I agree, Doubt was quite difficult to watch, but it was so poignant, and has a very strong after effect. You really have to think deeply about the movie. I don't believe Meryl thinks too much of herself, but I really do think she thinks too much of America.

Mamma Mia and Chicago are complete opposites. I think Catherine deserved the oscar absolutely it was a once in a lifetime performance on her part, Meryl is always brilliant, and she deserved to win the oscar for Doubt, Mamma Mia wasn't something she would have deserved the win for. She was amazing in Doubt and she honestly deserved the oscar win. But Kate was very very good, and I looved that she gave Meryl that respect and comment in her speech, so she made up for winning to me haha.

Who said anything about Chicago? Not me. Just because a movie is a blockbuster does not make it award worthy. Many Meryl films didn't make near as much money but were BETTER movies with a better performance from Meryl. Just because many of us think (including me) that Meryl is the greatest actress of all time we shouldn't reward her for just any movie or performance. If the films and performances aren't going to fairly and impartially why give awards?

Yes, I agree!!!! I was really surprised and shocked that Mamma Mia didn't win at least in the 'Outstanding British Film' categroy!!!

Mamma Mia is the highest grossing british film ever, its the best sold dvd ever, and so on and the movie didnt win at the biggest British award ???!???its really wierd!

What I notice about Bafta is that whenever there is an English Actor/Actress competing against an American one for the same award, the award usually goes to the English one.

I hate to say this but there seems to be an emerging pattern here. Case and point, the same year when Meryl won the Oscar for her stunning performance in Sofie's Choice, Julie Walters won at Bafta.

There are other instances, of course.
