Wow, we're actually talking about a human being who became a gigantic star and didn't lose sight of the fact that he was first and foremost another human being. Right on Brooks Robinson!
Well my friend I am a lifetime Baltimore Orioles fan. I born and grew up in San Juan, Puerto Rico and I never see Brook Robinson in person but every season I see the games thru the TV and follow his performance. He was the best MLB third baseman of all times....
i had the pleasure of playing Little League & Pony League ball against Brooks' son in county league ball in Baltimore. (i just now learned of the passing of Harmon Kilebrew...) I was a catcher & will never forget one such game. I looked down the third base line & out toward left field there was Brooks, lying in the grass with his head propped up in his hand. I have never forgotten that afternoon, a day when the Orioles had a bye and Brooksy watched me play ball & signed a scrap of paper.
when my dad was in the 4th grade he had to write a letter to someone for an assignment, he wrote to his hero (brooks). He told me he didn't expect a reply or anything except maybe a standard reply from the front office but 3 weeks later he received a letter and a 8x10 autographed picture from Brooks. Truly a class act and while i never saw him play in person i always admired him and i always tried to play 3rd base like him. My daughter's middle name is in honor of him.
I've been a Phillies fan all my life, but I always had a sweet spot for Brooks Robinson. Something about an "average joe" personality, with way, way, way greater than average abilities. Baltimore fans would call him on the phone at his home in the off season & he would actually rap with them for a while, as though there was no such thing as a stranger.
Brooks Robinson has been my hero since i was 8 years old. I'm 50 now, and he's still me hero. When the day comes that he passes away, i'll feel like my childhood will finally be over. He's the best to ever take the field. no one will ever come close to him.
I met Brooks Robinson when I was 8 years old on the Metroliner from Baltimore to New York. His wife called me over to sit next to him on the train. He was still playing, and I was In awe of a guy I had seen play many times. There I sat for about 2 hours as he talked baseball and life to a young fan. As I remember it, he would have no hero worship and we just talked. I don't know what happened to the autograph but the memory will last as long as I am around.
Thanks Roy. One of my greatest moments as a former monor league player was meeting my idol Frank Robinson, but the real delight was experienceing the incredibly kind and warm spirited nature of Brooks Robinson. I wish there were more people on this earth like him. Your tribute hear is so loving and so honorable. I'm glad it has been posted here for the world to see a man with a heart for the game.
Yes...baseball would be much better off if there were more Brooks Robinsons. He and the late Elrod Hendricks were my two favorite Orioles. Brooks is class all the way. And Baltimore will always be proud of him.
@BullpenBoss i don't wanna sound cheesy but my High School Coach used to call me Brooks .... I went to a prep school in Maryland for a year, but I'm from Toronto.... honestly i never knew who the fuck he was talking about at the time...lol.... but now i know what a complment it was.
When I was about 7 years old growing up in Detroit, I attended a game between the Orioles and the Tigers, and before the contest started, I remembered Brooks outside the dugout just kind of taking in the surroundings. I walked down to the end of the row and asked him if he could sign my program, and without hesitation, turned around, signed it and gave me the biggest smile. He is without a doubt, a true class individual. I only wish baseball could permanently stay 1970.

We needed more video, fewer stills, and less yapping. Otherwise, a great video.

Earl Weaver had a great line when asked what it takes to win. Without missing a beat, he dead-panned, just get players named Robinson.
