears though.

I am still working through this 'awakening.' Its hard to look ahead.
gtysz 1 year ago

I see visual noise, and color where there is none.

that's kinda strange. noises that usually bother others (ie: chalkboard screeching, crying babies, etc) don't bother me. I do have aspergers, but sensations don't really bother me at all. is it normal to be super sensitive to different senses? Because I'm pretty neutral.

My nephew has Autism, and it bothers him when water is anything but clear. Like in lakes when it looks brown at the edges.

I want to claw my skin at the sound.
jm2trash 2 years ago
I don't have aspergers but I know exactly what you're talking about in this video - I feel exactly the same way. I actually despise noise. I am always telling people to do things in quieter, more gentle ways so as not to cause a disturbance in the auditory spectrum. This is one of the many reasons why I can't stand the thought of going to a party or club - lights, noise, people... not fun.

If some men fancy this lady why do they not post private messages to her, instead of leaving messages on here for all to read, please. I think that it is inappropriate to the discussion here.

The following hurt ears:
leaf blowers, buses, motorcycles, yelling fans at a sports event... even on TV., loud chaotic music, baby crying, air conditioner or heater humm
Hurts skin:
tight socks, tight clothes, shoes, tags, wool, synthetic fabrics,
Hurts eyes:
bright lights, florescent lights, sun, headlights on cars, Mall lighting, anything bright, I guess

I like wearing fluffy jumpers.
philsaspiezone 2 years ago
I cannot bear stuff on my hands, i have to wash them straight away. Loading a dishwasher and getting a bit of food on my hands makes me cringe. I also hate woolen clothes or seams brushing me. The sounds of alarms or phones drives me crazy. I hate to be tickled or touched unexpectedly it is more painfull and unpleasnt than being hit, pinched or slapped. Light is bad in supermarkets so i normally wear sunglasses if i go.
TheJuno20 2 years ago
Also did you know there is a very unpleasant sound in the background of your video? It not easy to listen to this video with headphones.
RaiseYourMind 2 years ago
I am the same way with getting dirt off my hands. Also my big issue with meat is the chunks of skin, fat, bone, or grissle. If I bite into something in food I do not like, I can not eat it. It is so off-putting that the food is now disgusting. Another great example is biting into an egg shell, or a crab shell in something made with these contents. Food texture is a huge issue for me. Clothing causes irritation of my skin, tags, stitching, thus I generally wear cotton and tagless when available.

JOEYGOLDCOMEDY 2 years ago
I can't really answer this as I'm not two people and can't describe how it feels to normal people.
AspergersGirl 2 years ago
@AspergersGirl from another Aspie, it 's like the sound (say styrofoam chunks rubbing together) is amplified a bunch to an intolerable squeal. there's also the weird habits and interests, inability to interact in some ways, basically missing most of the social stuff that normal people have.
HappyDiscoDeath 1 year ago
Erm, well imagine a really unpleasant sound, like a loud high pitched siren, that's blasting really loudly right next to your ear. Now imagine that sound is so loud that it makes your nerves twitch in a painful manner. Now imagine everyone around you can't hear the sound as loudly as you can and so your feel like a crazy person when they tell you 'it's not that bad', but to you, it's horrible. And it's just random sounds, not ALL squeaky or loud sounds, just certain ones. Hope that helps! =0)
hippiebutnot 2 years ago
@JOEYGOLDCOMEDY You just feel things 10 times more than most people do. For example I have an excellent sense of smell. I can smell a chewing gum on the steps like 10 steps away, I am serious. And it's disgusting.
Also even if a sweater has only like 1% wool, it feels to me the same as 100%. It suffocates me.
So you could say we're more sensitive to things, and the important thing to know is that we're never exaggerating.
Well, that's the point really.

If you have problems with the texture of meat, have you ever considered switching to a vegetarian diet?
NancyHey 2 years ago
No, because I enjoy eating meat, and like the taste.
The main problem is with cooked chicken which has been chilled. Sometimes it's worse than others.
AspergersGirl 2 years ago
I've been a vegetarian for over 20 years, because of my concern for how animals are treated on factory farms. I highly recomment a vegetarian diet, as it has many health benefits, as well as being kind to animals and the environment. I've even heard that it helps to reduce some of the symptoms of autism.
NancyHey 2 years ago 4
i cant stand loud high pitched tones or very loud low tones like planes or telephones, cellphones or ipods, clothing labels, bright coloursor extreme contrast. i also hate perfumes. i also have aspergers but not formally diagnosed.
Griffin9857 2 years ago
There is an annoying electric ticking can be heard in the background of your video that hurts my aspie ears. ;)
Anyway - I still don't get what is sensory overload. Despite that I'm an aspie, I've never had one - or possible I had, but I lived it as natural. Or is it so memorable? One gets really sick of it?
I know that I'm an aspie for a month, so I'm still learning about some aspects of Aspergers.
GlorytoTheMany 2 years ago
I have Asperger's and for me sensory overload brings on a panic attack , which can then lead to a migraine and irritability.

With me, it's certain buzzing frequencies, like motorcycles, weedeaters, wasps, bees, flies buzzing, or when certain male speaking voices are talking. Ane time a cow mooed and that made me shudder. It makes me flinch and grimace. Oh, and an airplane one time.
